PURPOSE:To heighten the energy density of a battery employing an organic substance as the active material of the anode, by using 5,12-naphthacenedione, 5,11-naphthacenedione, 5,6,11,12-naphthacene-tetrone or their derivative as the active material of the anode. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or an alloy containing said metal is provided as a cathode active material 4. 5,12-naphthacenedione represented by a general formulaI, 5,11-naphthacenedione represented by another general formula II, 5,6,11,12-naphthacenetetrone represented by still another general formula III or their derivative is provided as an anode active material 6. An electrolyte solution or solid electrolyte 5 is provided between the cathode active material 4 and the anode active material 6.
