FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a health supplement composition. In more particular, the present invention relates to a medicinal composition comprising sea cucumber (gamat) and chicory, to be taken orally as general health supplement.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The sea cucumber is an echinoderm of the class Holothuroidea, which is always found on the sea floor. It possesses an elongated body with leathery skin. Generally, 90% of the sea cucumber's tissues including the body walls, muscles, gonads and intestine are edible.
Several species of this animal are often used as the main ingredient in medicinal remedies, which is called gamat in Malay word. Gamat is highly demanded in Malaysia as well as other Asia regions due to the public's belief of its excellent therapeutic value. Gamat usually refers to the dried, powdered bodies of sea cucumbers made into various types of nutritious food or cosmetic products, such as supplement, tea, lotion, salve, facial mask and others. The main beneficial effect of sea cucumber is the property to heal cuts, skin eruptions and ulcers. Apart from their antibacterial and antifungal properties, sea cucumbers are also believed to be endowed with aphrodisiac powers.
The increase of the market demand for sea cucumber relates directly to the progression of pharmaceutical industries. Its high contents of polysaccharide sulphate, glycoprotein, fucans and lectins are suitable for the development of therapeutic drugs for arthritis, cancer or HIV treatments.
