技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、電気二重層キャパシタ用非水系電解液および電気二重層キャパシタに 関する。
背景技術
[0002] 電気二重層キャパシタの形状としては、集電体上に形成した活性炭を主体とする一 対の分極性電極の間にセパレータを挟んだ素子を、電解液とともに金属ケース中に 収納し、ガスケットを介して金属蓋によって密封したコイン型、一対のシート状分極性 電極の間にセパレータを介して巻回してなる素子を電解液とともに円筒型の金属ケ ース中に収容し、ケースの開口部から電解液が蒸発しないように封口した円筒型等 が知られている。
[0003] また、大電流大容量向けとして、多数のシート状分極性電極を、間にセパレータを 介して積層してなる素子が組み込まれた積層型の電気二重層キャパシタも知られて いる(特許文献;!〜 3参照。)。この積層型の電気二重層キャパシタにおいては、矩形 に成形されたシート状分極性電極を正極および負極とし、間にセパレータを介して交 互に積層して素子とし、正極および負極それぞれの端部に正極リード部材および負 極リード部材をかしめにより接続した状態でケース中に収容し、素子に電解液を含浸 して蓋で密閉している。
[0004] 電気二重層キャパシタの電解液としては、硫酸等の鉱酸、アルカリ金属塩またはァ ルカリ等を含有する水系電解液のほかに、非水系電解液(有機電解液)が種々用い られている。非水系電解液は、耐電圧が 2. 5〜3. 3Vであり、一方、水系電解液は 0 . 8Vである。キャパシタの静電エネルギーは耐電圧の 2乗に比例するので、静電工 ネルギ一の点では非水系電解液の方が有利である。
[0005] 非水系電解液に用いられる溶媒は、電解質の溶解性が高い必要があるため、誘電 率の高い溶媒であるのが好ましい。具体的には、プロピレンカーボネート、 γ—プチ
口ラタトン、ァセトニトリル、ジメチルホルムアミド(特許文献 4参照。)、スルホランまた はその誘導体 (特許文献 5参照。)、フルォロベンゼン (特許文献 6参照。)等が知ら れている。
しかしながら、誘電率の高い溶媒は一般に粘性が高ぐ高い電気伝導度が得られ ないという問題があった。
[0006] 一方、低粘性溶媒である鎖状エーテル類、鎖状エステル類、鎖状カーボネート類 等は、誘電率が低いため、電解質をほとんど溶解することができず、高い電気伝導度 が得られな!/、と!/、う問題があった。
[0007] 非水系電解液の溶媒として一般的に用いられているプロピレンカーボネートは、誘 電率が高ぐかつ、室温では比較的粘度が高くないため、好ましく用いられている。 しかしながら、溶媒としてプロピレンカーボネートを用い、電解質として電気伝導度 が高い(C H ) N+、(C H ) P+、 (C H ) (CH ) N+等をカチオンとする塩を用いた非 水系電解液は、室温付近では比較的良好な電気伝導度を有するものの、低温では 電気伝導度の低下が顕著であるため、この非水系電解液を用いた電気二重層キヤ パシタは低温特性が悪!/、とレ、う問題があった。
[0008] これに対し、特許文献 7にお!/、ては、粘性率が低ぐ優れた低温特性を示すことを 目的とした、ジメチルカーボネート及びプロピレンカーボネートを含有する混合溶媒 中、テトラフルォロホウ酸第 4級スピロアンモニゥムが電解質として含有されてなること を特徴とする電気二重層キャパシタ用非水系電解液が記載されている。
[0009] また、本発明者らは、特許文献 8にお!/、て、電解質が RaRbReRdN+ (ただし、 R\ Rb は独立に炭素数 1〜4のアルキル基であり、 R\ Rdは共同でテトラメチレン基を形成し て環状のピロリジユウムカチオンとなってレ、る)で表されるピロリジユウムカチオンを有 し、溶媒としてジメチルカーボネート、スルホランおよびフルォロベンゼンを含む電解 液を提案している。
この電解液は、上記ピロリジユウムカチオンを有する電解質が低誘電率かつ低粘性 の溶媒であるジメチルカーボネートに対して高い溶解性を有していること、溶媒として 低電解質濃度領域での溶液の均一性を向上させるスルホランを加えること、さらに、 溶媒として融点が 42°Cと低ぐ低粘性溶媒であるフルォロベンゼンを加えることに
より、低温領域においても動作可能な、低抵抗の電気二重層キャパシタを実現するこ と力 Sできる。

発明の開示
発明が解決しょうとする課題
[0011] しかしながら、本発明者らが検討したところ、特許文献 7および 8に記載されている 各電解液は、最近の、より低温特性に優れる電気二重層キャパシタを得るためには、 未だ十分な低温特性を有してレ、なレ、ことが分かった。
そこで、本発明は、低温特性に優れる電気二重層キャパシタ用非水系電解液およ び電気二重層キャパシタを提供すること、より具体的には、室温および低温において 優れた充放電特性(特に、出力特性)を有する電気二重層キャパシタならびにそれに 用いられる低温での電気伝導度に優れる非水系電解液を提供することを目的とする

課題を解決するための手段
[0012] 本発明者は、上記目的を達成すべく鋭意研究した結果、電解質と特定のフルォロ ベンゼンと特定の環状カーボネートとを、特定の割合で、特に、特定のフルォロベン ゼンの量を従来になく多く含有させることにより、電解液の低温特性が極めて優れた ものになることを見出し、本発明を完成させた。
[0013] 即ち、本発明は、以下の(1)〜(7)を提供する。
(1) 15〜40質量%の電解質と、 30質量%を超え 45質量%以下の下記式 1で表さ れるフルォロベンゼンと、 15〜55質量%の下記式 2で表される環状カーボネートとを
含有する電気二重層キャパシタ用非水系電解液。

発明の効果
[0020] 本発明の電気二重層キャパシタ用非水系電解液および本発明の電気二重層キヤ パシタは、低温特性に優れている。
発明を実施するための最良の形態
[0021] 以下、本発明を詳細に説明する。初めに、本発明の電気二重層キャパシタ用非水 系電解液(以下、単に「本発明の電解液」という。)について説明する。
本発明の電解液は、 15〜40質量%の電解質と、 30質量%を超え 45質量%以下 の下記式 1で表されるフルォロベンゼンと、 15〜55質量%の下記式 2で表される環 状カーボネートとを含有する非水系電解液である。

[0024] 本発明に用いられるフルォロベンゼンは、上記式 1で表されるものであれば、特に 限定されないが、誘電率の大きいものが好ましぐ具体的には、モノフルォロベンゼン 、ジフルォロベンゼンおよびトリフルォロベンゼンからなる群から選ばれる少なくとも 1 種であるのが好ましい。ジフルォロベンゼンの構造としては、 o ジフルォロベンゼン 、 m—ジフルォロベンゼンが好ましい。トリフルォロベンゼンの構造としては、 1 , 2, 3 トリフルォロベンゼン、 1 , 2, 4 トリフルォロベンゼンが好ましい。
これらは単独で用いることもでき、 2種以上を併用することもできる。
[0025] 本発明の電解液におけるフルォロベンゼンの含有量は、電解液全量に対して、 30 質量%を超え 45質量%以下であり、好ましくは 33質量%を超え 42質量%以下であ フルォロベンゼンの含有量が 30質量%を超えると、低温、特に 30°C以下の低温 における電解液の電気伝導度が優れたものになる。
一方、電解液がフルォロベンゼンを含有すると、電解液全体(有機混合溶媒)の誘 電率が低くなるので、イオン伝導性が低くなり、特に室温付近以上の温度でその影響 が顕著になることがある。フルォロベンゼンの含有量が 45質量%以下であると、その ような問題が生じにくい。
[0026] 本発明における作用原理は必ずしも明確ではないが、フルォロベンゼンは、融点 がー 42°Cであって低温においても粘性率の低い溶媒であり、また、鎖状カーボネー
ト等よりは多少大きな誘電率を有していることから、フルォロベンゼンが上述した特定 の量範囲で電解液中に含有されることにより、低温における電解液の粘性率の低減 およびイオンの解離状態の確保が促進され、高!/、イオン導電率が維持されるものと 推定される。
[0027] 特許文献 6においては、フルォロベンゼンを含有する非水系電解液が記載されて おり([請求項 1] )、フルォロベンゼンが電解液全質量中に 0. 1-30%,特に 1〜20 %含まれることが好ましい旨記載されており([0016] )、溶媒として、このフルォ口べ ンゼンと、プロピレンカーボネート等とを併用することができる旨記載されている([00 26コ)。
しかしながら、この非水系電解液は、低温特性の向上を目的としたものでなぐまた 、フルォロベンゼンの量が少なすぎるために低温特性に劣る。
これに対して、本発明の電解液は、フルォロベンゼンの量が 30質量%を超え 45質 量%以下と極めて多ぐかつ、環状カーボネートを必須成分としているため、フルォロ ベンゼンが低温における電解液の粘性率を低減させ、かつ、誘電率が高い環状カー ボネートがフノレオ口ベンゼンを多く含有することによる室温付近以上の温度における 誘電率の低下を補うので、室温および低温にお!/、て優れた電気伝導性を示す。
[0028] 本発明に用いられる環状カーボネートは、上記式 2で表されるものであり、具体的に は、エチレンカーボネート、プロピレンカーボネート、ブチレンカーボネートである。中 でも、広い範囲で均一溶液を形成可能である点で、プロピレンカーボネートが好まし い。
これらは単独で用いることもでき、 2種以上を併用することもできる。
[0029] 本発明の電解液における環状カーボネートの含有量は、電解液全量に対して、 15
〜55質量%であり、好ましくは 30〜45質量%である。上記範囲であると、低温から 室温付近以上の温度にお!/、て、溶媒への電解質の十分な溶解性と電解液の高!、電 気伝導性を確保することができる。
[0030] 本発明においては、誘電率が高い環状カーボネートを用いるので、電解質の溶解 性が高い。
仮に、環状カーボネートの代わりに鎖状カーボネートを用いるとすると、鎖状カーボ
ネートが環状カーボネートより誘電率が低いため、電解質の溶解性が低くなる。この 場合、電解質として、ホウフッ化 1—ェチル—3—メチルイミダゾリゥム(EMIBF、後
4 述する式 8で表される電解質)等のイオン性液体を用いると、層分離が生じてしまう。 また、電解質として、ホウフッ化工チルメチルピロリジニゥム(EMPyBF、後述する式

6で表される電解質)やホウフッ化メチルプロピルピロリジニゥム(MPPyBF、後述す
4 る式 7で表される電解質)を用いると、極めて狭!/、濃度範囲にお!/、ては均一溶液とな る力 それより高い濃度でも低い濃度でも均一にはならない。このことは、低温におい て、より顕著である。
このように、環状カーボネートの代わりに鎖状カーボネートを用いると、電解質の溶 解性が低くなつて均一溶液を得ることが困難になり、たとえ均一溶液を得たとしても、 電解質の溶解性が低いため、特に低温において、電気伝導度が低くなる(後述する 実施例の例 11 (比較例)参照。 )。
[0031] 特許文献 8においては、溶媒としてジメチルカーボネート、スルホランおよびフルォ 口ベンゼンを含む電解液が記載されて!/、る。
しかしながら、この電解液は、鎖状カーボネートであるジメチルカーボネートを用い ており、かつ、ジメチルカーボネート(融点約 4°C)よりも融点が高いスルホラン(融点 2 8°C)を必須成分として含有するため、環状カーボネートを用いる本発明の電解液に 比べて、低温における電気伝導度が低ぐ最近の、より低温における優れた出力特 性の要求を満たす程度に十分な低温特性を有して!/、な!/、。
[0032] 本発明の電解液は、溶媒として、上記フルォロベンゼンおよび上記環状カーボネ ート以外の第 3の有機溶媒を 3〜30質量%含有するのが好ましい態様の一つである 。第 3の有機溶媒を上記範囲で含有することにより、電気伝導度の温度依存性を小さ くすること力 Sでさる。
第 3の有機溶媒は、単独で用いることもでき、 2種以上を併用することもできる。 第 3の有機溶媒は、スルホラン、ジメチルカーボネート、ジェチルカーボネートおよ びェチルメチルカーボネートからなる群から選ばれる少なくとも 1種であるのが好まし い。中でも、第 3の有機溶媒として、ジメチルカーボネートを用いると、室温における 電気伝導性を高く維持しつつ、低温における電気伝導性を高くすることができる点で
、好ましい。これは、ジメチルカーボネートを用いることにより、低温における粘性率の 上昇が抑制されるためであると考えられる。
[0033] 本発明に用いられる電解質は、特に限定されず、例えば、従来公知の電気二重層 キャパシタ用非水系電解液に用いられる電解質を用いることができる力 電気伝導性 、溶解度および電気化学的安定性の点で、下記式 3で表される第四級ォニゥムカチ オン、下記式 4で表されるイミダゾリウムカチオンおよび下記式 5で表される第四級ォ ユウムカチオンからなる群から選ばれる少なくとも 1種のカチオンを有するのが好まし い。

[0039] 本発明の電解液における電解質の含有量は、電解液全量に対して、 15〜40質量
%であり、好ましくは 18〜30質量%である。上記範囲であると、電解質の質量モル濃 度を後述する好適範囲とすることが容易となる。
本発明の電解液における電解質の質量モル濃度は、電気二重層形成に必要なィ オン量を確保し、十分な電気伝導性を得る目的から、 0. 8mol/kg以上であるのが 好ましく、 1. Omol/kg以上であるのがより好ましい。
また、電解質の質量モル濃度が高すぎると、電解液の粘性率が上昇し、電気導電 性の低下を招く。特に、低温においてはその影響が顕著になるため、電解質の質量 モル濃度は、 2. Omol/kg以下であるのが好ましい。
[0040] 本発明の電解液においては、上述した電解質、フルォロベンゼンおよび環状カー ボネートの組合せを特に限定されず、各種の組合せで用いることができる。

本発明の電気二重層キャパシタは、一対の分極性電極と、前記一対の分極性電極 の界面に電気二重層を形成する電解液とを有する電気二重層キャパシタであって、 前記電解液が、本発明の電気二重層キャパシタ用非水系電解液である、電気二重 層キャパシタである。
[0044] 本発明に用いられる一対の分極性電極は、電気化学的に不活性な高比表面積の 材料を主体とするものであるのが好ましい。例えば、従来公知の電気二重層キャパシ タに用いられる分極性電極を用いることができる。
分極性電極は、主として、炭素材料と導電性物質とを有するものが好ましい。中で も、金属集電体の表面に、炭素材料の粉末と導電性物質とを有する電極層が形成さ れた分極性電極が好まし!/、。
[0045] 炭素材料は、比表面積の大きいものを用いるのが好ましい。比表面積の大きい炭 素材料としては、例えば、活性炭、ポリアセンが好適に挙げられる。
活性炭は、特に限定されず、例えば、やしがら等の天然植物組織;フエノール等の 合成樹脂;石炭、コータス、ピッチ等の化石燃料に由来するものが挙げられる。 活性炭は、賦活処理を施したものであるのが好ましい。活性炭の賦活方法は、活性 炭の原料によって異なる力 通常、水蒸気賦活法、アルカリ賦活法 (例えば、 KOH 賦活法)が用いられる。天然植物組織または化石燃料に由来する活性炭は、金属不 純物が比較的多く含まれることから、一般に、酸洗浄等による精製が必要である。ァ ルカリ賦活法によって賦活された活性炭は、賦活に用いたアルカリ金属や、賦活装 置からアルカリとの反応によって持ち込まれた金属不純物が多いため、同様に、洗浄 が必要である。
本発明においては、合成樹脂を原料とし、水蒸気賦活法により賦活処理した活性 炭 (水蒸気賦活炭)が、金属不純物の含有量が少ない点で、好ましい。
[0046] 比表面積の大きい炭素材料は、多孔性であり、窒素吸着法による細孔容積が 0. 9 〜; 1. 6mL/gであるのが好ましい。低温において大電流充放電をする場合には、細
孔容積が 0. 9mL/g以上であると、セルの内部抵抗が小さくなり、優れた性能が得ら れる。細孔容積が 1. 6mL/g以下であると、嵩密度が適度に大きくなるため、分極性 電極の体積あたりの静電容量が十分に確保され、優れた性能が得られる。
したがって、本発明の電気二重層キャパシタにおいては、一対の分極性電極が、 細孔容積が 0. 9〜; 1. 6mL/gの炭素材料を構成成分として含むのが好ましい態様 の一つである。
[0047] 導電性物質は、特に限定されないが、例えば、カーボンブラック、アセチレンブラッ ク、ケッチェンブラック、カーボンゥイスカー、金属微粒子、導電性酸化物微粒子が挙 げられる。
[0048] 電極層は、上述した炭素材料に、上述した導電性物質と、ポリテトラフルォロェチレ ン(PTFE)、ポリフッ化ビニリデン(PVdF)、カルボキシメチルセルロース等の結合剤 とを加え、アルコール等の液体潤滑剤の存在下で混練し、ロール圧延等によりシート 状に成形し、乾燥させて得られるシート状成形物を、金属集電体の両面に熱圧着し、 または導電性接着剤等を介して接合することにより形成させるのが好ましい態様の一 つである。
また、上述した炭素材料に、上述した導電性物質と、上記結合剤とを加え、更に、 上記結合剤を溶解することができる溶媒またはそのような溶媒を含む混合溶媒 (例え ば、水、 N—メチルピロリドン等との混合溶媒)を混合させて得られるスラリーを、金属 集電体の両面に塗布し、乾燥させて形成させるのも好ましい態様の一つである。 電極層の厚さは、特に限定されないが、通常、 10 111〜0. 5mm程度である。
[0049] 本発明の電気二重層キャパシタは、素子構成を特に限定されず、コイン型構造、円 筒型構造、角型構造等とすることができる。
コイン型構造は、例えば、一対の分極性電極の間にセパレータを配置して素子を 形成し、前記素子を本発明の電解液とともにコイン型の金属ケースに収容し、金属封 口蓋体および両者を絶縁するガスケットにより密封して形成することができる。

円筒型構造や角型構造の場合は、アルミニウム、ステンレス鋼、ニッケル、タンタル 等の金属の粗面化箔、網等が好適に用いられる。中でも、ステンレス鋼、アルミニウム 、それらの合金の箔ゃ網等が好ましぐ 99. 9質量%以上、中でも、 99. 99質量%以 上の純度のアルミニウム箔がより好ましレ、。
本発明においては、金属集電体は、厚さが 10 111〜0. 5mm程度の金属箔からな るものが好ましい。
[0053] 上述したように、円筒型構造や角型構造の場合、金属集電体には集電リードを形 成する。具体的には、金属集電体上に電極層の形成されていないテープ状またはリ ボン状の部分を設け、そこに導電性のタブ端子、線、テープ、リボン等を溶接等により 接合して集電リードを形成するのが好ましい。
また、金属集電体の一部に電極層を形成していない部分を設け、この部分を集電リ ードとして用いることもできる。円筒型構造の場合を例に挙げて説明すると、例えば、 帯状の金属集電体の幅方向の一方の端に、長さ方向に延在する電極層が形成され ていない帯状部を設け、一対の分極性電極を、帯状部が互いに逆向きになるように
配置してセパレータを介して重ね、巻回して得られた素子の両端面(上記帯状部)を 集電リードとすることができる。
[0054] セパレータは、イオンを通過する多孔質セパレータであれば特に限定されず、例え ば、微孔性ポリエチレンフィルム、微孔性ポリプロピレンフィルム、ポリエチレン不織布 、ポリプロピレン不織布、ガラス繊維混抄不織布、ガラスマットフィルタ、セルロース紙 、サイザル麻、マニラ麻が好適に挙げられる。
セパレータの厚さは、 20〜200〃111でぁるのカ 子ましく、 30〜; 100〃 mであるのが より好ましい。
セパレータの空隙率は、電解液に対する吸液性、保液性、内部抵抗の点では高い ほど好ましいが、空隙率が高いほどピンホール等の欠陥が増大し、自己放電不良が 発生するおそれが増加するので、通常、 50〜90%であるのが好ましぐ 60-85% であるのがより好ましい。

3.電気二重層キャパシタの作製 (その 1)
[例 12 (実施例) ]
水蒸気賦活された比表面積 2000m2/g、細孔容積 0. 9mL/gのフエノール樹脂 系活性炭と PTFEとカーボンブラックとの質量比 8: 1: 1の混合物に、エタノールを加 えて混練した。これをシート状に成形した後、厚さ 0. 2mmとなるようにロール圧延し
て電極シートを得た。
得られた電極シートを厚さ 40 a mのアルミニウム箔の片面に導電性接着剤を介し て接着した。電極シートを貼り付けた部分を 2cm角とし、電極シートを貼り付けていな いアルミニウム箔のみの部分を外部回路接続時のリード部として有する形に切り出し て、試験用のリード付き電極を得た。
得られたリード付き電極を、減圧下で加熱処理して水分等を除去した。ついで、ポリ プロピレン繊維不織布製のセパレータ(厚さ 160 m、空隙率 70%)を介して一対の リード付き電極を対向させ、その両側からガラス製の挟持板で挟んで固定し、素子を 形成した。
この素子に例 1の電解液を含浸させた後、素子をアルミニウムラミネート容器にリー ド部のみが外に出るようにして入れて、密封し、試験用の電気二重層キャパシタを得 た。

例 20〜22の電気二重層キャパシタの大電流パルス放電時(放電電流密度 125m A/cm2,パルス幅 50ms)の内部抵抗を 30°Cおよび—30°Cにおいて測定し、 30°C における内部抵抗に対する 30°Cにおける内部抵抗の比(内部抵抗増加率)を算 出した。結果を第 3表に示す。
[0085] 第 1表から分かるように、本発明の電解液 (例;!〜 8)は、低温での電気伝導度が高
ぐ室温における電気伝導度に対する低温における電気伝導度の比(電気伝導度保 持率)が高い。
これに対して、フルォロベンゼンの量が少なすぎ、かつ、環状カーボネートの量が 多すぎる場合(例 9)およびフルォロベンゼンの量が少なすぎ、かつ、電解質の量が 多すぎる場合 (例 10)は、いずれも低温での電気伝導度が低ぐ電気伝導度保持率 が低い。また、環状カーボネートを用いずに鎖状カーボネートであるジメチルカーボ ネートを用いた場合 (例 11)は、低温での電気伝導度が低い。
[0086] また、第 2表から分かるように、本発明の電気二重層キャパシタ(例 12〜17)は、室 温における静電容量に対する低温における静電容量の比(静電容量保持率)が大き ぐ室温における内部抵抗に対する低温における内部抵抗の比(内部抵抗増加率) 力小さぐ低温特性に優れている。
さらに、第 3表から分かるように、本発明の電気二重層キャパシタにおいて、特定の 細孔容積を有する活性炭を電極に使用した場合 (例 20および 21)は、使用しない場 合 (例 22)に比べて、大電流ノ ルス放電時の室温における内部抵抗に対する低温に おける内部抵抗の比(内部抵抗増加率)が小さぐ低温での大電流パルス放電特性 に優れている。
産業上の利用可能性
[0087] 本発明における電解液は、低抵抗で、耐電圧が高ぐ特に低温特性に優れて!/、る 。したがって、本発明によれば、低抵抗で、耐電圧が高ぐ低温特性に優れた電気二 重層キャパシタが提供できる。 なお、 2006年 8月 11曰に出願された曰本特許出願 2006— 219711号の明細書 、特許請求の範囲及び要約書の全内容をここに引用し、本発明の明細書の開示とし て、取り入れるものである。
