Definitions

  • This invention relates to a vehicle chair frame structure comprising a seat cushion frame pivoted to a seat bottom support and a backrest frame about respective forward and rearward horizontal transverse axes.
  • a vehicle chair frame structure of the above referenced kind is disclosed, for example in GB 2099691 A .
  • Truck seats are usually provided with a spring suspension to shield the seat occupants from excessive vertical movements of the truck driver's cabin.
  • the spring suspension is often implemented in an articulated suspension mechanism in the seat bottom support that provides a vertical cushioning action to the seat including the backrest.
  • the suspension mechanism will inevitably have to be relatively massive and bulky.
  • a recent trend of securing the high anchor points of the seat belts in the backrest frame puts still higher demands on the strength of the structure.
  • the vertical movements of the seat can also impair driving safety, as a sudden downward movement of the seat may easily result in a distracted driver's lower leg accidentally pushing the foot towards the accelerator or brake pedal.
  • the backrest frame comprises a resiliently compressible extension pivoted to the seat bottom support about a third horizontal transverse axis.
  • the compressible extension can serve the functions of both an improved seat spring suspension and an efficient support for the backrest frame.
  • the spring suspension provided by the resiliently compressible backrest extension makes the seat cushion frame pivotable only, about the forward joint to the seat bottom support.
  • the forward end of the seat cushion will thereby be subjected to negligible movements only that do not adversely affect the driver's lower legs while the rearward sections of the seat may swing considerably up and down.
  • Also beneficial for driving safety is that the driver's head and eyes will not move as much up and down as in a swinging conventional spring-suspended seat; driver's head and eyes will rather closely follow a shallow upper section of a circular path having its center at the above mentioned forward joint.
  • the backrest frame support provided by the extension allows the backrest frame to withstand substantial impact forces and confidently hold a high anchor point for a seat belt.
  • the extension is part of a cylinder-rod assembly comprising the portion of the rod extending out of the assembly together with a portion of the cylinder.
  • the backrest frame may then comprise the remaining cylinder or piston chamber of the cylinder-rod assembly and also form the cylinder, to thereby function both as a structural element of the seat and an integral part of the seat suspension assembly.
  • the cylinder-rod assembly may optionally be reversed, by the extension comprising also the cylinder of the assembly.
  • a separate cylinder-rod unit may, however, alternatively also be supported by the backrest frame.
  • the inclination of the backrest frame may conveniently be adjusted by the provision of means such as a linear electric or fluid actuator in the seat bottom support for moving the bottom end of the extension forward and rearward.
  • Fig. 1 is a rotated model view of a vehicle chair having a seat frame structure according to the invention
  • Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic side view showing a seat frame structure according to the invention in an unloaded state
  • Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2 showing the frame structure in a state weighed down as by a sitting person
  • Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2 showing a modified frame structure in an unloaded state and having the backrest inclined rearwards.
  • the seat frame structure 10 shown in the drawings comprises a seat cushion frame 20, a seat bottom support 30 and a backrest frame 40.
  • the seat cushion frame 20 comprises a pair of spaced longitudinal, generally horizontal bars
  • the seat bottom support 30 comprises a framework that also includes a pair of spaced longitudinal bars 32 connected to respective forward verticjaMDars 34 and interconnected by a number of transverse bars 38.
  • Inclined struts 36 extending between the respective longitudinal and vertical bars 32 and 34 act as supports for the vertical bars 34.
  • the backrest frame 40 comprises a spaced pair of generally vertically inclined backrest beams or bars 42 interconnected by a top transverse bar 44 and adapted to support a backrest 54.
  • the backrest frame 40 also has a resiliently compressible extension 46.
  • the extension 46 that makes the backrest frame 40 capable of withstanding substantial forward and backward forces, comprises a pair of retractable rods 48 such as piston rods supported slidably and spring-biased downwards, for example by gas springs, in the respective backrest bars 42, which thereby form cylinders for the piston rods 48.
  • each piston rod 48 may alternatively be included in a seat spring suspension assembly similar to those commonly used in office chairs and comprising a separate cylinder-rod suspension unit 50 such as a gas spring unit received in the respective backrest bar 42.
  • the retractable extension 46 needs not necessarily be retractable into the backrest frame 40.
  • An optional, reversed arrangement of a cylinder-rod suspension unit 52 (Fig. 4) may be suitable for purposes of possibly shifting volume, weight, and components from the backrest bars 40 to the bottom support 30.
  • the seat cushion frame 20, seat bottom support 30 and backrest frame 40 are pivotally interconnected as follows.
  • the seat cushion frame 20 is pivoted about a transverse horizontal axis by forward joints A to a front top end of the seat bottom support 30, namely to respective top ends of the vertical bars 34. Rearwards, the seat cushion frame 20 is pivoted about a transverse horizontal axis by joints B to the seat frame 40, namely to respective bottom portions of the backrest bars .. ⁇ 2 ⁇ F
  • the bottom support 30 is adapted for being slidably attached to a pair of slide rails 62 (only one is shown) of a vehicle compartment floor structure 60 to allow forward or rearward adjustment of the chair frame structure 10.
  • the chair frame structure 10 is made adjustable as follows, with reference to Figs. 2-4.
  • the seat bottom support 30 is connected to an actuator 70, such as a linear electric or fluid actuator secured to the floor structure 60 and capable of pushing and pulling the bottom support 30, for example via a rod 72, in a well-known manner along the rails 62 to positions controlled by the person occupying the seat structure 10.
  • an actuator 70 such as a linear electric or fluid actuator secured to the floor structure 60 and capable of pushing and pulling the bottom support 30, for example via a rod 72, in a well-known manner along the rails 62 to positions controlled by the person occupying the seat structure 10.
  • each joint C is mounted to a respective telescoping member 76 axially displaceable relative to the respective longitudinal bar 32 of the bottom support 30.
  • a backrest inclination actuator 74 such as a linear electric or fluid actuator connected between the slidable bottom support 30 and members 76, is provided for displacing members 76 forward and backward along the rails 62 to thereby adjust the inclination of the backrest frame 40.
  • another linear actuator may be provided to raise and lower joints A relative to the vertical bars 34 via any suitable mechanism, for example a screw or cam mechanism (not shown).
  • the above-mentioned units 50 may be slidably received in the respective backrest bar 42 and be movably adjusted along bar 42 by still another linear actuator (not shown).
  • the latter height may also be adjusted by varying, for example a pre-load (or volume) of the (gas) spring acting on each rod 48 (not shown).
  • T ⁇ lastic and cushioning properties of the suspension units 50, 52 may be controlled for example by a fluid power control system in a vehicle where the vehicle chair frame structure 10 is installed (not shown).
  • the extension 46 needs not necessarily be in line with the backrest frame 40 but may alternatively be curved or elbowed to or from the seat bottom support, for example for saving space or to obtain a desired angular movement path of the backrest (not shown).
