Definitions
- This invention relates to blocks for use in permeable pavements and to a pavement comprising a plurality of such blocks.
- a block suitable for use in permeable pavements having top, bottom and side faces, at least one side face including a flat part, a recessed part and a projecting part, wherein the recessed part is recessed inwards from the flat part of the side face by a distance (d) , the projecting part projects outwards from the flat part of the side face by a distance (D) which is greater than the distance (d) , the projecting part has a curved face curved about an axis transverse to the plane of the top of the block, and the recessed part has a curved face curved about an axis transverse to the plane of the top of the block and matching the curvature of the projecting part.
- the curved face of the projecting part is of circular cylindrical shape.
- the engagement of projecting and recessed parts of the faces of adjacent blocks can be arranged to be substantially independent of the relative angles of the blocks, for a limited range of relative angles.
- the radius of curvature of the projecting part and the recessed part are similar and are preferably the same (and, if different, the radius of curvature of the projecting part is preferably less than that of the recessed part) ; preferably the radius of curvature is in the range of 5 to 30 mm. In an embodiment of the ' invention the radius of curvature is about 10 mm.
- the angle subtended by the curved face of the projecting part is preferably in the range of 117 to 147 degrees; in an embodiment of the invention the angle subtended is about 132 degrees.
- the angle subtended by the curved face of the recessed part is preferably in the range of 121 to 151 degrees; in an embodiment of the invention the angle subtended is about 136 degrees.
- the recessed part and the projecting part are preferably disposed on the side face of the block adjacent to one another. That facilitates the relative positioning of adjacent blocks during laying.
- each side face includes a flat part, a recessed part and a projecting part.
- the recessed part and the projecting part on each side face are substantially the same and are spaced apart from one another by substantially the same distance on each side face.
- the block may be in any of a variety of shapes (e.g. ⁇ L' shaped, octagon shaped, hexagon shaped) , but it is preferred that the block has four side faces and is of generally rectangular shape (when viewed from above) .
- the block may be square but preferably two opposite side faces are longer than the other two opposite side faces, the longer opposite side faces each having two recessed parts and two projecting parts and the other opposite side faces each having one recessed part and one projecting part.
- the side faces of the block preferably have 180° rotational symmetry about an axis perpendicular to the top of the block and indeed the block as a whole may have such 180° rotational symmetry.
- a paving comprising a plurality of blocks, each block being as defined above, the projecting part of a first block engaging in the recessed part of a second block.
- the projecting part of the second block engages in the recessed part of the first block.
- the blocks may be laid in a herringbone, stretcher, header or soldier pattern.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a paving block
- Fig. 2 is a plan view of the paving block of Fig. 1 with various dimensions and shapes indicated;
- Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of paving laid using the block shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
- a paving block- 1 having a top 2, side faces 3, 4, 5 and 6 and a bottom (not visible) .
- the side faces 3, 4, 5 and 6 are perpendicular to the top 2 and bottom of the block.
- the top 2 and bottom of the block are horizontal and the side faces are vertical.
- the block is of generally rectangular shape when viewed from above and the side faces 3 and 5 are longer than the other side faces 4 and 6.
- Each of the side faces 3 and 5 has flat parts 7, two projecting parts 8 that project outwards from the flat parts 7 by a distance D and two recessed parts 9 that are recessed inwards from the flat parts 7 by a distance d which is less than the distance D.
- Each of the side faces 4 and 6 has flat parts 7, one projecting part 8 and one recessed part 9.
- Each of the projecting parts 8 are of the same size and shape and similarly each of the recessed parts 9 are of identical size and shape. Furthermore, as can be seen in Figs.
- each projecting part 8 has a recessed part 9 adjacent thereto and the relative positioning of the projecting part 8 and the recessed part 9 is the same in each case. Furthermore, the projecting parts 8 and the recessed parts 9 are arranged on the side faces such that the side faces of the block (and the block as a whole) have 180° rotational symmetry about a central axis perpendicular to the top of the block.
- the block has chamfered edges 10.
- Each projecting part 8 has a curved face 11 which defines part of a surface of a cylinder of circular cross- section having a radius of curvature R and a longitudinal axis perpendicular to the top of the block.
- the curved face 11 is joined to adjacent flat parts 7 of a side face by curved bridging portions 12.
- each recessed part 9 has a curved face 13 which defines part of a surface of a cylinder of circular cross-section having a radius of curvature R, which is the same as the radius of curvature of the curved face 11 of the projecting part 8, and a longitudinal axis perpendicular to the top of the block.
- the curved face 13 is joined to adjacent flat parts 7 of a side face by curved bridging portions 14.
- the block is made of concrete and has the following dimensions: Length (L) measured between the flat parts 7 of the opposite side faces 4 and 6: 194 mm Width (W) measured between the flat parts 7 of the opposite side faces 3 and 5: 94 mm Radius of curvature (R) of curved faces 11 and 13: 10 mm
- Fig. 3 shows the blocks laid (either by machine or manually) in a typical herringbone pattern with projecting parts 8 of the blocks engaging in recessed parts 9 of. adjoining blocks.
- each block has an effective length that is twice its effective width in order to be suitable for laying in this pattern.
- the effective length and width of the block is the distance between the flat parts of the side faces plus a further distance (in the particular example illustrated above, 6 mm) to allow for the gaps that are created between the side faces when the blocks are laid.
- a rectangular block 1 may be regarded as made up of two notional square blocks each having an ef.fective length and width of about 101mm and with a projecting part 8 and recessed part 9 provided midway along a side face of the notional block.
- the blocks are shown without any jointing material in the gaps formed between blocks.
- the gaps which provide the permeability of the pavement, are filled with a permeable material such as a gravel.
- the block may be of square or 'L' shape and the number or dimensions of the recessed and projecting parts may be varied.
