En fonction de données concernant la position, et représentant la position momentanée du véhicule, et de données relatives aux tronçons, et représentant la géographie des tronçons de voies de circulation payants, l'utilisation d'un tronçon payant (ou d'une zone géographique) par un véhicule est déterminée, des données caractéristiques (données d'utilisation) sur l'utilisation de l'équipement étant transmises à un poste central, à des fins de facturation des taxes d'utilisation, et ce par des moyens sans fil en temps proche du réel.
