Definitions

  • This invention relates to commercial or retail sales transactions, and in particular to an in-store customer checkout transaction and the receipt generated thereby.
  • the conventional check out procedure for a commercial or retail sales transaction generates and prints out a paper receipt which is given to the customer.
  • the pricing information printed at the cash register is generally scanned from a UPC bar code on a tag attached to the product, and the receipt form may also contain preprinted advertising or other promotional information. It will be noted that this procedure is static in the sense that there is no interactive two-way exchange of information between the seller and the buyer in the transaction reflected on the receipt. All the information contained on the receipt is substantially seller oriented as it is originated by the seller.
  • the present invention overcomes this limitation, and generates a receipt in a form that permits its use in dynamic and multi-faceted interactions between the buyer and seller.
  • a method and system are disclosed for providing a receipt embodied in a digital medium as part of the checkout of a purchased item.
  • a scanner at the point-of- sale cash register reads the barcode attached to the product and through an intermediary Proxy Server receives product price information from a UPC or other product database.
  • the term "cash register” covers conventional cash registers as well as functionally equivalent checkout stations employing electronic components that include a manual entry keyboard and a display.
  • the proxy server also transfers customer information provided in a check or credit card checkout transaction as well as the product information from the UPC database, to an intelligent contents aggregator, (ICA)which is also connected to a contents database.
  • ICA intelligent contents aggregator
  • the ICA based on the items purchased, downloads relevant information from the contents database, e.g. product warranty or similar data, for incorporation in the digital media receipt.
  • the data is transmitted from the ICA unit to a computer that activates a media writing device to generate the digital media receipt given to the customer.
  • Recorded on the digital media receipt is not only the relevant information related to the transaction, but also additional material generated by the system that is derived from the nature of the transaction. This may include, in addition to warranty registration information, care instructions, electronic coupons, related product advertising as examples of retailer selectable data to be recorded.
  • the digital media receipt may include pre-recorded information not related to the customer's specific transaction. For example, corporate background information or announcements of new stores or products may have been pre-recorded on all receipts.
  • Fig. 1 is block diagram of the system to generate a digital media receipt
  • Fig. 2 is a flow diagram showing the steps for generating a digital media receipt in accordance with the invention.
  • a scanner 10 reads information from the tag of a product being purchased, and electronically transfers the data identifying the product to a cash register 12.
  • the data is also sent to a proxy server 14 which requests the price and product information from a UPC barcode database 16, and the requested data is transferred back in the normal way to the cash register 12, through the proxy server 14.
  • the cash register 12 requires no modification when serving as a component in the system of the invention.
  • the proxy server 14 also routes this information to an intelligent contents aggregator (ICA) 18 which accumulates and groups the data in accordance with the types of the items purchased in the transaction.
  • ICA intelligent contents aggregator
  • the ICA transfers this grouping information to a contents database 20 which contains auxiliary information on the groups of products, and the contents database 20 sends back to the ICA group related data.
  • the ICA communicates this requirement to the contents database 20 which has warranty forms stored, and which transfers the warranty form back to the ICA 18.
  • personal customer information may be automatically entered into the form, such as the warranty form, at this time.
  • the contents database 20 may also provide additional data, for example, instructions for use of the product, tags to the website of the manufacturer of the product or other related websites, such as, for example, HTML tags, and advertising banners of similar products.
  • an abundance of allied information can be grouped, stored, and transferred out of the contents database 20 to be ultimately recorded on the digital media receipt under control of the ICA 18. All the data related to the transaction that has been accumulated in the ICA 18 is then transferred to a central computer 22. Once the transaction is completed, as signalled from the cash register 12, the central computer 22 outputs the data to a media writer (CS-WDM) which records the data in digital form on the digital media receipt.
  • CS-WDM media writer
  • the digital media receipt may be of any one of the large number of digital recording media available, for example: magnetic recording media such as, floppy disk, hi-density LS120 disc, magnetic striped card, IBM MicroDrive; optical recording media such as CD, CD-RW, CD-R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM; flash based memory as CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Multimedia card (MMC) , as well as hybrid digital storage media such as magneto-optical disk.
  • the digital media receipt is recorded in a format that is readable on a customer's appropriate electronic device , and is compatible with communication via the Internet.
  • the scanner 10 and cash register 12 are conventional devices known in the art.
  • the proxy server 14, UPC database 16, intelligent contents aggregator 18 and contents database 20 are implemented as one or several microprocessors programmed to perform the functions leading to readout and recording of the digital media receipt. Alternately, their functions may be incorporated into a central computer 22 which may either be an on-site general purpose computer or a centralized headquarters computer connected to company stores by an intranet system or equivalent data transmission system such as the Internet itself.
  • the CS- WDM digital receipt recorder is a media recorder connected to computer 22, and having a store of media receipts stored within it and a mechanism for advancing the media into the recorder and ejecting it from the machine when recording of the digital media receipt is complete.
  • FIG. 2 A flow chart of the programs running on the above designated computers is shown in Fig. 2. Scanning of barcodes 26 by the scanner 10 feeds product identification data to the cash register 12 and to the proxy server 12. The proxy server's 12 program acquires the price information by interrogating 28 the UPC database 16, and relaying the price information back to the cash register 12. This information is transferred to the ICA where it initiates transfer of relevant information from the contents database 20.
  • a branch 30 takes place in the program depending upon the payment method. If it is a credit card sale or a check sale then personal information is provided by the customer which is entered into the system at the cash register 10. This information is transferred to the proxy server 14. If it is a cash transaction, the customer is queried to determine if he/she has previously been registered, and if "yes" the personal information is accessed 34 and transferred 36 to the proxy server 14 and ICA. It is there merged with the information returned from the contents database 20, and provides 38, if appropriate, filled out forms related to the transaction. If the answer is "no" and the customer does not want to be registered, the program jumps to the step for aggregating all the information to be entered onto the digital magnetic receipt. The resultant information is transferred to the central computer 24 which reads out the formatted information to the CS-WDM to provide the finished digital media receipt 24.
  • the recording of the customer personal information may be skipped, so that the digital media receipt just contains product identification, price and aggregated contents information, Fig. 2, (27).
  • the central computer 22 may be omitted in a simplified implementation of the system, with the digital media receipt writer 24 being driven directly by the intelligent contents aggregator 18.
