Definitions
- This invention relates to a device for the reconditioning of bedding materials in animal stables, comprising a mobile wheeled frame carrying a drum which is rotatable around a laying geometric axis and includes a plurality of small holes through which fine bedding material - but not coarser droppings - may pass, and which is open at opposite ends in order to permit the throwing in of an unsorted mixture of bedding materials and droppings into one end, as well as feeding out droppings separated from the bedding material at the opposite end.
- a bed of bedding material is laid out on the floor in stalls or boxes, which bedding material frequently consists of sawdust or cutter shavings from the wood working industry.
- peat litter or other fi- brous material is also used.
- the bed In a fresh state, the bed may be built up to a considerable height, e.g. 150-300 mm, the material being fluffy while guaranteeing a soft bed.
- the bed is deteriorated in two essential respects, viz. so far that the originally voluminous bedding material is compressed during successive reduction of the height and softness of the bed, and so far that the natural droppings from the horse contaminate the material.
- the horse usually urinates in a fixed place in the box, e.g. in a corner, the compact droppings may be spread about here, there, and everywhere.
- the separation of the compact droppings takes place by the fact that the un- sorted material is thrown up in the air and is allowed to fall down on the shovel on repeated occasions, the droppings remaining on the shovel while the bedding material runs down through the holes. It is true that by means of this method, the drop- pings may be separated from the bedding material at the same time as it is aired while guaranteeing a fluffy bed, but the work with clearing the dung out of not only a single box, but a larger number of boxes in a stable becomes time-consuming and physically burdensome.
- the present invention aims at providing a device, which facilitates the reconditioning of bedding materials in animal stables.
- a primary object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which the work to separate reusable bedding material from compact droppings is rendered effective, so that the same may be carried out in a short time and with a minimum of physical effort.
- Another object is to provide a reconditioning device, which is structurally simple and thereby not only inexpensive to manufacture, but also easy to handle .
- a separation device which comprises a rotatable drum provided with holes is previously known by DK 9 500 418. However, in this case there is no board whatsoever forming a partition wall, which is able to serve as a stop for unsorted material thrown into the drum.
- Fig 1 is a partly cut perspective view showing the device according to the invention
- Fig 2 is a schematic side view of the device according to fig 1
- Fig 3 is a schematic section through the same device
- F"*g 4 is a side view corresponding to fig 2 showing the function of the device during sorting
- Fig 5 is a section corresponding to fig 3 showing the device during operation.
- a carrying frame is generally designated 1, while 2 designates a rotatable drum.
- the frame 1 is, in the shown example, composed of, on one hand, a pair of main legs 3, which extend obliquely upwards/backwards from lower, frontal ends to a house in its entirety designated 4. Obliquely downwards/backwards from the main legs 3, two support legs 5 extend, of which only one is visible in fig 1. At the lower ends thereof, each one of said support legs is provided with a wheel 6. Also the two the main legs 3 may advantageously be provided with wheels or pulleys 7 at the lower ends thereof.
- the drum 2 is of a rotary symmetric shape, more precisely a cylindric shape, and has a large number of small holes 8. In practice, these hole may advantageously be elongated.
- the holes may, for instance, have a length within the range of 40- 70 mm, suitably 50-60 mm, and a width within the range of 12-18 mm, suitably 14-15 mm.
- the drum is rotatable around a central, geometric axis, which in the state of operation of the device is laying. Although it is feasible per se to locate the rotation axis of the drum substantially horizontally, it is preferred to incline the same somewhat obliquely in the direction backwards/downwards from a frontal throwing- in or hopper open- ing 9.
- the drum may lean 2-4° backwards from the throwing- in opening 9.
- the drum 2 is not only open at the frontal end thereof, but also at the rear end thereof.
- the opening in the rear end of the drum is designated 10 and serves as a feeding-out opening for droppings.
- a board 11 forming a partition wall is arranged in the area between the two end openings 9, 10 of the drum.
- Said board has a smaller diameter than the diameter of the drum, whereby a gap 12 is provided between the periphery of the board and the inner surface of the drum.
- the board 11 is stiffly united to the drum by a suitable number of radial fingers 13.
- a similar, second board 14 is arranged near the feeding-out opening 10 of the drum. Also this board 14 has a smaller diameter than the drum and is united thereto by radial fingers 15.
- a circumfering gap between the inner surface of the drum and the periphery of the board 14 is designated 16.
- a central driving shaft 17 extends, which is rigidly connected to each one of the two boards, e.g.
- a motor 20 is built into the house 4, which motor, in the preferred example, consists of an electric motor.
- a chargeable battery 21 is detach- ably mounted on the frame 1.
- the battery 21 is placed on a bracing shelf 22 between the two support legs 5 of the frame.
- the motor 20 is connected to the driving shaft 17 by a transmission 23 in the shape of a V-belt or a cog belt.
- the motor 20 may, in a suitable way, be movable and fixable in various positions in relation to the house in order to permit stretching of the transmission belt.
- the drum may be carried in a cantilevered state as is shown in the drawings.
- a semicircular sheet-metal plate or plate 24 is arranged on top of the house 4, which plate has a larger diameter than the board 14, but a somewhat smaller diameter than the drum.
- a stand in its entirety designated 25 co-operates with the described device, said stand being provided with wheels 26.
- the lower part of the stand comprises an underbody 27 on which an upwardly open container 28 may be put.
- the upper part of the stand 25 consists of a handle -forming arch 29, which may be gripped by an operator.
- means 30 On the backside of the house 4, means 30 (see fig 1) are arranged by means of which the stand 25 may be detachably connected to the separation de- vice in its entirety.
- the connection means 30 may for instance consist of two movable, spring- loaded tenons which are in- sertable in holes in side pieces of the stand arch 29 and which may be removed from these holes when the mobile stand 25 is to be released from the separation device. In the immediate proximity to the throwing- in opening
- a wing 31 converging in the direction to the interior of the drum is arranged on the inner surface of the drum, said wing in the example consisting of a continuous ring.
- this wing By the existence of this wing, unintentional re- throwing out of material, which is thrown into the drum, is counteracted.
- a continuous ring it is also possible to arrange a plurality of small, mutually peripherically separated wings, which together converge in the direction inwards.
- the described separation device When the bedding in a horse box is to be reconditioned, the described separation device is brought into the box.
- bedding material may be removed by being directly shovelled o into the container 28.
- the material 32 in the bed being unsorted per se, but partly reusable, is shovelled into the drum 2 quite simply by being thrown into the opening 9 (see fig 4) by means of a shovel.
- the drum By means of the motor 20, the drum in driven in a rotating movement, which means that the fine material 33, e.g. sawdust or cutter shavings, is thrown out through the fine holes 8 in the envelope wall of the drum.
- the material is fed axially in the direction towards the rear open- ing 10 during the rotation of the drum.
- the fine components 33 are separated from the coarser droppings designated 34, which cannot permeate the holes 8.
- the droppings are fed out through the feeding-out opening 10 so as to immediately fall down into the container 28 positioned in the area under said opening.
- the separated, reusable components 33 will immediately fall down on the floor under the drum and be accumulated in a pile, which may, in a sim- pie way, be spread out in the box, preferably together with a smaller batch of added virgin bedding material.
- the bedding material is aired, whereby it is given the desired fluffiness in the formed material pile as well as the spread-out bed.
- the separation device according to the invention together with the appurtenant collecting container as a coherent unit may be moved to the next box in which the operation is repeated.
- the stand 25 may be released in a simple way from the device as such and be rolled out to a suitable dumping depository outside the stable.
- a substantial advantage of the device according to the invention is that compact droppings may be effectively separated from reusable bedding materials by means of a minimal physical input of work.
- the collecting container for the droppings is detachably connected to the separation device, the droppings may be taken care of without having to take the device in its entirety out from the stable .
