Definitions

  • This invention relates to a device for the reconditioning of bedding materials in animal stables, comprising a mobile wheeled frame carrying a drum which is rotatable around a laying geometric axis and includes a plurality of small holes through which fine bedding material - but not coarser droppings - may pass, and which is open at opposite ends in order to permit the throwing in of an unsorted mixture of bedding materials and droppings into one end, as well as feeding out droppings separated from the bedding material at the opposite end.
  • a bed of bedding material is laid out on the floor in stalls or boxes, which bedding material frequently consists of sawdust or cutter shavings from the wood working industry.
  • peat litter or other fi- brous material is also used.
  • the bed In a fresh state, the bed may be built up to a considerable height, e.g. 150-300 mm, the material being fluffy while guaranteeing a soft bed.
  • the bed is deteriorated in two essential respects, viz. so far that the originally voluminous bedding material is compressed during successive reduction of the height and softness of the bed, and so far that the natural droppings from the horse contaminate the material.
  • the horse usually urinates in a fixed place in the box, e.g. in a corner, the compact droppings may be spread about here, there, and everywhere.
  • the separation of the compact droppings takes place by the fact that the un- sorted material is thrown up in the air and is allowed to fall down on the shovel on repeated occasions, the droppings remaining on the shovel while the bedding material runs down through the holes. It is true that by means of this method, the drop- pings may be separated from the bedding material at the same time as it is aired while guaranteeing a fluffy bed, but the work with clearing the dung out of not only a single box, but a larger number of boxes in a stable becomes time-consuming and physically burdensome.
