Abstract

La norme canal fibre optique a été créée par le groupe de travail X3T11 de la norme nationale américaine pour les systèmes informatiques (ANSI) afin de définir un canal d'entrée/sortie série permettant de connecter un certain nombre de périphériques hétérogènes à des systèmes informatiques comme de connecter les systèmes informatiques eux-mêmes, par le biais de fibres optiques et de supports cuivre, et ce à des vitesses de l'ordre du gigabit (c'est à dire, à un milliard de bits par seconde). De nombreux protocoles tels que les protocoles SCSI (carte interface sérielle pour petits systèmes informatiques), IP (Internet Protocol), HIPPI, MTA (mode de transfert asynchrone), entre autres, peuvent, en parallèle, utiliser les mêmes supports une fois mappés sur le canal fibre optique. La structure canal fibre optique constitue une entité faisant transiter des trames de canal fibre optique entre des ports nodaux connectés. Cette structure achemine les trames en fonction d'adresse de destination comme en fonction d'autres informations intégrées dans l'en-tête de trame du canal fibre optique. Des ports nodaux sont rattachés à la structure canal fibre optique par le biais de liens.
