Definitions
- the present invention relates to the use of partially dehydrated castor oils as lubricants.
- the synthetic or natural esters are not only used as a base oil but also frequently as an additive in order to minimize wear (anti-wear) or welding (extreme pressure). In these cases, only small amounts of esters are added to known lubricants such as mineral oils. Although the synthetic or natural esters known from the prior art already have good lubricating properties which reduce wear, there is still a pronounced interest in new esters which minimize the welding better than the esters known from the prior art. In addition, the esters should be of natural origin as well as be easily accessible and biodegradable. The esters should also have excellent cold behavior for their use as base oil.
- the object of the present invention was to provide esters which meet this requirement.
- the present invention relates to the use of partially dehydrated castor oils with hydroxyl numbers in the range from 90 to 150 mg KOH / g as a lubricant.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils used according to the invention can be prepared by known processes by dehydrating castor oil with hydroxyl numbers in the range from 160 to 170 mg KOH / g in the presence of acidic catalysts such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, acid anhydrides, acid-reacting metal oxides or acid-reacting hydrogen-containing salts such as sodium hydrogen sulfate can be prepared at temperatures in the range from 200 to 300 ° C. with removal of water.
- acidic catalysts such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, acid anhydrides, acid-reacting metal oxides or acid-reacting hydrogen-containing salts such as sodium hydrogen sulfate
- the partially dehydrated castor oils are preferably obtained from castor oil using phosphorous acid in accordance with British Patent GB 671 368. NEN, preferably in the presence of 0.1 to 1 wt .-%, preferably from about 0.25 to 0.75 wt .-% phosphorous acid - based on castor oil - and at temperatures in the range of 230 to 260 ° C.
- the desired hydroxyl number of 90 to 150 mg KOH / g of the partially dehydrated castor oils can be adjusted on the one hand via the amounts of phosphorous acid used and above all via the reaction time.
- the reaction with phosphorous acid in the abovementioned amounts leads to partially dehydrated castor oils with hydroxyl numbers of the desired range with reaction times of about 30 minutes to 10 hours.
- the hydroxyl numbers are average hydroxyl numbers which were determined according to the DGF unit method CV 17a (1953) and whose unit is mg KOH / g.
- Partially dehydrated castor oils with hydroxyl numbers from 100 to 140, preferably from 110 to 130 mg KOH / g are preferred in the context of the invention.
- Partially dehydrated castor oils with hydroxyl numbers below 90 also have a lubricating effect, but are significantly worse; wear with these highly dehydrated castor oils is even worse than with natural castor oils.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils can be used both as a base oil and as an additive.
- the term "lubricant" in the sense of the invention includes both base oils and additives with lubricating properties.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils used according to the invention can be used with base oils known from the prior art, such as mineral oils, synthetic ester oils from dicarboxylic acids and alkanols or di- and monocarboxylic acids and alkanols, and also with natural esters such as triglycerides be used.
- base oils known from the prior art such as mineral oils, synthetic ester oils from dicarboxylic acids and alkanols or di- and monocarboxylic acids and alkanols, and also with natural esters such as triglycerides be used.
- the proportion of the partially dehydrated castor oils used according to the invention depends on the intended effect.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils are preferably used as the base oil in amounts of 50 to 100% by weight, based on the additive lubricant.
- the amounts used of the partially dehydrated castor oils are approximately in the range from 0.1 to 20% by weight, preferably 5 to 10% by weight, based on the additized lubricant.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils can be used alone or in combination with known lubricants in motor oil, gear oil, hydraulic and / or cooling lubricants.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils are particularly preferably used alone as base oil in motor oil fluids, preferably in racing motor oil fluids.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils with the specified hydroxyl ranges used according to the invention have extremely good lubrication properties and, above all, excellent wear characteristics (extremely pressure properties).
- the partially dehydrated castor oils show excellent viscosity / temperature behavior, which is also reflected in the pour points of approximately -20 to -40 ° C determined according to DIN ISO 3016.
- the partially dehydrated castor oils have a good adhesive effect with a sufficiently high viscosity.
- additives such as oxidation and corrosion inhibitors, dispersants, high-pressure additives, anti-foaming agents and metal deactivators can also be used in the usual effective amounts to improve the lubricating character.
- Table 1 shows the anti-wear properties at 600 and 450 N as well as the extreme pressure properties. It turns out that partially dehydrated castor oil with a hydroxyl number of 120 has a much better lubricating effect than technical castor oil and also as partially dehydrated castor oil with an OH number of 79. In addition, the welds, that is to say the extreme pressure properties of partially dehydrated castor oil with a hydroxyl number of 120 and 1900 N, are very much higher than in the compared technical castor oil.
