Abstract

Un matériau composite (22) renferme des gouttelettes (24) d'un matériau à cristaux liquides dispersés à l'intérieur d'une matrice (26) d'un polymère photopolymérisé. On prépare le matériau (22) en formant une solution du matériau à cristaux liquides et d'un monomère, puis en polymérisant le monomère avec de la lumière. La solubilité du matériau à cristaux liquides dans le polymère est moindre que dans le monomère. A mesure que la polymérisation progresse, une portion du matériau à cristaux liquides se sépare sous forme d'une seconde phase dans la matrice polymère (26). Le matériau à cristaux liquides peut être n'importe quel matériau approprié qui est soluble dans le monomère et moins soluble dans le polymère, et le monomère est un acrylate ou un méthacrylate polymérisables. On prépare des dispositifs à cristaux liquides en formant le matériau composite entre deux substrats électriquement conducteurs.
