Definitions

  • the object of this invention is to produce a chemical composition and method, which render the treated products containing cellulose fibres or similar permanently fire-resistant so that even frequent washing does not deteriorate their fire-resistance at least not to an essential degree.
  • Another important object is to introduce a method and an agent for the utilization of the waste liquor produced in the making of urea phosphate, while urea phosphate as such cannot be separated from the liquor. This will add to the economy of the manufacture to a considerable degree.
  • the object is further to develop a chemical composition that can be used for the fire-resistant treatment of a wide range of fibre products such as paper, cardboard, fibre boards, particle boards, etc.
  • the invention is characterized in that the blend of chemical substances contains at least the following effective components: 15 - 50 w.p. urea phosphate,
  • a blend corresponding to the main characteristic used in accordance with the invented method renders cellulose fibre products fire-resistant, which means that frequent washing does not essentially impair this property.
  • the invented method comprises mainly the dipping of a cellulose fibre product in the invent ed blend, whereafter the product is dried and roasted (condensed) in one or several phases at about 120 - 220 ⁇ C temperature.
  • the cellulose fibre product is treated in two phases.
  • a salt solution which contains the above-mentioned moisturizing agent, urea phosphate and ammonia, whereafter the product is dried and condensed at about 170 - 220°C.
  • the product is dipped in another solution containing the above-mentioned melamine resin or similar as well as PE-emulsion and diammonium phosphate.
  • the product is then dried and condensed, preferably at about 120 - 160 ⁇ C .
  • composition of the various invented blends shown in the following table (Table 1) varies in different proportions in order to find out the most favourable amount of each ingredient.
  • Lyofix CHN is the trade mark of a melamine resin product, which is sold in several slightly different derivats. The function of this substance in the invented blend is to improve the durability of the fire resistant properties to washing as well as to improve the tensile strength, shrink resistance and bending resistance of the product.
  • Melamine is the source of cyanamide, contributing to the formation of amidopolyphosphates. The quantity used is about 4 to 10 w.p. solid matter.
  • Polythene emulsion acts as a softener.
  • the quantity used is 1 to 4 w.p.
  • Diammonium phosphate acts as a catalyst contributing to the polymerization of melamine resin.
  • the quantity used is about 0.01 w.p.
  • compositions used in tests content, of each ingredient is given in grams per kilogram of trie blend
  • the samples were rinsed in water (40°C) four times, then dried, air-conditioned and weighed.
  • the LOI values oxygen index
  • FTA Flamraability Unit Equipment in accordance with standard ASTM 2863-70 in order to check the rendered fire resistance.
  • recipies 110IIa, 110IIb and. 110Ib can be considered equally efficient at this stage. Besides, recipy 10911b was good for a high LOI value.
  • recipies 110IIa, 110Ib, 109IIb are worth further testing.
  • the LOI values, 31.5 - 29.8 of printed cotton fabric treated in accordance with these recipies show good fire resistance, but the corresponding values of overall fabric, 25.8 - 25.0, were not fully satisfactory (about 26 - 27). The matter can probably be remedied by increasing the quantity of dipping and the share of protective agents in the fabric, or, by improving the absorbing properties of the fabric.
  • the finished fabrics were air-conditioned (24 hours, 20°C, 65 % RH) and their fire resistant and textile technical properties were measured. The rest of the fabrics were washed further including intermediate air-conditioning and the above-mentioned properties were measured after one, three, ten and twenty washes. The average hardness of the water used was 4°dH.
  • urea phosphate solution neutralized with ammonia can be used as a finishing .agent for rendering cellulose fibres fire resistant durable to washing (coloured laundry, household detergent).
  • the amount of fire resistant agent (ad-on) needed is 25 to 30 % depending on the weight of the fabric or material, LOI values are
  • the invented method of rendering cellulose fibres fire resistant can be applied in another way than by dipping the product in the solution.
  • the solution can be sprayed through nozzles or similar as well.
