UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD MITCHELL, OF WOODDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DESIGN FOR A BUSHWHACKER OR BRUSH-SCYTHE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 35,038, dated September 3, 1901.
Application filed June 5, 1901. Serial No. 63,313- Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooddale, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design fora Bushwhacker or Brush-Scythe, of which the following is a specification.
The leading features of the design reside in a hook-shaped cutting-blade of novel configuration, the entire body of which islocated in the same plane and comprises a shank having a bill at one end and a handle at the other. The shank tapers in thickness longitudinally from the handle toward its outer end and transversely from its rear to its front edge. On the other hand, it is broader at its outer end or connection with the bill than at its inner end or connection with the handle. The inner end of the bill is disposed in obtuseangular relation to the inner edge of the shank, the angle of intersection, however, being broken by a curved portion. The rear or outer edge of the bill curves uniformly and meets the rear or outer edge of the shank to form an enlarged head, and this portion of said shank is broader than the handled end. The handle is arranged in rear of the front or inner edge of the shank, wherebya shoulder is formed by the end of the latter, and said handle is furthermore provided at its opposite ends with annular bands or rings.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the bushwhacker or brush-scythe embodying the new design. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view through the shank.
By referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seenvthat the design resides in a hook-shaped cutting-blade, the entire body of which is located in the same plane and comprises a shank 10, having a bill 11 at one end and a handle 12 at the other. The shank tapers in thickness longitudinally from the handle to ward its outer end, as shown in Fig. 2, and transversely from its rear to its front edge, as illustrated in Fig. 3. On the other hand, its outer end or connection with the bill is broader than its inner end or connection with the handle. The inner edge 13 of the shank is disposed in obtuse-angular relation to the inner edge 14. of the bill, the angle of intersection, however, being broken by the curved portion 15. The outer or rear edge of the bill 17 curves uniformly and meets the rear or outer edge of the shank at 19, forming an enlarged head 20 and the outer and broader portion of said shank. The handle is arranged in rear of the front or inner edge of the shank, wherebya shoulder (designated 16) is formed by the end of the latter, and said handle is furthermore provided at its opposite ends with annular bands or rings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a bushwhacker or brushscythe as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD MITCHELL.
