UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SMITH, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE REED dz BARTON CORPORATION, OF SAME PLACE AND NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESlGN FOR.A HANDLE FOR SPOONS; FORKS, 0R SlMlLAR ARTICLES.
SIECIFIOATION forming part of Design No. 32,677, dated May 22, 1900.
Application filed April 4, 1900. Serial No. 11,534. rain of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Handles for Spoons, Forks, or Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
The figure is a front face view of my design for the handles of spoons, showing in dotted lines its application to forks.
The outline or marginal contour of the ban dle, as consisting of a broad end and a swelled projection near it tapering into a narrow shank to the bowl, is not claimed as presenting any novelty in itself.
The essential features of the design are to be found in the raised ornamentation in relief. This consists of a figure of a poppyflower spread upon the broad end of the handle and extending part the way down over the convex panel and having on one side a pondent unopened bud a. Marginal ornamentations of leaves a a extend along each side of the plain panel. On the swelled intermediate projection is displayed a poppy-flower G within a cluster of leaves. On the shank are stems and leaves and an inverted or bent-down poppy-bud b. A margin of leaves 0 extends partly around the upper and inner edge of the bowl.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a handle for spoons, forks, or similar articles substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH SMITH.
