UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. \VIENTGE, OF PROVIDENCE, RIIODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE IIOYVARD STERLING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A BACK PLATE FOR RACKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 23,389, dated June 19, 1894.
Application filed May 10, 1894. Serial No. 510,798. Term of patent 3% years.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. VVIENTGE, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and 5 produced a new and original Design for Back Plates for Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
The drawing represents a view of a back plate illustrating my new design.
The leading features of my new design for back plates for racks consist in the lower straight line, the side line inwardly inclined at the lower portions and following a succession of irregular curves at the upper portions, and the irregularly curving upper edge higher at the center than at the sides, together with surface ornamentation consisting of the plain lower portion, the inwardly-turned foliage o forming the side borders, the series of shelllike foliated scrolls, extending from the lower leaves of the side foliage, meeting in the central escutcheon and forming the upper border for the plain portion, the oppositely turned 5 scrolls connected at intervals with said border and with the upper leaves of the side foliage, the small inverted scrolls forming the upper corners and the central scrolls surmounted by the shell-like central ornament and con- ;o necting with the escutcheon.
In the drawing 2 represents the central plain surface having the lower edge 3 the ends of which curve into the inwardly-inclined side lines 4-4. From the upper per- ;5 tions of these lines the outline extends upward in a succession of inward and outward curves to the upper scrolled corner ornaments 5-5, thence inward and slightly upward in a series of larger curves to the central shell-like ornament 6. 4
The surface ornamentation consists of the plain panel 2 the lower bead following the line 3 and curving upward at the corners into the inwardly-branched foliage 7-7 the leaves 8-8 of which extend to and support the orna- 4; men ts 5-5 while the smallest leaves 9-9 overlap the edges of the plain portion 2. From the leaves 9-9 and those adjacent thereto extend the upward shell-like scrolls 10-10 connecting with the foliated-scrolls 11-11 5o having upperconvoluted edges between which is located the escutcheon 12. Extending from the scrolls 10-10are thefoliated-scrolls 13-13 which connect with the inner curves of the ornaments 5-5 and with the side foliage having the leaf-like ornaments 14-14 at their lower portions. To the upper ends of these scrolls 13-13 are connected the wings 15-15 of the central foliated scrolls 16-16 on which the ornament G is supported.
What I claim is- The design for back plates for racks as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES C. WIENTGE.
