Description

DESK.
Patented Mar. 19, 1889.
a 7 m M 1 1 FRANCIS A. ((H FIN, (l1 INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
DESIGN FOR A DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,964, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed January 24, 1889) Serial No. 297,441. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern..-
lle it known that I, FRANCIS A. (IUFFIN, of Indianapolis, county oflliariion, and State of Indiana, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for a Desk; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in which: like letters refer to like parts.
My invention consists in a new and original design fora desk having a flat top or cabinet-top, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawing the figu re represents a front view of my design.
In dctaihp are the pedestals of the desk, their corners rounded. These pedestalshave openings for drawers, and the parting-rails between these openings are ornamented with molding in, this molding having a rectangular bead or mold atrthe top and a projecting curved part below. 'lhcse moldings are carried across the face of the pedestal the width of the drawer and their ends rounded. On the outside rounded corners of the pedestals there is a curved shoulder formed in the molding, and on either side of the upper and at the bottom of the lower drawer this molding is carried on aboutithe corn er of the pedestal.
The drawer-fronts project beyond the face of the pedestals, and the molding upon the parting-rails also projects and thus forms this curved shoulder, and the ends 6 of the fronts of the drawers (1 are also rounded, presenting a soft and easy curve to the eye, and the molding being carried about the outer corner of the pedestal, as above described, gives it a peculiarly attractive and beautiful appear ance.
The drawerpulls correspond in outline with the molding of the pedestal, and the same molding is carried across the desk-front below the lowest drawer and about the edge of also rounded. The drawers, which are gcnen ally four in number, may be of different on of the same depths, but thisis immaterial, as the design would be the same without regard to the depth of the drawer:
The beauty of this design is most clearly brought out aboutithe. corners of the pedestats, where the gradual curves of the ends of the drawer-fronts, the rounded corners of the pedestal, and the curved outlines of the moldings between the drawers and upon the pedestals corresponding with those in thedrawen fronts all combine to make a harmonious and beautiful appearance and one that strongly attracts the eye of the observer.
The inner corners of the pedestals are also rounded, and the molding at the base, which is extended within between the pedestals, has the inward curve or shoulder formed by the projection of the molding beyond the face of the pedestal, as above described.
I claim as my design- A desk having pedestals with rounded corners, drawer-fronts projecting beyond the faceof the pedestals, having similar rounded ends, and moldings upon the parting-rails, substantially of the configuration described, similar moldings upon the edge of the table and the base of the pedestal, and curved shoulders formed at the junction of the molding upon the parting-rails on either side the upper and at the base of the lower drawer and the corners of the pedestal, substantially as shown and described.
It witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of Januar 1889.
FRANCIS A. GOFFIN.
