DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,613, dated September 18, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. CAPITAIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new Design for a Foot of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had therein to the accompanying typographical impressions.

My invention consists of a new design for a font of printingtypes, in which the outlines of the letters, numerals, points, and logotypes are irregularly curved and waved and the letters and numerals are irregular in size and shape, having an unfinished and ragged appearance, all as hereinafter fully described,and shown in the typographical impressions.

The beginning and terminal portions of the letters and numerals consist of irregular cl u msily-formed curves. The entire faces of the letters between the outlines are shaded by fine horizontallines placed closely together. The central portions of the top outlines of A, E, F, G, S, T, and Z are depressed, and the lower portion of A is inclined backward and extended slightly below the bottom of the front portion of the letter. The upper portions of the backs of B, D, P, R, U, V, b, h, m, n, and p are inclined upward and backward. The lower ends of the front portions of M and N, one form of C, and the lower-case c, e, h, k, and m are inclined obliquely forward and downward and extend slightly below the bottom lines of the other portions of these letters. The front portion of one form of n terminates in a heavy rounded end below the bottom of Serial No. 28l ,564.

The lower portions of one form of s, the lower-case X, y. and z, and the numerals 2, 3, 7, and 9 extend below the bottom line of the other letters and numerals, and the upper ends of the back portions of u and y and the front portions of v, w, and X extend above the top of the other portions of these letters. The lower portion of C is thinner, curved upward more, and extended forward farther in the logotype Co than in Oh. In the logotype Th the T differs in shape from the capital T, in which the toe of the base ex tends forward, and both the frontand back portions of the top extend equidistant from the stem and are curved downward, while in Th the toe of the base extends backward, and the front portion of the top is much longer and thinner than the back portion and is inclined slightly upward, extending back ofaud across the upper portion of h.

\Vhat I claim is The new design for a font of printing-type, in which the faces of the letters are shaded with fine horizontal lines, the outlines are irregularly curved and waved, the back and upper outlines are fine, and the front and lower outlines are heavy, and the letters and numerals are not uniform in size and shape, all as shown in the typographical impressions and as herein fully described.
