HARRY F. MITCHELL, OF VINCENNES, INDIANA.
WINDING DEVICE.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY F. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Winding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device for winding alce and similar material upon a card or the In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a winding device embodying the features of my invention and showing said device secured upon a counter. Fig. 2 is a section on dotted line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the clamps.
The embodiment selected for illustration comprises two card holders l and 2 which are herein illustrated as consisting of springactuated clamps adapted to grip the ends of the card or other device upon which material is to be wound. In this instance, the clamp l is fixed upon the end of a shaft 3 that is withdrawably mounted in a bearing 4. The bearing 4 may be fixed to a counter, table, shelf, or other support in any preferred way. The clamp 2 is slidable longitudinally of the shaft 3, in order that it may be withdrawn therefrom for a purpose to appear hereinafter.
The means for rotating the card holders l and 2 to wind material upon a card held by said holders consists, in this instance, of a crank handle 5 fixed to the card holder l.
In use, a card is secured in the clamps l and- 2 substantially as shown in Fig. l. One end of the material to be wound upon the card is attached to the card in any suitable way, and the card rotated by means of the crank handle 5. It will be seen that in the construction herein described, wherein the card lies at one side of the shaft 3, the

material when wound upon the card will inclose or be wound over the shaft 3. When it is desired to remove the card from the winder, the shaftI 3 is withdrawn from the bearing 4;, the clamp 2 released from the card and slid longitudinally oif the shaft- 3 and the clamp l operated to release the card, whereupon said card is slid off the shaft.
I desire to have it understood that the device herein illustrated is only one of vari-- ous possible embodiments of my invention, and that I do not limit myself to any of the details of construction shown and described.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a winding device, in combination, a shaft; means for securing one end of said shaft to a counter or similar support; a relatively wide springactuated clamp mounted transversely on said shaft adjacent said securing means; a similar spring-actuated clamp at the outer end of said shaft, said clamps being arranged to grip a card; and a handle fixed upon the second mentioned clamp said handle and clamp serving as a crank for rotating said clamp and the card held between them.
2. In a winding device, in combination, a bearing arranged to be secured to a counter or similar support; a shaft having one end rotatably and withdrawably mounted in said bearing; a relatively wide spring-actuated clamp mounted transversely on said shaft adjacent said bearing, and being .withdrawable off said end of the shaft, a similar spring-act-uated clamp fixed on said shaft at the outer end thereof, said clamps being adapted to grip opposite sides of a card; and means attached to said second mentioned clamp for rotating said clamps and shaft.
