DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND OUTTING PAPER. No. 284,105. Patented Aug. 28.1883.
ETEns Pmm-mhn n mr. Withingkm. n I:
rArns l arnn'r rricn WVILLIAM O. \VESTERFIELD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN H.
EARL AND EDWIN F. EARL, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE Fen HOLDlNG AND CUTTING PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,105, dated August 28 1883.
Application 110a April r1, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM O. Wns'rnn- FIELD, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Device for Holding and Cutting Paper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked there on, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of dc vices that are more especially intended for cutting wrapping-paper from continuousrolls, the exact construction and operation of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure l is a view in perspective of a de vice embodying my improved features, and Fig. 2 a view of the straight or cutting edge detached from the paper-holder.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bottom part of the paper-holding case or receptacle. a a are end pieces, having upper rounded ends; and B, the semicircular hinged top or cover, forming an inclosed case. The end part, a, is provided with a spindle, a earrying the disk a which is adapted to rotate therewith. This spindle supports one end of the roll of paper, while the opposite end has a suitable journal-bearing in the perforated end part, a. The dotted lines indicate the position of the roll of paper.
The cutting-ruler O is placed on the inside front edge of the bottom part A, the ends covering the elongated recesses b b, and is removably secured in this position by the screws 1) b", the beveled cutting-edge of the ruler being set a little back from the bottom part to which it is attached. The under side ends of the ruler are provided with the transverse cleats B B, which are of the required thickness to allow the loose end of the paper to pass between the facing surfaces of the ruler and the bottom part, A. The cutting-ruler is provided on the inner edge with the notch d,
. the part A having the corresponding notch, (1,
thus providing an opening for the insertion of the thumb and finger, so that the paper may be conveniently grasped at each operation.
In the recesses I) Z) it is designed to place an elastic block of-rubber or small springs, which shall have the effect of slightly raising the ruler 0 when the cover 13 is throw' back to insert a new roll of paper, so that t end of the new roll can be easily inserted under the cutting ruler. provided with a notch, d corresponding to similar notches in the other parts, for the purpose of allowing the loose end of the paper to be grasped with facility. WVhen the cover is turned down, it rests on the outer edge of the cutting-ruler and holds the end cleats down to a close contact with the surface of the bot-. tom A. The clasps (Z (1, attached to the edge of the cover, engage with the edge of the bottom A, and properly secure the parts with relation to each other.
One end of the spring D is rigidly secured to the inside of the covercase, the loose end being adapted to bear on the disk a when the cover is closed, acting as a brake, and preventing more paper from unwinding than is required at each time. By this arrangement the exact amount of paper required for each package is conveniently drawn forth from the case, and by an upward movement of the hand the same is cut from the roll by the edge of the ruler, this being accomplished with one hand, the cutting-ruler being held down by the edge of the cover bearing on the same.
The box or receptacle E, attached to one end of the apparatus, is intended to hold a ball of wrapping-twine, thus forming a convenient combination.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the bottom part, A, provided with the cut-out notch d, of the detachable cutting-ruler 0, provided with a corresponding notch, (l, and the hinged cover B, having a similar cut-out notch, ri and the clasps (F (1*, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the journaled spindle (6, adapted to support a roll of paper, of the disk to", the spring D, and the hinged cover 13, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Vitnesses:
L. B. OOUPLAND, JOHN H, EARL.
The cover B is also It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 284,105, granted August 28, 1 upon. the application of William O. \Vesterfield, of Chicago, Illinois for an imp] l ment in Devices for Holding and Cutting Paper, should have been issued to the William C. Westerficld and J 01m H. Earl and Edwin F. Earl, assignees of thIGGfOI interest in said invention; that the correction has been made in the files and re of the case in the Patent Offioe, and should be read in the grant to make it cor thereto.
Signed, countersigned and sealed this 25th day of September, A. D. 1883. [SEAL.] H. M. TELLER,
