NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I-IEMAN G. BARLOWV AND JOHN B. BAHLOVV, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
REMOVABLE BINDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,031, dated January 20, 1891.
Application filed May 17, 1890- Serial No. 352,164. (No model.)
To all who/rt it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HEMAN G. BARLOW and JOHN B. HARLOW, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids,
in the county of Kent and State of Michigan,
have invented a certain new and useful Removable Binding, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful removable binding designed to be used to bind sheets or pads of paper; and the object of our invention is to construct a binding adapted to hold sheets or leaves of paper in a secure and efiicient manner, and from which binding the user can readily remove a part or the whole of the sheets or leaves whenever it may be found convenient or desirable to do so. These objects e accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l is an end view of our invention, showing a part cut away in order to illustrate the bindingscrew and bindingsocket, which 2 5 are used for holding the sheets of paper in place. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the heads of the screws. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view showing the heads of the sockets.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through- V out the several views.
C represents the cover, which may be constructed of paper, wood, or any suitable material.
P shows the block of paper.
S represents a socket, which is provided with a screw-thread, into which the screw E fits and with which it engages. The head of the screw is shown by I), and maybe constructed in any ordinary manner.
S is the socket, and is provided, preferably, with a rectangular head or projection H, adapted to lie in close proximity to the shoulder on lower cover formed at J.
I shows the line where the covers open, and the screw'head lies in close proximity to this line. The object of forming the heads rectangular in shape is to prevent the sockets from turning. The shoulders on the lower cover serve the double purpose of preventing the socket from turning, and also the shoulder being thicker than the head of the socket it keeps the socket from resting on and marring the desk or table supporting the book. This form of the socket-head, however, may be varied, provided the sockethead is of such shape as to prevent it from revolving as the screw is being inserted.
The cover C C may have an outer cover of paper, leather, or cloth.
In using our invention such number of leaves or sheets of paperare first used as may be required, and then they can be singly removed, or the user may remove such part of them as he may desire, or he may remove the whole, and when he has used all the sheets contained in the binding others can be inserted in their place. This form of binding makes a solid and compact form of book, which can be enlarged or diminished in size by means of the screwand socket. The socket, extending a considerable distance into the pad or block of paper, allows forconsiderable variation in the size of the book, and also allows the user, when a portion of the leaves are removed, to still have a complete book closely and securely bound together.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a removable binding, the combination of two covers 0 C, said covers being connected together by a flexible back, the top or front cover provided with a hinge, as I, the lower or back cover being without hinges, a block composed of leaves or sheets of paper, a socket provided with a head adapted to rest against the shoulder formed in the lower cover, and a screw adapted to pass through the top cover and engage with said socket, and thereby to bind a bundle of paper in sheets or leaves of great-er or less size or thickness, as may be required, substantially as described.
2. In a removable binding, the combination of the covers, as O O, the top or front cover hinged at a point near to the binding device, the lower cover being rigid, a socket having a head, as H, adapted to rest in close proximity to the shoulder upon the lower cover, and provided also with an internal screwthread, and a screw adapted to go thlOUgh the our hands and seals in the presence of two top cover and to fit into and engage with said witnesses. socket, whereby the binding can be adapted to bind a greater or less number of sheets or I 5 leaves of paper and to allow for the removal of a part or the Whole of the same, substan- Witnesses:
tially as and for the purpose described. EDW'ARD TAGGART,
In Witness whereof we have hereunto set ARTHUR C. DENISON.
