Be it known that we, WILLIAM SCOTT and JOHN W. HOLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county oi Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have inventedanew and useful Box-Cover, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in detachable covers for boxes or shelving.

The object of the invention is to provide a cover for boxes or shelves whereby the contents of the same may be readily displayed and withdrawn therefrom without the necessity of removing the cover.

To these ends the invention consists substantially in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully illustrated, described, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box having the hereindescribed cover applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cover removed. Fig. 3.. is an end view showing a modication of the means for securing the cover tothe box. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the cover, showing a modification of the catch for retaining the rolling curtain in extended position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the manner in which the metallic binding-strip is secured to the curtain.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.

\ Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the frame of a cover formed of any suitable inaterial and comprising side pieces 2, having their ends mortised to transverse pieces 3. The inner edges of the side pieces 2 are provided with grooves 4, and at one end of such side pieces a transparent panel 5, prefer` ably of glass, is inserted in the grooves 4, such panel being retained at the end of the side pieces 2 by means of a cross-piece 6, the ends of which are fitted within the grooves 4.

At the free outer end of the frame 1, oppo site to the transparent panel 5, is arranged a spring-actuated roller 7, the ends of such roller being journaled in bearing-blocks 8, secured to the under side of the frame 1 and adapted to project on the outside of the box to which the cover is applied, a closure-strip S connecting the outer end of the blocks 8 and together with the latter forming a casing for the roller 7. The bearing-blocks may be formed of any suitable material and at one of their ends are provided with pointed studs 9, adapted to enter one end of the box to which the cover is applied and assist in retaining the same upon such box. At the opposite end of the frame 1 the same is provided with a thumb-screw or its equivalent 10, which enters the end of the box and together with the studs 9 holds the frame securely on the same.

It will be noted that the ends of the side pieces 2 immediately adjacent to the roller 7 are cut away, such cut-away portion permitting the roller to freely rotate in its journals and also enabling the end of a curtain 11 which is secured to the roller 7 to easily enter the grooves 4 and slide therein. This curtain may be formed of leather, oil-cloth, or like materials. The end of the curtain 11 which is secured to the roller 7 is formed into a-loop 12, which is adapted to receive the roller 7 and provide a substantial connection between the same and the curtain. The other end of the curtain 11 is secured within a metallic binding-strip 13. This strip 13 may be formed of any desired metal, and in order to securely hold the same upon the curtain 11 one edge 14 of the strip is bent over and the end of the curtain turned under such edge 14,

the latter being pressed upon the same. At a point intermediate the tu rned-over edge 14 and the other edge of the strip another bend is made, which causes the remainder of the strip to be folded upon `the edge 14. This remaining portion is also pressed upon the curtain and, as is obvious, prevents the curtain becoming detached from. the strip.

A knob 15 passes through the strip 13 and has rigidly mounted thereon a spring-pressed hook 16, adapted to enter a recess 17 in the cross-piece 6 and engage with apin 18 therein, thereby holding the curtain 11 in extended position against the tension of the roller 7.

In Fig. 3 we have illustrated a modiiied form of the means for holding one end of the cover upon the box. This consists of a V- shaped frame 19, preferably formed of wire, the ends of such frame provided with loops 2O and its apex forming an eye 21. For securing the cover upon the box with this modified form screws or their equivalents 221 pass through the loops 2O and the eye 21 and into IOO the end of the cover and the box, thereby firmly holding the same together.

I/Ve have also shown a modication in Fig. 4 of the catch for retaining the curtain 11 in extended position. This consists of a springplate 23, secured to the strip 13 by the knob 15, such plate 23 being provided with an offset 24, adapted to place one end 25 of the plate 23 in a plane corresponding to the upper side of the cross-piece 6. The end 25 is slightly curved in order to permit the same riding over a securing-stud 26, which stud projects from the outer side of the cross-piece 6 and passes through an opening 27 in the end 25, thereby holding the plate 23 in a locked position and preventing the curtain 11 Winding upon the roller 7.

The operation and application of our improved cover will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. To apply the same to a box, the studs 9 are forced into one end of such box and the thumb-screw passed into the other end. The hook 1G is then caused to engage with the pin 18 Within the recess 17. This will hold the curtain 11 in an extended position and effectually close the box. By reason of the transparent panel 5 the contents thereof will be displayed, and if itis desired to remove such contents the hook 16 is released from engagement with the pin 18, when the spring-actuated roller 7 will Wind the'curtain 11 thereon, thus permitting free access to the box.

While the invention hasbeen describedy as applied to a box, it will be apparent that the same may be used in connection With shelving and for similar purposes. actuated roller 7 may be arranged as shown in the drawings,v or, if desired, the same may be placed, together with the transparent panel 5, longitudinally of theframe and at either the upper or under sides of the same. It will alsoy be evident that any other suitable means for securing the cover to the box or shelf may be substituted for those illustrated. By reason of the loop 12 in the curtain 11 receiving the roller 7 the curtain is securely held to such roller, and When said curtain is in extended position it will be prevented fromsagging.

Having thus described our invention, what We claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a detachable cover of the class described, the combination of the frame having a transparent panel at one end, and means at such end for securing it to the top of a box or shelf, said coverhaving at its opposite end a pendent casing or bearing portion adapted to project over the outer edge of the box or shelf when such top or cover is placed thereon, a roller journaled Withinl such casing, a curtain connected thereto having means at its free end for holding it to its extended position, said casing or bearing portion having means whereby it can be secured to the outer edge of the box, as specified.

The springsaid roller, a closure-strip connecting theouter ends of the bearing-blocks and together with the latter forming a casing for the roller, and means for securing the cover to the box or shelf, substantially as set forth.

3. In a detachable cover of the class described, the combination of a frame comprising side pieces having their inner edges grooved and connected at their ends by transverse pieces, a transparent panel secured between the side pieces of the frame, a springactuated roller journ-aled in the frame opposite to the transparent panel, a flexible curtain mounted on such roller and provided at one of its ends with a metallic binding-strip, and a spring-plate secured to such strip and provided with an openin g adapted to receive a pin for holding the curtain in extended position to close a box or shelf when the cover is placed thereon, substantially as set forth.

4. In a detachable cover of the class described, the combination of a frame provided at one end With a pendent casing or bearing portion adapted to project over the outer edge of a box or shelf when such cover is placed thereon, a roller journaled Within such casing, and a curtain connected thereto and having means at its free end for holding it in its extended position, substantially asdescribed.

5. In a detach-able cover of the cl-ass described, the combination of a frame comprising side pieces having their inner edges V grooved and connected at their ends by transverse pieces, a transparent panel secured between the side pieces at one end of the frame,

a cross-piece for holding the panel in said end, a spring-actuated roller journaled in a casing formed at the free outer end of the frame, a flexible curtain secured to said roller and .adapted to slide in the grooves of the side piecesof the frame, and a spring-plate seythereby hold the curtain in extended position to close a box or shelf when the same is placed thereon, substantially as set forth.
