PARCEL-STRAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,657, dated March 24, 1891.

Be it known that I, FRED II. LOvELEsS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana., have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Parcel-Straps, of which the following is a specification.

My said invention relates to an improved construction of that class of straps designed particularly for use in carrying parcels, the invention consisting essentiallyin the means provided for holding and operating the straps which surround the parcels, whereby they may be quickly and conveniently rolled up or drawn tightly around said parcels, and securely and conveniently fastened in the position desired, as willbehereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts,Figurc l is a perspective view of a par cel-strap embodying my said invention, and Fig. 2 an end elevation thereof.

In said drawings, the portion marked A represents the frame of the handle; B, the straps, and C a shaft or roller journaled in said frame, to which said straps are attached.

In general form and arrangementv the dcvice shown is not materially different from that of any similar articles in common use, the frame consisting of a bent metallic strap, having a lower and upper bar, with a space between them sufficient to accommodate the straps when rolled upon the roller or shaft, and provided with a convenient form of handle, as the upper bar thereof, which may be a separate piece, as shown in the drawings, or formed of metal in piece with the other part of the frame, as will be readily understood.

The straps B are ordinary straps, such as are in common use in this class of articles, being double and attached at one end to the roller or shaft C, the other end of the loop passing down through a slot provided in each end of the lower bar of the frame A for the purpose.

The shaft or roller C extends from end to end of the frame, and is journaled at each end in suitable bearings formed in the end pieces thereof, one end of each loop being attached thereto near each end, just within the frame. One end of said shaft is extended a short distance beyond the end of said frame and formed into a crank, as shown, and a projecting point c is formed thereon to extend in toward the end of said frame, being preferably opposite the part bent out to form the handle of the crank, as shown. A series of perforations a are provided in the end of the frame A in line with said point c, and the said shaft is mounted to slide longitudi nally in its bearings for a short distance. A groove or notch c may be formed around said point c, which when said point isslid into one of the perforations a, as will be presently described, will engage with the edge of the metal around said perforation and prevent the point from accidentally sliding out of engagement therewith.

The operation of this invention is as follows: The straps being placed around the parcel which it is desired to carry, the shaft C is rotated by means of the crank on its outer end until said straps are drawn to the desired tension and the point c is then brought to register with the nearest perforation a, when the shaft is slid longitudinally until said point is inserted therein, which securely locks the straps and holds them in the desired position until released. When it is desired to remove the strap from the parcel, the shaft C is slid-longitudinally to disengage the point c, when the straps become loosened by pulling on the handle or unwinding them by means of the crank, as will be readily understood. The parcel being removed and it being desired to wind up the straps, the operation is quickly effected by rotating the shaft by means of the crank thereon. Then tightly wound,they are held secure by inserting the point c in one of the perforaticns a, as above described.

IIaving thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
