This invention has reference to apparatus for winding yarns on cards and has for its object to provide a simple and convenient means whereby predetermined lengths ofv yarn, such as silk, articial silk, wool and other yarns, which are required in small quantities can be wound.
Apparatus for winding predetermined lengths of yarn on cards according to this invention comprises a plate, adapted to carry a card, mounted on a shaft rotated through gearing by the operator, the gearing being rotated by a handle, the apparatus having a lever izo-operating with a counting wheel to indicate when the predetermined number of turns made by the handle and hence the number of windings on the card is complete, the yarn being drawn from cheeses, pirns or the like and led through eyes and round drag rods to exert a tension on the yarn.
The invention is more particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein- Fig. 1 is an end elevation of an apparatus made` according to the invention;

The apparatus as shown in the drawings has a base 4 on which the cheeses, pirns or other packages 5 for the yarn can be stood when the apparatus is in use. These packages 5 are conveniently placed on pins 6 to keep them in place while the yarn is being drawn 01T and to reduce the width of the base 4, the yarn packages may be staggered, or arranged in rows from front to back. Above the yarn packages 5 are cross members I on supports 8 the cross members l having eyes 9 through which the yarn is led till it passes through eyes I on a cross member I! vertically adjustable in supports l2 and secured by nuts and bolts I3.
In front the apparatus which comprises the actual winding gear has two end plates iii and I5 at one end with a plate Iii at the other end, and in the plates I5 and I6 are holes II in which are mounted drag rods i8 at the back and drag rods I9 at the iront, under which the yarn 2!! is passed, the rods can be mounted in any pair of holes I'I opposite to one another in the plates I5 and I 6 and by this means tension or drag can be applied to the yarn and to this end the rods may be covered with felt or the like.
Above the rod I9 at the front is a further rod 2| having on its eyes 22 through which the yarn passes to the top edge of a card 23 on which the yarn is wound. This card 23 is held on to a metal plate 24 by a spring clip 25 and the plate 2 itself is clamped firmly at its other end in a clamp 26, provided with a slot into which ts the other end of the card 23 so that it is held flat and iirm.
The clamp 26 is mounted on, and rotates with, a shaft 2'I mounted in bearings in the plates I@ and I5 and having a pinion 28 on it engaged and driven by spur wheel 29 on a shaft 3Q and compounded with a pinion 3| on the same shaft 3l! which pinion 3l is driven by a spur wheel 32 on a shaft 33 rotated by a handle 3d, The spur wheel 32 has on the inside-see Fig. 2-a counting wheel in the form of a flange 35 with a gap 36 and mounted pivotally between the plates Mi and I5 is a finger lever 3l urged down by a spring 33 and provided with a projection 39 which will engage the gap 3B in the flange 35 and hold the whole mechanism against rotation when so dolng.
If, however, the finger lever 3l be pressed down, thus lifting the projection 39 out of the gap, as when starting the machine, the handle can be turned thus setting the whole gearing into motion, but stopping it again if the iinger lever has been released, as and when the gap 36 comes round again under the projection 39. In this way and by allowing the end 3S) of the lever to rest on the flange 35, the number of turns of yarn on the card 23 for each rotation of the ange is automatically regulated or counted and the whole apparatus is held still while the iilled cards are detached, the yarn leading to the card being of course cut and while the new card is mounted in place and the free ends resulting from the cutting are xed to the new card.
As a rule when the apparatus is once set it will be used for long periods without alteration, but should it be desired to put a greater or shorter length of yarn on the card, this can be arranged by'removing the spur wheel 29 and pinion 28, the shaft on which they run being easily removable and putting in a new combination of gears to give for each rotation of the flange 35 the required number of turns to the shaft 2l and hence the card 23. In this manner, for each rotation of the handle, there may be, according to the gearing employed, any number of rotations of the card, thus, if the card be say six inches wide, such rotation of the card will wind on one foot of yarn and if the gearing be 10 to l, one turn of the handle will wind on ten feet of yarn and in this manner, the length of yarn wound on the card is checked and counted.
In this way, by means on the counting wheel the quantity of yarn wound round each section Q4 of the card from each strand or end of yarn is regulated and controlled and all the operator has to do is to turn the handle until further movement is arrested by the counting Wheel being held.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Apparatus for winding a plurality of equal lengths of thread side by side on a at card comprising a base, vertical pins on said base, for supporting packages of thread, vertical supports for guide and tension rods for the threads, adjustable guide and tension rods mounted in said Vertical supports, guide eyes on sai-d supports spaced apart at xed distances, vertical support,- ing plates for the Winding mechanism, said Winding mechanism comprising a spindle, securing means at one end of said spindle for a rectangular plate, a rectangular plate mounted in the centre of one end on said securing means, the centre line of said plate being axially aligned with said spindle, said securing means having a slot ior receiving one end 0i a nat card tirloimtedl on Said plate, securing means at the other end. for, de,- tachably holding said flat card on said plate, a pinion on said spindle a gear Wheel meshing with said pinion, a pinion compounded with said gear wheel and both mounted on a detachable spindle, a gear wheel in mesh with said compounded pinion, manually operable means for rotating said last gear Wheel, a flange on said gear wheel, said ange having a gap therein, and a Spring actuated strip resting on said flange and engaging said gap at each rotation movement until manually released.
