which is supported on uprights 88 by stud 9. A fiange10 is provided With sleeve 11 and issupported on stud 9 against the face of gear 7. The pin 12secured to gear 7 goes through a hole 13 in flange 10 thus connecting this gear and flange 10 so that they turn in unison. On the"sleeve 11 is supported the controlling cam 14 secured by screw 15. To the flange 10 is also secured pin 16 which in conjunction with pin 12 serves to actuate the automatic stop as will be hereinafter described. The controlling camM is'provided with an upward and downward series of stops as shown in 17 of Fig. 1, These are for the purpose of controlling the movements of the tape guides as will be hereinafter described. The card holder 4 is composed of a bracket 18 secured to the left hand end of shaft 3. o bracket 18 issecured the plate 19 With the large V out out portion. On this stud are secured the levers 25-26, lever 26 being provided with a V shaped tooth 26 at its extreme end which bears on the con- 'trollingjcam :14. These slides can be set position on the tension bars 32. Connecting the levers 25 and 30 is a link comf two parts 35 and 35". 35 has a slot 36 and "35 has screw 37 which connects them adjustabl together, part 35 being secured to lever 25 'y screw 38 and part 35 to lever 30 by screw 39. Secured in an eyelet 40 formed on bracket 28 is a spring 41 the other alt any end of which is secured to lever 25 with a rivet 42 which serves to keep the V shaped point of lever 26 against the controlling cam as shown in Fig. 1. Secured near the right hand end of shaft 3 are two belt pulleys 43-44, pulley 43 belllf, fastened to shaft 8 and pulley 44 running loose on the shaft 3; these together constituting what is known as tight and loose pulleys, loose pulley 44 bein held in place by collar 45. Outside of tEe pulleys is a standard 46 secured to the table 1 with a hole near the top to receive and support the end of shaft 3. Supported on the table 1, is a Lracket 47, to which is secured a lever 48 by bolt and nut 49 and 50. When lever 48 is perpendicular it will be opposite the pulleys 43 and 44. Lever 48 has an extension 51 which projects half way toward the shaft 3 on the outside of pulley 43. Secured to the outside of pul ley 43 is a stud 52. Secured to lever 48 are two arms 5354 which serve to guide the belt to the pulleys 4344 and also serve to shift the belt from the tight to the loose pulley when the automatic stop is actuated as w1ll be hereinafter explained. Secured to lever 48 is a stud 55 which acts as a lock to hold lever 48 in position when the belt is running on the tight wheel. Secured to :the lever 48 and the upright 8 is a spring 56 which draws the lever 48 toward the left when the automatic stop is released. Secured to an upright 57 on standard 2 with a bolt and nut 5859 is a lever 60 which has an offset 61 which brings end 62 of lever 60 in line and against lever 48. On end 62 of lever 60 are secured two pins 6364 between which lever 48 mov s and which limit its movement both right and left. Near end of part 62 on lever 60 is a recess 65 into which stud 55 sets when the lever 48 is moved toward the right, this holds lever 48 in line with ti ht wheel 43 and holds it there until releas by the automatic stop. Secured to levers 26 and 60 is spring 66 which keeps lever 60 up against the stud 55 -.nd in line with pins 12 and 16. Secured in an extension 8 of the rear upright 8 is a gear 67 which meshes with s iral ar 6. .iear 67 is supported on sl-a t 67' ournaIed in extension 8. On the,upper side of extension 8 is secured a dial plate 68. Secured to the shaft 67 upon which gear 67 is supported is a hand 69 which revolves with gear 67 when the machine is In operation. On tne dial 68 are figures showing the number of revolutions the machine makes.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows:-One or more cards 4 are inserted in the card holder 4. The binding 4 is put through the guides under and over the rods 32 as shown in Fig. 5. The ends of the binding 4" are then placed under one of the spring arms 20 and between it and the card. The lever 48 is then pushed toward the right so that the belt guiding fingers 53 and 54 are in line with the tight wheel 43-. When in this position the recess 65 in part 62 of lever 60 will catch stud 55 and hold lever 48 in position, the wheel 43 is then operated which turns the shaft on which the spiral gear 6 is, turnin the gear 7 to which the controlling cam 4 is connected. The rotation of the cam 14 moves the lever 26 up which moves the guidin lever 30 through lever 25 and links 35 an 35 to distribute the binding 4" on the card. Each section of the cam changes the position of the distributer one space on the card. In the cam shown there are seven spaces up and seven s aces down, this will lay seven lays of the inding 4" on the card in going 8 one way and seven going back. If more or less lays are to be laid on the card the cam should have more or less spaces. It is also necessary for some lays to change the size of gear so as to give more or less revolution to the card holder. When the machine has made half the number of revolutions that the gear and cam are set for the pin 12 or 16 as the case may be striking against the lever 60 pushes it down, this releases the recess 65 from the stud 55 on lever 48, and allows lever 48 to move under the action of thespring 56 toward the left, this carrying the belt from the tight to the loose pulley and permitting the stud 52 to strike" against extension of 51 of lever 48 and thereby stopping the rotation of the shaft at the same ositlon ever time the belt is shifted. hile the car 5 are being wound the hand is moving around the dial and when the' machine has stopped the dial shows how many revolutions have been made. The arrangement of the er and controlling cam is such that the binding 4' lays in even folds on one side of the card as shown in Fig. 1 and cross from one lay to the next one on the opposite side of the card as shown in Fig. 2. If more than one series of la s are desired lever 48 is moved to right an the operation repeated as many times as desired. If the binding 4 to be wound is wider or narrower the position of the link 35 is to be moved up or down on the levers 25 and 30, this changes the throw of the binding distributor so that the binding will alwa s be laid on the card in even folds one against the other. I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction shown and described as various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure as Letters Patent is:
1. In a winding machine the combination with a card holder, ofa distributing device, means comprising a rotary element provided with a series of steps or actuating surfaces of varying radial distance for actuating the -varying radial distance for intermittently actuating said distributing device, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a. winding machine the combination with a card holder, of a distributing device, means comprising a rotary element provided with a series of steps or actuating surfaces of varying radial distance for intermittently actuating said distributing device after a predetermined number of revolutions of the card holder, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a winding machine the combination with a card holder, of a distributing device, means com rising a rotary element provided with a dou' 1e series of ste s for actuating said distributing device a ter a predetermined number of revolutions of the card holder in two wa s, for the purpose of la ing a series of f0 ds on the card from right to left and from left to right substantia 1y as shown and described.
5. In a winding machine the combination with a card holder, of a distributing device means comprising a rotary element provided with a double series of ste said distributing device a mined number of revolutions of the card holder, an automatic stop and means carried by said rotary element for actuating said' stop, substantially as shown and described.

In a tape winding machine, a card holder, a tape distributing device, means for moving the tape distributer after a predetermined number of revolutions of the card holder, a double action cam provided with a series of steps, an automatic stop controlled by the movement ofthe cam, and a dial for registering the revolutions substantially as shown and described.
7. In windin mechanism, the combination with a lover or actuating the distributor, of a wheel provided with circumferential surfaces of varying radial distance.
8. In winding mechanism, the combination with a lever for actuati the distributer, of a wheel provided with circumferential surfaces arranged in series of varying radial distance.
9. In winding mechanism, the combination with a lever for actuating the distributer of a wheel provided with series of circu erential surfaces of progressively inmasing and decreasin radial distance.
