GEORGE HOLLANDSWORTH, OF KNOX, INDIANA.
PORTABLE REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Application filed May 11, 1910. Serial No. 560,674.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE HoLLANDs- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knox, county of Starke, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Reels, of which the following is a specification.
Mfy invention relates to a portable reel or roll holder designed especially for employment in supporting rolls of linoleum, paper, carpet, or the like in such a manner that the same may be readily and easily uncoiled.
The object of my invention is the provision of a device of the character mentioned especially adapted for use by retailers of the substances above enumerated, and which will be of simple and economical construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lith these objects in view my invention consists in a portable reel characterized asabove mentioned and in certain det-ails of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portable reel embodying the preferred form of my invention, Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on line cc-m of Fig. 1, a roll being shown-in dotted lines arranged thereon, Fig. 4 is a section of one of the collars included in the device, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the locking members provided to lock the device in position.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 1 designate vertically disposed supporting brackets which are spaced apart and disposed substantially parallel. The base portions 2 of said brackets are flared and are mounted upon suitable casters 3 whereby ready movement of the device along the surface upon which it is resting is made possible. rThe upper end portions of the brackets 1 are formed to constitute tubular bearings 4 for the respective extremities of the elongated cylindrical shaft 5, the latter being preferably tubular or simply an ordinary pipe. Said shaft is secured against longitudinal movement in the bearings 4 by means of snugly fitting collars 6 and the collar-forming portion '7 of a crank handle 8, said collars and collarforming portion being locked in position upon said shaft by means of set-screws 9 which pass through enlargements or bosses 10 provided thereon. Provided in the inner of said collars 6 are transversely extending recesses 11 registering with the set-screws .9 threaded in said collars. Said recesses 11 are provided for the reception of one end portion of rectangular members 12 which are so mounted that their inwardly projecting free end portions may engage the lateral edges of the inner end portion of the strip coiled upon the shaft 5 to lock the same to the latter; it being clear that by means of the set-screws 9 said members 12 may be forced into clamping engagement with the edges of the strip positioned thereunder.
Arranged upon the low.er transversely eX- tending bar portion of each of the brackets 1, the same being loosely secured thereto by means of a set-screw 13 is a bar 14. The upper ends of each of the members 14 is provided with T-slots 15 which are engaged by the set-screws 13. Said members are of such length that with the upper ends of the slots 15 engaged by the screws 13, the lower ends of the same may engage the surface upon which the device is arranged in an obliquely disposed position, as shown. The lower ends of said members are double edged, as indicated, so as to adapt the same to pierce the surface engaged thereby, to thus lock the device against movement. By providing said members with slots of the shape shown and with two points or edges 16 at their lower ends, provision is made whereby said members may be positioned to prevent movement of the device in either direction. When not in use the members 14 may be held in elevated or inoperative position by said screws.'
Vith a device of a construction as set forth a reel of portable and economical construction is provided and one which will be adapted to etfectually serve the purpose for which it is designed.
Vhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my reel, 1 do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts described without departing :troni the spirit of the invention coinprehended within the scope of the appended claiins.
Having described lny invention what I claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described comprising spaced brackets; a shaft journaled in said brackets; ineans for rotating said shaft; collars on said shaft provided with recesses therein; set-screws in said collars and entering saidl recesses; and bars having their outer ends in said recesses and contacting with said shaft, substantially as described.
2, A portable reel comprising a pair of spaced brackets, said brackets being mounted upon casters; a shaft having its respective ends rotatably mounted in said brackets; a bar having its lower end double-edged to engage the surface upon which the device is arranged to lock the saine against movenient in either direction thereon, the said bar being provided with a T-shaped slot in its upper portion; and a screw taking through said slot and into one of said brackets, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed lny name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
