EDlVAPtD ROBARDS, OF STILESVILLE, INDIANA.
CUTTER FOR ClGAR-WRAPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,477, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed March 26, 1897. Serial No. 629,353- (No model.)
To all 1/7107, it nt/zy (mt/crib:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ROBARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stilesville, in the county of Marion and State of Indian a, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutters for Cigarrappers, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of cuters in which a circular or disk cutting-blade s used; and it consists in an adjustable frame supporting a cutting-disk anda guidewheel and in the several parts and combination of parts thereof, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
My object is to provide an instrument of this class that shall be capable of cutting leaf-tobacco without risk of tearing or damaging the leaf, forcigar-wrappers, which may be adjusted so that wrappers of any desired width may be gaged thereby.
A further object is to provide such a device as shall be adapted for cutting various other articlessuch as leather, fabrics, &c.- with or without requiring the gage; and a still further object is to provide means in a cutter of this description whereby the disk is constantly guided in an upright position, whereby the cutting edge will longer remain sharp than when allowed to tilt over in use.
I attain these objects in my invention, which is furthermore simple, is cheaply constructed, and is durable and economical in use.
eferring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of my device; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a horizontal central sectional view, and Fig. at a detail. view.
In constructing my invention I employ such material as may be best suited for use in the several parts. I make a horizontal combined axle and gage consisting of a tubular member 13 and cylindrical member 0, the latter being adapted to fit movably inside the tubular member. A frame composed of arms D and F, having clamping ends (Z and e, is
secured in a handle A, by which the apparatus is carried and operated. The clamp (Z clasps the member B and is provided with abinding-screw Z), while the clamp c clasps the member G and is provided with a like binding-screw 0, preferably thumb-screws;
The outer end 7c" of the member B has a plug Z secured therein, which has a protruding journaled end 9, the extreme end of which is screw-threaded, and to which is fitted a nut f, so arranged as to permitthe movement of the guide-wheel F, which is journaled on the plug. The guide-wheel may have either a smooth or milled periphery. At the end an of the member C is journaled the cutting wheel or disk G, which is suitably retained by the nutt' on the threaded end h. The cutting edge a of the disk maybe beveled at either one or both sides, as desired, or a perforating-wheel may be suitably employed for the purpose of making perforated pouncepatterns, the whole apparatus being adaptable for such uses. The end u of the tubular member B is provided with external screwthreads on a slightly-tapering surface. The end of the tube has a slot a cut into one side of it to permit of contraction of its diameter. A milled binding-nut ILhavin g screw-threads s, is adapted to fit over the'tapered threaded portion of the tube, and when screwed upward onto the tapering portion the tension increases and contracts the tube to bind upon the inclosed member 0.
The body of the member 0 may be solid or hollow and is laid off and properly marked by suitable characters, as I J, to form an inden or gage, so that when the end 9' is inserted into the tubular member B and the figure 2 registers with the end a it would indicate that the distance between the guidewheel F and the cutting-wheel G is two inches and would therefore cut a strip of that width from a guide line or edge of the article being cut. The gage may suitably be arranged with other designations. It will be understood that the axle may be adjusted to any length within its limit and also in its relation to its frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- ent, is-
1. A cutterof the character described comprising a handle and frame secured thereto, an extensible aXle adjustable in said frame, a gage on said axle, a guide-wheel journaled on one end of said axle, a cutting wheel or diskjournaled on the opposite end of said aXle, and means whereby said axle may be secured at any desired point of adjustment, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of the handle, the frame having the clamping ends, the axle composed of the hollow member and the adjustable member therein having the gage on the outer surface thereof, the clamping-nut by which said two parts are secured together, and the wheels on said axle, substantially as shown and described.
In a cutter for cigar-wrappers and other articles, the combination of the axle composed of the tubular member having a guidewheel journaled at its outer end and a clamping-nut atits inner end and the adjustable member fitting into said tubular member and having the cuttingwheel journaled at its outer end and the gage on the body thereof,
the frame adjustably attached to said axle,
and the handle on said frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
