Be it known that we, ETTA N. McKELvEY and IRA E. EELLs, citizens of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Skirt Trimmers and Markers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention aims to provide in a single device, means for trimming and marking ladies and misses skirts so that they may be of a uniform length or extend to a uniform distance from the floor or other surface when the wearer is standing erect.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accom anying drawings.

Whi e the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail v1 ew in elevation of the crayon holder. Fig. 3 1s a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a verticalsection on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

The device comprises companion standards 1 and 2 having an approximate parallel relation and spaced apart, the standard 2 be ing preferably longeLthan the standard 1 and both standards being provided with scale graduations in .inches and fractional parts of an inch so that the requ red distance of the mark, or cut above the floor, or other surface, may be readily determined.

The standards 1 and 2 are spaced apart at their upper ends and are connected near their lower ends by means of a cross piece 3, the same being a part of the same bar, or stri from which the standards are formed, sai bar, or strip, being bent upon itself so as to form the standards and the connectin cross piece. A foot 4 is provided at one en of the cross piece 3 by means of a fold in the bar or strip, said foot acting in conjunction with the supporting wheels 5 to hold the device in upright position. A bar 6 is connected intermediate of its ends to the lower portion of the standard 2 and extends at a right angle to the cross piece 3 and is provided at its ends with supporting wheels .5. The bar 6 is composed of two members between which the standard 2 and supporting wheels 5 are lacedu The supporting wheels 5 are toothed to insure their rotation and to prevent skidding when moving the device upon the floor or surface when either marking or trimming a skirt.

A combined shears and crayon holder is mounted upon the standard 2 and is adjustable thereon to any height and is adapted to be secured in any adjusted position. This holder comprises a clip 7, a set screw 8, a standard 9, clamp bars 10 and 11 and spring actuated grippers 12, the same being pivoted at 13 to a plate 14 which is mounted upon a pin or stu 15 projected laterally from the standard 9.

The clip 7 does not completely encircle the parts to which it is fitted and which are secured thereby to the standard 2, since the intermediate portion of its rear side is cut away so as to provide retaining flanges 16, hence the clip is adapted to be formed from a length of sheet metal bent upon itself into rectangular shape, substantially as shown. The set screw 8 is threaded into an opening formed in the side of the clip opposite to that formed by the flanges 16. The clamp members 10 and 11 are of similar formation, each being provided at its upper end with an outer extension forming a jaw and between which jaws, the point of a pair of shears is adapted to be secured. The jaw 17 of the member 10 inclines outwardly and downwardly, whereas the jaw 18 of the clamp member 11 inclines outwardly and upwardly. The clamp members are relatively adjustable so, as to vary the distance between the jaws 17 and 18 according to the size of the shears, or scissors to be retained in place during the trimming operation. The clamp members 10 and 11 are secured in an adjusted position by the set screw 8 which also serves to secure the holder upon the standard 2 in the required position.

The crayon holder is adapted to swing from side to side upon the stud, or pin 15, thereby permitting the marking without moving the entire machine from the base. The arms of the grippers 12 are provided at ent so as to adapt themselves to the size of the crayon and grip the same with sufficient l niness to prevent displacement. The grippers 12 are pressediogether by means of justably mounted upon the standard, a pair of relatively movable clamping members carried by the clip, the said clamping members carrying companion jaws for engaging a pair of scissors,- and a set screw locking the clip in position and also engaging the clampsprings 21 which exert an inward pressure I ing members.

4. In combination, a standard, a clip adthereon and which also serve grippers in a predetermined position. The springs 21 are secured at their upper ends to the pin, or stud'15, and their lower ends pressed inwardly against studs 22 projected laterally from the arms of the grippers 12.

To use the device for marking a skirt, the standard 1 is placed beneath the skirt to admlt of the latter coming between said stand ard and the crayon, and upon moving the device upon the floor, or other surface, and about the person, a mark is traced upon the skirt at the required distance above the floor, or surface, the distance being readily determined by the scale graduations upon elther one, or both of the standards as may be found convenient. For trimming a skirt, the point of one of the blades of a pair of shears, or scissors, is passed between the jaws 17 and 18 of the shears holder and both standards 1 and 2 are passed beneath the skirt with the blades of the shears, or scissors, upon opposite sides of the skirt. Upon moving the device 'as herein indicated, and at the same'time operating the shears, or scissors, the skirt will be trimmed, or cut,so that the lower edge will maintain a uniform istance from the floor, orsurface- Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In combination, a standard, a clip adjustably mounted upon the standard, means carried by the clip for clamping .a pair of shears, and means also carried by the clip for holding a piece of chalk.

2. In combination, a standard, a clip ad-v justably mounted upon the'standard, and a pair of slidable clamping memberscarried by the clip,=-the-said clamping members being formed with companion jawsfor engaging a pair of scissors.
