SKIRT-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Application filed June 30, 1910. Serial No. 569,766.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE Z. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventi6n,'such as will enable others skilled in' the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to improvements-in skirt markers. r One object of the invention is to provide a marker by means of which a skirt may be accurately measured and marked by the person making the same without assistance.
Another object is to provide a skirt marker by means of which the position for lacing trimming may be accurately indicated? \Vith these and other objects -in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of partsas will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skirt marker constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
In the illustrated embodiment of'theinventiou. I provide a base member 1 which is preferably in the form of a fiat rectangular plate constructed of any suitable material 5 and in any suitable size. base member 1 is asupporting standard 2 which maybe formed of wood, metal or any suitable material but which. is preferably in the form of a tube and is constructed in separable sections havinga screw threaded or other form of detachable connection whereby said sections may be readily taken apart for packing and storing purposes. The lower endof the standard is also preferably detachably engaged with the base 1 in any suitable manner. v g
The standard 2 is preferably provided with a scale of measurement and has adjustably engaged therewith a chalk holder 3 0 which is preferably in the form of a plate bent to form right angular parallel flanges 4 in one end of which are formed alined apertures adapted to receive the standard 2. Ar
ranged between the ends of the said flan esand provided with alined openings is ac ip 5 through which the standard is also inserted using the marker.
Fastened to the and in the ends of which is arranged a set screw 6 adapted to bear against the standard to secure the chalk holder in any desired position thereon. Pivotally mounted between the opposite ends of the flanges t are spring chalk holding jaws 7 through which is inserted a clamping bolt 8 having a nut 9 mounted on its upper end and having its lower end formed into a hook 10 adapted to bear against the under side of the lower jaw and engage an opening therein asclearly shown in Fig. 2. .The bolt will thus be held against rotation so that the nut may be easily turned home against theupper jaw ,to cause the jaws to firmly clamp and hold the pieceof chalk or other-marking material. It will also be noted on reference to Fig. 2 that-the inner ends ofthe jaws are cupped or pro, jected outwardly around their pivotal connection with the main body 3 of the holder so as to have a strong frictional engagement therewith and consequently be held steadil at any angle to which they may be adjuste To enhance the efiiciency of this frictionalengagement, the jaws are held against collapsing by a plate 12 connecting the same near the pivot.
In the use of my invention the chalk holder is adjustedat any suitable position 35 on the standard. The marker is then placed in position against the skirt which has been previously put on by the operator or person- A chalk mark is now made at a number of points around the skirt with the chalk held in the position to which it has been adjusted, said marks thus being in the same horizontal plane around the skirt. After the skirt has thus been marked,
it is removed from the person and laid on a table or other fiat surface after which the marker is laid on the skirt with the base-{h engaging the chalk line marked on the skirt after which the chalk holder nisadjusted to the length or to the distance above the ground 9 that it is desired the skirt should hang, 1
and, keeping the'base on. the chalk line, a
second'line is drawn around the lower portion of the skirt thus indicating the'posi-x tion for the lower end of the skirt" or the point at which the hem is to be formed? It will thus be seen, that by the use of my improved marker a skirt may be accurately measured andmarked by the person making the same.
From the fore oing description taken in connection with t e accompanying drawings,
the construction and epelataizm of the in ventien will be reediiy understood Without requiring a more extended explenatien.
Various changes in the form, prepertizm and the minor details of construct-ion may bereserted to Witheut departing from the principle 01 sacrificing any of the advanteges etf this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invent-ion, Whai, I claim is:
The eombinatien of a standard, :1 when; holder body secured thereto, chalk 3101(1- emeee jaws pivoted in the said. bmi f, a bolt inserted through said jaws and having its 5 messes.
