To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUST SEELING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sherodsville, in the county of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to skirt gages and markers, and the principal object of the same is to provide a gage and marker that may be detachably fastened to the edge of a table, stand, bench, step or the like so that a skirt may be accurately marked, said gage and marker being provided with a novel marker supporting arm which is formed of flexible material and which is pivotally connected to the device, thereby providing an arm that may be rocked to various positions and materially facilitates the marking of a skirt.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved skirt gage and marker. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the practical application of the gage and marker. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view showing the chalk carrier and its supporting arm.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the im proved skirt gage and marker comprises a clamp the body 1 of which is provided with relatively spaced laterally projecting jaws 2-3, one of which is provided with an adjustable clamping screw 4 by means of which the clamp may be fastened .to an overhanging edge of a stand 5, as shown in Fig. 2. Said body 1 is cut away on one longitudinal surface to provide a seat 5 for one end of a vertical standard 6. Said standard is riveted or otherwise rigidly fastened to said body. The angular base 7 of body 1 has its free end bifurcated to provide pivot ears 8 between which one end of a marker supporting arm 9 is pivoted. Said arm is flat and formed of thin flexible material, and adjacent its connection with ears 8, is twisted, as indicated at 10 so that the major portion of said arm will present a flat surface to standard 6. Said arm is, provided with graduations designating inches and fractions thereof.

A chalk holder is adjustably mounted on arm 9, said holder comprising a body 11 which is provided with a central slot 12 through which arm 9 passes, and with a threaded transverse opening 13 which intersects slot 12 and in which a set screw 14 is mounted for locking said body to said arm. Atits inner end, said body is reduced and provided with a reentrant slot 15 that extends the entire width of said body, and in which the chalk holding arms 16 are mounted. Said arms are preferably formed of a single length of thin resilient material bent to provide said arms 16 which are arranged in spaced parallel relation and the connecting portion 17 which is of the same length as slot 15 and into which said connecting portion is fitted.

In use, the improved marker and gage is clamped to the edge of a table or stand, and the skirt placed over standard 6. The

chalk holder is adjusted to the desired point on arm 9, and the skirt slowly turned while the chalk holder is in cont-act therewith, thereby marking the skirt. It will be seen, that the standard 6 being on the inside of the skirt provides a firm backing so that a clear and distinct mark may be placed on the outer surface of the skirt, and also that the hinged connection between arm 9 and the base of the clamp, together with the flexibility of the arm 9, which is materially increased by its twisted portion 10, provides means whereby various movements of said arm relative to said standard may be had.

A skirt gage and marker standard, a clamp for detachably connecting the same to a support, said clamp provided with pivot cars, a flat flexible arm pivotally connected to said ears, said arm provided with a twisted portion so that it will present a fiat surface to said standard, and marking means adjustably carried by said arm.
