Illlillly lIT. DEITZ, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE srecive Toon Application filed May 2,
To all whom t may concern-f Be it known that I, FRANKIN. Dnrrz, a citizen of t-he United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and yuseful Improvements in Adjustable Spacing Tools, of which I hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description, suoli as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved device or instrument for rulingla .multiple number of parallel lines or for marking a number of spaced positions upon a plane or curvedsurface, either circumferentially or longitudinally thereof, the positions being equally spaced apart.
It also provides means for adjustably supporting a multiple number of marking instruments such as graving points, pens, or pencils, in such a manner that the position of any one point can be changed rela-- tively to the positions of the other points and variations in the spacing of the points can therefore be readily obtained.
The instrument is adapted for the use of carpenters, joiners, cabinet makers and draftsmen of all trades, where the spacing of lines on materials for joining or overlapping, or the spacing of openings can be accurately determined without taking repeated measurements.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. l is a plan of the device, adapted to operate upon a fiat surface, Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device adapted to operate upon a curved surface, Figure 3 is an end elevation thereof, Figure 4 is a transverse section of one of the pivotal joints, Figure 5 is an enlarged plan thereof and Fig. 6 is a perspective showing the mode of attaching the scale member.
In these views A represents a graduated strip or scale formed of flexible material so that rit will bend readily.
B, B, are bars slidingly and longitudinally movableuponsaid scale, and extend upon one side thereof at right angles thereto.
C, C,are pencil or pen holders which are pivotally mounted upon the aforesaid bars 1921. Serial No. 466,120.
D, D, and are provided with clamps E ady justable at F, F, in which the drawing or marking tools are held.
The holders C are also longitudinally movable of the bars, this adjustment being` permitted by means of slots G, G, therein, and clamping screws D, D, which permit also of turning the tool holders from one. side to the other, and permit horizontal movement in all directions, whereas the pivot at F, permits Vof vertical adjustment only. y
The bars B, B, are made in two telescoping-portions, the portion B sliding in the portion B.
These bars are connected together by means of pairs of crossed links Irl, II, pivoted attheir ends to the respective portions B and B of the bars, and the bars in each pair are -pivoted together by clamping screws I, I, secured in spaced openings J, J, in the bars.
By means of this construction all the bars can be moved together and a uniform distance will be preserved between the bars, thus permitting the device to be employed for drawing lines uniformly spaced apart.
To permit the bars to move longitudinally of the scale, and to be connected bythe crossed links, the outer ends B of the bars must move longitudinally inthe other portions, thus preserving the rigidity of the device.
The links are preferably countersunk or provided with marginal recesses K, K, around'the openings J, J, and corresponding projections I, I,'upon the adjacent link, which fit together.
A thin washer M prevents interference when the links are moved over. each other. This adjustability of the bars and their connecting links, and the flexibility of the scale member permits the same to be bent into any desired arc or curve, regular or otherwise.` `and when properly adjusted to required -shape the clamping screws I secure the parts in place.
When the tool holders C are in alignment with the bars B, the spaces between the points of the tools will be uniform, but when the holders are swung to one side of the bars or the other, the spaces will be varied in width as desired.
As shown in Fig. 6, the flexible scale A, is shown secured in its bracket by cutting out a tongue A, from the vertical face A2,
and folding it behind the scale, thus having an opening A3, through which the scale can be read.
A set screw A4, can be employed to pre- `vent the scale member from slidingin its braclret in one of the bars. This will not prevent the other bars from moving in 'their respective brackets. s
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a device for spacing and ruling par allel lines, the combination with an elon gated scale member, of spaced bars slidably movable thereon, crossed links pivoted together in pairs, and adjust-ably connecting,` said bars and adapted to retainthe saine in parallel relation 'to each other, and drafting means adjustably secured to said bars adjacent to said scale member.
2. lin a device for spacing and ruling pan allel lines, the combination with a flexible scale member, of a multiple number or bars longitudinally slidable thereon, vertically and horizontally adjustable draftingmeans mounted upon ,each bar, pairs ol crossed links, the links 1n each pair pivoted together Lesaeae intermediate of their ends, said links ad. justably connecting said bars, and adapted to retain them in parallel relation to each other. the connectingmeans Yfor the outer extremities oi? said links being` longitudinally movable in said bars.
in a device tor spacing and ruling parallel lines, the combination with a flexible elongated scale member, of transverselyv placed bars, said bars slidablj/v mounted upon said scale member, drafting means adjustavbly secured to said bars adjacent to said scale member, and crossed pairs of links connecting` said bars, each pair connecting adjacent bars, the outer extremities oi said links longitudinally mffivable or said bars, said links provided with spaced pivotal openings, and pivot pins adapted to be placed in turn in said pivotal openings to permit or' iiexing said scale to conform to any desired curvature.
'n testinwnyY wher-ooit, l hereunto set my hand this 23rd (lay of March, 1921.
