To all whom may concern Be it known that EMMA NABER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leigh, in the county of Colfax and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to skirt markers for tailors and dressmakers use in which an adjustable marker is adapted to be guided around the lower part of a vertically positioned skirt parallel with the floor for obtaining a quick, accurate and more convenient method for determining the length of skirts.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character wherein the measuring bars or uprights are foldable, thereby permitting of the same being easily and readily folded in compact form to occupy a small amount of space in the storage or transportation of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, durable in use and well adapted for the purposes intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes the measuring device or marker as its entirety, comprising a substantially rectangular base 6 having formed contiguous with one of the transverse edges thereof and bent upon the base for the greater portion of its length and in spaced relation therewith a platform 7. By the spacing of the platform from the base, is provided a skirt receiving space 8, that is to say, when the skirt 9 is of such length as to engage with the floor, the eXtra length of skirt is inserted in the space 8, during the act of determining or measuring the length of the skirt. The base 6 is provided at a point adjacent the free transverse edge thereof and at a point in advance of the free terminal of the platform with a transverse elongated slot 10, the purpose of which is to allow of the adjustment or folding of the upright or measuring bar 11. To this end, a pair of L-shaped ears 12 are securely fastened to the base to opposite sides of the slot thereof and have pivotally connected therebetween through the medium of the pin 13 the upright or measuring bar 11, defining the lower end thereof slightly above and in alinement with a slot 10 of the base. Ears 14 of similar configuration as the ears l2 are securely fastened to the free edge of the platform 7 and to opposite sides of the slot 15 formed therein, for pivotally connecting therebetween by means of a pin 16, a second upright or measuring bar 17. In view of the manner above described of connecting the measuring bars 11 and 17 to the respective base and platform, pivotally connects the same thereto and adapting the bars to be swung to oneside of a vertical plane, if the occasion so demands, and further permits of the measuring bars being folded into compact form during the storage or transportation of the measuring device. Further, these measuring devices when in active position, are disposed in a spaced vertical plane to one another, presenting therebetween a space for receiving the vertical length of the skirt. These measuring bars have their outer faces graduated in inches or fractions thereof and divided in any other suitable scale, as designated by the character 18. Owing to the fact that both the bars 11 and 17 are pivotally connected in vertical alinement with the respective slots 10 and 15 at a point slightly above said slots, allows the terminals of the said bars to clear the respective members 6 and7 of the device, and thus allows of a pivotal or folding movement of said bars.
The character 19 denotes a marker comprising a bracket 20 formed at one end with a U-shaped clamp 21 having its limbs formed with guide slots 22 adapted to receive the upright or measuring bar 11 for mounting the frame 19 thereon for various vertical adjustments. Threadedly connected in the connecting portion of the U-shaped clamp is a thumb screw 23 adapted to retain the marker in its various adjusted positions after the same has been regulated to agree with the desired length of the skirt. A crayon holder 24lhas its cylindrical plunger 25 slidably mounted in the opening 26 of the bracket for horizontal sliding movement. The free end of the plunger is formed with a circular operating disk 27 having abutting with the inner face thereof one end of a coiled spring 28, while the opposite end of said spring contacts with the confronting face of the bracket arm and tends to exert an outward pressure on the crayon holder at all times. Detachably connected to the inner end of the plunger 25 is a spring socket 29 adapted for holding the crayon 30. This socket is of substantially circular contourand is provided with a pair of alining openings 3l adapted to register with the opening 32 of the plunger, for the reception of a cotter pin or the like fastener, thus serving to detachablyv connect the socket with the free extremity of the plunger. This socket is fur-ther slitted to provide the same with resilient clamping jaws 83.
From'the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and| While I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is, merel illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims ap-l pended thereto.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a base, a platform formed continuous with one end of the base and bent toward the latter in spaced relation thereto for the greater portion of its length, a pair of ears secured adjacent the free terminal of the base, a vmeasuring bar pivotally mounted between said ears for movement in a plane at right kangles with respect to the plane of the base, a second pair of ears secured adjacent the free terminal Vof the platform, and a second measuring bar pivotally mounted between the latter mentioned pairs of ears for vertical swinging movement in spaced parallel relation with respect to the first mentioned bar.
2. A'device of the class described embodying a base having an opening formed adjacent one of the transverse edges thereof, a platform formed continuous with the opposite transverse edge of the base and bent toward and in spaced relation with said base for the greater portion of its length and having an opening formed therein adjacent its free transverse edge, a pair of ears seared to said base at opposite sides of its opening, a measuring bar pivotally mounted between said ears and slightly above and in vertical alinement with the opening of the base, a second pair of ears secured to said platform at opposite sides of the opening formed therein, a second measuring bar arranged in spaced parallelism with the former mentioned bar and pivotally secured between the second mentioned ears and slightly above the opening'- formed in said platform, said first and second mentioned bars being adapted to swing in a plane at right angles with respect to the planes of the respective base and platform. 3. A device of the class described embodying a base and a platform, a measuring bar secured to said base, a second measuring bar secured to the plattform, and a marking device adjustably mounted upon the first mentioned measuring bar, said marking device comprising a bracket formed at one end with a U-shaped guide clamp, aA fastening member carried by the clamp for holding the lmarking device in adjusted position upon the measuring bar, a spring pressed plunger mounted in the bracket for horizontal sliding movement, and a resilient socket detachably connected to the free end of the plunger and adapted for holding a stick of crayon.
