1 This invention :relates to devices generally termed garment markers andemployedby tailors, dress-makers, fitters -and'the like, .as ameasuring apparatus for locating the position for marking the bottom portion :of .a garment such as a dress, coat or the likepwhile the wearer or person being fitted, is standing :inan uptight position. The main purpose of this inventionpis to provide acompact, rigid, :simple, and attrac tive garment marker, which may-Jbeemployed with readyiacilityinmarking .lengths of gar- -ments. -Inpne of its more specificiaspects it is particularly useful in marking the .lengthrof gar- -ments of various 1 thicknesses, such as skirts,
dresses, cloth coats,:fur coats,:.-andthe like.
This application is a continuance, inrpart, of my copending application 568,433, filedNovember 14, 1944, which is now abandoned. Other objects and advantages of the invention-will be readily apparent'from the following description" Fig. '5' is a crosssect-ional'view taken on -line 5-5 of Fi 2.

As shown in the drawing; thenovel measuring device comprises a base). which maybe composed of any desirable material. such as wood, An elongated lfiat supporting standard H is integral with a relatively short flat plate 52 which is located on the upper face of said base it) at the front end thereof. The plate i2 may be secured to the base It by welding, rivets, or any other convenient manner to maintain the standard ll in rigid upright position and at an angle of 90 to the base it. The standard H has an elongated guide and support slot i3 between the ends thereof. The upper part of the standard H is struck out to provide a pair of guide and retaining ears M, the major portion of which are spaced outwardly from the rear face of the standard H, and the free extremities of which are spaced from each other. Guided by the standard I l and supported thereby is an elongated substantial U-shaped rigid :element approximately the same throughout most of its .ness.-.of. leg 18. .central. slot .27 therein. A boltzfi extends through .an opening in the plate"'25 and through the slot .21. .A nut..29, carrying a, finger pin 30 makes 2 l5. The width of the element I5 is length.

.Theoperation of; the devlceis as follows: 'The movable. frame I 5 is located in its lowermostposiv.tionwith the,crosspiecethereof, resting on the base It, and the device is ready for use. The height of the garment line from the floor is determined and the frame 15, is slid upwardly to proper position on the guide standard H, with the nut 2'0, being in loosened condition, and with the pivoted plate 2'2, and associated parts being swung about pivot 23, to its outward position away from leg I3, so that there is an unobstructed space between the legs i6 and it. Then the wing nut 23 is tightened to lock the frame to standard H. The skirt is inserted in the space between the legs is and i8 and the pivoted assembly is swung over on axis 23, as shown in Fig. 2. With garments of thin material the recessed end of plate 25, is used and the finger pin 30, is pressed to turn nut 28, to lock the guide 25 to support 22. As the assembly is swung around axes 23, the outer end of plate 23 engages the garment along the platform guide 25. Then the plate assembly is swung away from the garment, the entire device, or the wearer, is moved, the plate assembly is swung back and garment marked again. The guide plate 25, may be slid to any desired location so as to provide the requisite space between its free or marking end, and the leg 18. It also may be swung around to provide a straight edge with no recess and this end is used generally, in the marking of thick cloths or furs.
While this invention has been described in detail, it is not to be limited thereby, because the same is subject to various changes and modifications within its scope.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a base, a standard mounted on and extending vertically upwardly from the base, a generally U shaped frame slidable vertically along the standard, said frame comprising a front leg adjacent the standard and a rear leg spaced from and substantially parallel to the front leg, said rear leg being longer than and extending beyond the top level of said front leg, means for clamping the front leg to the standard to maintain the frame in preselected vertical position with respect to the standard, a marker support pivotally connected to said front leg about a horizontal axis at the upper end thereof, and means for maintaining the support in a substantially horizontal position intermediate the legs, said support being swingable upwardly only about its pivotal connection with said front leg, the length of said standard being less than the length of said rear leg and the length of said front leg.

A device of the class described comprising a base, a standard mounted on and extending vertically upwardly from the base, a frame slidable vertically along the standard, said frame comprising a front leg adjacent the standard and a rear leg spaced from the front leg, means for clamping the front leg to the standard to maintain the frame in preselected vertical position with respect to the standard, a marker support pivotally connected to said front leg about a horizontal axis, and means for maintaining the support in a substantially horizontal position intermediate the legs, said last mentioned means comprising a member carried by and extending below the support and bearing against the front leg, said support being swingable upwardly only about its pivotal connection with said front leg.

A device of the class described comprising a base, a standard mounted on and extending vertically upwardly from the base, a frame slidable vertically along the standard, said frame comprising a front leg adjacent the standard and a rear leg spaced from the front leg, means for clamping the front leg to the standard to maintain the frame in preselected vertical position with respect to the standard, a marker support pivotally connected to said front leg about a horizontal axis, means for maintaining the support in a substantially horizontal position intermediate the legs, said support being swingable upwardly only about its pivotal connection with said front leg, a marker guide carried by the support, said guide being pivotal and slidable with respect to the support, and means for maintaining the guide in preselected position with respect to the support.
4. A device of the class described comprising a base, a standard mounted on and extending vertically upwardly from the base, said standard having an elongated vertical slot, a frame slidable vertically along the standard, said frame comprising a front leg adjacent the standard and a rear leg spaced from and substantially parallel to the front leg, means extending through the slot for clamping the front leg to the standard to maintain the frame in preselected vertical position with respect to the standard, a marker support pivotally connected to the front leg about a horizontal axis, means for maintaining the support in a substantially horizontal position intermediate the legs, said last mentioned means comprising a member carried by and extending below the support and bearing against the front leg, said support being swingable upwardly only about its pivotal connection with said front leg, a marker guide carried by the support, said guide being pivotal and slidable with respect to the support, and means for maintaining the guide in preselected position with respect to the support.
