SCRIBER Filed sept. 24, 1945` www D w Patented Apr. 18, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCRIBER Frank W. Heide, San Francisco, Calif. Application September 24, 1943, Serial No. 503,707
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a scriber formetal Workers and primarily adapted for use by ship tters for marking ship plates to a determined or selected size so that when cut and fitted in place, welding thereof may be easily and quickly carried out with the use of welding material kept to a minimum amount and eliminates the employment of a ller or dutchman.
With these and other objects in View as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a scriber constructed in accordance with my in- Vention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation illustrating the device.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View illustrating the connection between the feed stem and holder of the marking element.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the holder.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the frame of the device and which is of a construction that will permit easy and convenient handling of the device. The frame is of substantially U shape, providing parallel portions 6 and 1 and a connecting portion 8 joining said parallel portions. The parallel portions and connecting portion are preferably of integral construction and the parallel portion 8 has a slot 9 extending the full length thereof and arranged on opposite sides of the slot are scale markings I0.`
Mounted for sliding movement between the parallel portions 6 and 'I is a holder II for a marking element I2. A feed stem i3 is journaled to the holder and threaded in an opening provided in the connecting portion 8. A finger piece I4 is provided on the feed stem to permit a person to readily grip and rotate the feed stem in either direction for adjusting the position of the holder within the frame 5. A coil spring I5 surrounds the feed stem I3 and bears upon the connecting portion 8 of the frame and the holder II.
lThe holder II is preferably constructed of channel stock so that the marking element I2 may be slid therein from either end with a portion of the marker projecting sufficiently far from the holder as to extend through the slot 9 for contact with a ship plate or other object for marking to a selected size or measurement. It is preferable that the marking element I2 have a sharpened or beveled marking end, as clearly shown in Figure 4. The marking element may be made of soapstone or any other material suitable for the purpose.
Whenever it is desired to mark a plate to a determined size or measurement, the plate is rested on a support having an even surface and the holder Il is adjusted along the scale markings It of the frame 5 by rotating the feed stem in the proper direction. With the ends of the parallel portions of the frame resting on the support, the frame is moved relative to the plate so that the marking element will produce a line indicating where the plate should be cut so as to take on the size or shape determined.
In ship building or repairing, plates must be cut to a size to t a damaged space and to assist the ship litter in cutting the plate the present invention is employed in the manner heretofore described in marking the plate so that when cut on the marking it will have the size or shape to fit within the damaged space so that on being welded in its place only a minimum amount of welding material will be needed and eliminates the use of fillers or dutchmen to close spaces which would occur if the plate were not cut the proper size. While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a scriber, a substantially U-shaped frame including parallel portions and a connecting portion and one lof said parallel portions having a slot with scale markings arranged adjacent thereto, a holder slidable between the parallel portions of the frame, a marking element carried by the holder and protruding through the slot, a feed stern journaled to the holder and threaded in the connecting portion of the frame and provided with a nger piece exteriorly of the frame for the adjustment of the holder in the frame.
2. In a scriber, a substantially U shaped frame including parallel portions and a connecting portion and one of said parallel portions having a slot with scale markings arranged adjacent thereto, a holder slidable between the parallel portions of the frame, a marking element carried by the holder and protruding through the slot, a feed stem journaled to the holder and threaded in the connecting portion of the frame and provided with a finger piece exteriorly of the frame for the adjustment of the holder in the frame, a coil spring mounted on the stem and bearing on the connecting portion of the frame and the holder.
