1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in marker gauges and particularly to such gauges as are used in marking the points where tiling, such as wall tile, base, cap or similar products are to be cut.
In accordance with the present invention a gauge of the character specified can be cheaply and economically provided, and in actual practice will facilitate the marking of tile to be cut and measureably decrease the loss attendant to inaccurately marking tile and the like.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a top plan view of the gauge and illustrating an application of the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the gauge,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the base plate of the gauge.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that in accordance with the present invention the preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a substantially rectangular base plate 5 of metal or other suitable material that adjacent opposite longitudinal edges is provided with anges 6 and l, flange G being relatively wide and serving in addition to a guide flange in cooperation with the guide 7 as a handle means to facilitate handling of the gauge.
Also adjacent the ange-equipped edges thereof plate 5 is provided with scales 8 that are graduated in terms of inches and fractions thereof as shown.
Adjacent one end edge thereof plate 5 has suitably secured thereto through the medium of nuts E combination guide and fastening bolts I5. Mounted on the plate 5 for sliding movement relative thereto between the flanges 6 and I is a rectangular slide plate II that is provided adjacent opposite longitudinal edges thereof with elongated slots I2 that receives the bolts III.
Through the medium of the nuts 9 and a downturned portion I3 at one end edge of the plate I I the latter is held in spaced relation to the plate 5 as shown in Figure 3 to facilitate sliding movement of the plate I I to the desired position of adjustment.
Plate I I is adapted to have the edge l3nt thereof act as an index to be read against the scales 8 for positioning the plate II at the desired position of adjustment.
Plate II is held at the desired position of adjustment through the medium of wing nuts I4 threaded on the bolts I0. Interposed between 1938, Serial No. 203,431
the nuts I4 and the plate I I are washers I5 as shown.
Also to facilitate shifting of the slide II to the desired position of adjustment the latter has struck out therefrom a handle piece I6.
Plate II is also provided adjacent the opposite longitudinal edges thereof with flanges Il and i8, flange II having sliding contact with flange i and flange I8 having sliding contact with flange Flange I8 is also relatively wide and serves as an auxiliary handle means to facilitate the adjustment of the plate II.
At the edge I9 thereof which serves as a marking edge plate II is reinforced by a strip 2!) riveted or otherwise secured to the plate as at 2|.
The manner of using the device will be clear from a study of Figures l and 3 wherein it will be seen that the plate 5 has the edge 22 thereof placed in abutting contact with one edge of the tile to be cut and the plate EI secured at the desired position of adjustment on the plate 5 has its edge I9 overlying the tile 23 and serves as a marking edge for guiding a pencil or the like used to describe a line on the tile 23 to be used as a guide in cutting the tile.
It will be seen that the distance between the edge Z6 of plate 5 and edge I3a of slide II can be regulated for cutting a tile of exactly the proper or desired width.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility, manner of operation, and advantages of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is: L
A tile gauge comprising a substantially rectangular shaped base plate having a straight edge .at one end thereof to be brought into engagement with a wall of a tile and provided with scale markings adjacent opposite edges thereof, upstanding flanges formed on the latter-named edges of the base plate, a slide plate disposed over the base plate and adjustable relative thereto to extend over the tile and provide a straight ruling edge for guiding a marker over the tile 45 with the opposite edge thereof coacting with the scale markings, a depending lip atone edge of the slide plate and resting on the base plate, said slide plate having spaced slots, bolts carried by the base plate and extending through the slots for adjustably securing the plates together, and spacers on the bolts and engaging the under face of the slide plate to coact with the lip in supporting the slide plate on the base plate for sliding movement relative tothe latter and in spaced relation thereto.
