Figure 11 is a plan View of the scriber with square employing a pair of adjustably spaced pins for cutting .or scribing various widths of feature strips of linoleum.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved linoleum scriber having an elongated body generally denoted by the reference numeral I, and being tapered at its forward end to provide the pointed head 2, through which the spaced openings 3 and 4 are formed for respectively receiving the scriber pin 5 and the cutter blade 5, the same being securely held in place by means of the set screws 1 and '8, respectively.
The body I of the scriber is formed with a longitudinally extending slot 9, which terminates at its inner end with the rounded aperture ID, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. A supporting basell will b secured transversely to and below the inner end of said body I, to hold the same in spaced relation from the upper surface of the linoleum when the same is being scribed or out.
Oppositely disposed guide surfaces will be provided in the under surface of the body I of the scriber, and will serve to guide the block I3 which supports the forwardly extending flexible arm 14, said arm being formed with a longitudinal slot [5 and provided with an integrally formed depending V-shaped guide foot IS on its forward extremity. The longitudinally adjustable block with the V-shape guide foot is supported for longitudinal adjustment along the slot I5 by means of the set screw I! which is provided with the enlarged knurled head it, which may be moved through the said rounded aperture II) when the block is being removed from the scriber body.
In Figure 1 of the drawings, the scriber body I is shown with the scribing needle 5 in the forward opening 3 in position to under scribe a piece of linoleum (not shown) when inserted between the lower surface of the scriber body I and the upper surface of the flexible arm I l. The scriber may be pulled along the edge of the linoleum to mark the same so that it may be cut to 'form aflush joint with an adjacent piece of linoleum.
In Figure 3 of the drawings, there is illustrated a vertical sectional view through the improved ball locking scriber needle, said needle being indicated by the reference numeral l9 and being vertically supported through the externally threaded supporting member 20 formed with the laterally extending head 2| on its lower end. A guide member 22 being formed with a central aperture is adapted to support the supporting member 20 with the head 2| in contact with its under surface, and to be secured thereto by means of the threaded nut 23. The locking nut 24 is adapted to be threaded upon the upper end of the externally threaded supporting member 20 and to be formed with an internal conical seat 25 in which a single ball bearing 26 will i be disposed to cooperate with the conical upper end 21 of the supporting member 20, whereby when said locking nut 24 is threaded or turned down on the supporting member 20 the ball bearing 26 will be cammed into engagement be tween the conical upper end 21 of the supporting member and the adjacent wall of the conical seat 25 to lock the pin or needle l9 within its supporting member. The improved ball locking needle will be adjusted for longitudinal movement along the slot 9 formed through the body I of the scriber and will be held in adjusted position along said slot by clamping action between the nut 23 and the upper surface of the guide member 22, as clearly shown in the drawings,
In Figure 2 of the drawings, the scriber is illustrated with the block l3 removed and the ball locking needle IS in position within the slot 9, and a piece of linoleum 28 supported upon a wood strip 29 placed adjacent the piece of linoleum 30, whereby when the piece of linoleum 28 is scribed by the needle [9 and the end out therefrom, a flush joint will be provided between the two pieces of linoleum 28 and 30.
In Figure 7 of the drawings, there is illustrated the needle l9 placed at the inner end of the scriber body I and a cutting knife 6 supported in the outer end in position to cut the piece of linoleum 3|, which has been placed in position to cut a circle therefrom.
In Figure of the drawings, there is illustrated the body I of the scriber supporting an extension bar 32, which supports the scribing needle 33 at its outer extremity whereby circles of any size may be scribed.
In Figure 11 of the drawings, there is illustrated the improved scriber l shown in connection with a T-square 33 and a pair of spaced ball locking scribing needles, said T-square bein placed on a flat side of a piece of linoleum 34 with the needles 19 set the desired distance apart so that as the scriber is drawn along the body of the T-square 33, the desired width of a feature strip or piece of linoleum may be scribed, and later cut. Obviously, varying widths of strips may be scribed and out by spacing the needles and cutting blade the desired distance apart.
In Figure 8 of the drawings the improved ball locking needle is shown on the scriber body I with the scriber placed at the edge of a strip of linoleum 35 to scribe the same when the strip is to be cut from the edge of the piece of linoleum.
In Figure 9 of the drawings, the scriber body I is shown supporting the ball lock needle in position with the scriber body in contact with a wall of a room in position to scribe a line along the 4 piece of linoleum 36 which is placed with its edge in contact with the said wall.
The depending V-shaped guide foot I6 is clearly illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings, and is thus formed so that the scriber may be used when scribing around a corner or for making semi-circular scribings to cut out small pieces of linoleum. The slot l5 formed in the flexible arm I4 is provided so that the scribing needle may be set either close to the said foot I5 or at a point spaced therefrom the desired distance.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised a highly efficient form of linoleum scriber which may be used for under scribing and also for over scribing, and which may be used for scribing circles or strips of various sizes, and for scribing around corners and in close quarters.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A linoleum scriber comprising an elongated inverted channel member constituting a body, a longitudinally extending slot in said body, a reduced head on one end of the body, a straight transverse edge on the other end of said body, 1ongitudinally spaced vertical openings in said head, transversely disposed means in said head for removably and adjustably looking a cutter blade in the openings, a transversely disposed support block on the straight end of the body, means for vertically and longitudinally adjusting a scriber needle in said slot, said last-recited means including an externally threaded supporting member vertically disposed through said slot, a laterally extending head on one end of the supporting member slidably engaged on the under surface of the body, a central longitudinally extending scriber needle receiving opening in said supporting member, a locking nut received on said supporting member and seated on the upper surface of the body for clamping coaction with the head of the supporting member, a conical end on said supporting member, a locking nut having an external conical seat received on the conical end of said supporting member, and a cam locking member received in said seat for locking a scriber needle in the supporting member, said cam locking member including a ball bearing.
3. In combination with a scriber having a body with a longitudinally extending slot therein, means for vertically and longitudinally adjusting a scriber needle in said slot, said means including an externally threaded supporting member vertically disposed through said slot, a laterally extending head on one end of the supporting member slidably engaged on the under surface of the body, a central longitudinally extending scriber needle receiving opening in said supporting member, a locking nut received on said supporting member and seated on the upper surface of the body for clamping coaction with the head of the supporting member, a conical end on said supporting member, a locking nut having an external conical seat received on the conical end of said supporting member, and a cam locking memher received in said seat for looking a scriber 15 needle in the supporting member, said cam locking member including a ball bearing.
