Description

R. W. WINCHELL.
REEL DEVICE FOR BARB FENCE WIRE AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE a. 1916.

RICHARD W. WIN CHELL, OF WHITE RIVER, SOUTH DAKOTA.
REEL DEVICE FOR, BARB FENCE-@VIRE'AND THE LIKE.
Application filed June 8, 1916. Serial No. 101,915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD WV. WIN- CHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVhite Riveiy in the State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Reel Device for Barb F ence-Wire and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to a useful and improved reel for barb fence wire and the like, for instance telegraph and telephone VlI'eS.
One of'the objects of the invention is to provide a reel of this kind designed to be carried by a wagon or the like, so that as the wagon is driven adjacent a line of fence posts, wire may be unreeled, as it is strung upon the posts.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the reel transversely of the wagon body.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby thereel may be arranged to fit different size wagon bodies.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed,
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a wagon body, showing the reel as applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a wagon body, and disposed transversely thereof in engagement with the upper edges of the sides of said body is a I bar 2, one end portion of which is'bent down to form a lug 3, which engages the outer face of one side of the body. lhis bar 2 is provided with a downwardly extending lug 4 spaced from the lug 3, and receives a thumb bolt or screw 5, between one end of which and the lug 3, one side of the body is clamped. Mounted upon the bar 2 near its other end is a pair of sliding clamps 6 and 7. The clamp 6 engages the inner face of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
other side of the body, while the clamp 7 engages the outer face of the same side. The clamps 6' and 7 are provided'with downwardly extending earsS and 9. Threaded in the ear 9 of the clamp 7 is a set bolt or screw 10, between the inner ends of which and the ear 8 of the clamp 6 one side of the body is secured. The clamps 6 and 7 are secured upon the bar 2 adj u'stably, by means of the set' screws or bolts 11 and12, so that the bar 2 will fit wagon bodies of different widths. Secured adjustably upon the bar 2 by means of the set bolt or screw 13, is a slide 14, having a rearwardly extending arm 15, terminating in a bearing 16 for the supporting spindle or shaft 17, upon which the reel 18 is revolubly mounted. The reel 18 is held from downwardmovement on the spindle or shaft 17, by means of the inte-- gral collar 19. The lower end of the shaft or spindle 17 is mounted in a bearing 20 of the arm 21 of the .U-shaped bracket 22,
which arches upon the bottom of the wagon body, and is secured in adjusted positions by means of the set screw or bolt 23. It is to be seen by means of the brackets 22 and slide 14, the spindle or shaft 17 may be adjusted in different positions of the wagon body, whereby the unreeling of the barb fence wire or the like'may be considerably facilitated, particularly with respect to the row of posts for stringing the wire. Pivoted at 24. between the two ears 25 of the upper part of the bracket 22 is a lever 26 having a short arm 27, which is held in frictional contact with the edge of the lower flange of the reel or spool, thereby preventing the fence wire or the like from unreeling too rapidly. The spring 28 holds the short arm 27 normally in frictional engagement with the edge of the lower flange of the reel or spool. It is apparent that by pushing down upon the long arm of said lever, the arm 27 disengages from the reel. Moreover by means of the short arm 27 of said lever, the reel is prevented from loosely vibrating or jogging, when the wire is not being used.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a reel device for barb fence wire, the combination of a support and a bracket adjustably secured on the bottom of the support, of a bar extending transversely of the upper part of the support, a slide on said bar, a spindle having its lower end mountnfd ed in a bearing of the bracket and its upper end in a bearing of said slide, and a reel revolubly supported upon the spindle 2. In a reel device for barb fence Wire,
the combination of a support and a bracket adjustably secured on the bottom of the support of a bar extending transversely of the upper part of the support, a slide on said bar, a spindle having its lower end mounted in a bearing of the bracket and its upper end in a bearing of said slide, and a reel revolubly supported upon the spindle, and means carried bv the bracket held yieldably and 'frictionally in engagement with the reel to prevent the Wire from unreeling too rapidly.
3. In a reel device for barb fence Wire, the combination of a support and a bracket adjustable transversely on the bottom of 'the support, of'a bar mounted upon the angular lever pivoted on the bracket and having a short arm to frictionally engage the lower flange of said reel to prevent the Wire from unreeling too rapidly.
In testimony whereof I ham signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
