Description

J. J. W. WILSON.
Line-Holder.
No. 216,008. Patnted May 2?, 1879.
iaveutor wag h1g Wttoraen N. PETERS. PHOY0-LITHOCRAPHER WASfllNGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. W. WILSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF I HIS RIGHT TO THOMAS ONEILL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LINE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,008, dated May 27, 1879 application filed October 3, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. W. WILSON, of Baltimore city, State of h/Iaryland, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvemen ts in Line-Holders; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same on line :0 00, Fig. 1.
This invention relates to that class of devices in use for holding clothes-lines upon fences; and it consists in a line-holder constructed as hereinafter described, and possessing certain advantages in point of simplicity of construction, adaptability to varying thickness of fence-board, strength, and security, as will be evident from the following description of the device and its mode of operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A A are the jaws of the device, pivoted together at B, and having sharpened points a a. The jaws have, in section, the shape shown in Fig. 2, giving a maximum of strength with a minimum of material. The lateral ribs a are extended into the points a, as shown, for the purpose of re-enforcing them, while the vertical ribs 0 confer the strength requisite to prevent the bending or breaking of the jaws under the strain caused by the wetting of the lines from rain or otherwise. The jaw A is secured above the pivot, and is provided with a smooth groove, to, for the line D.
The method of attaching the deviceis clearly shown in Fig. 1. The holders being mounted on opposite fences or supports, the line is rove from one to the other in the usual manner, and the ends are secured in any convenient way.
It is evident that the security of the device rises with the strain, which being entirely taken off, the holders are readily unhooked from the fence.
The groove to is made as smooth as possible, with a view to the ready passage of the line under varying strain upon its parts. The end I) of the jaw A is curved sharply backward, thus preventing a participation in the use of the holder by the occupants of the ad joining premises, the device affording a salient point for the attachment of but a single line.
The holders are, by preference, constructed of malleable east-iron, galvanized to prevent rustin Obviously, however, the material of which the device is constructed forms no part of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The lineholder herein described, consisting of the jaws A A, pivoted together, and having re-enforced points a, ribs a c, and hook I), substantially as described.
Witness my hand this 30th day of September, 1878.
JOHN J. W. WILSON.
