Description
Oct. 19, 1965 0. cs. LESSARD LINE HOLDER FOR BRICK LAYING Filed April 2, 1962 INVENTOR.
United States Patent Office 3,212,191 Patented Oct. 19, 1965 3,212,191 LINE HOLDER FOR BRICK LAYING Darrald G. Lessard, 975 W. Phillips, Pomona, Calif. Filed Apr. 2, 1962, Ser. No. 184,469 3 Claims. (CL 3385) This invention relates to line holders for brick laying, and included in the objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a line holder for brick laying which includes means adapted to grip any of the webs of any selected hollow brick forming a part of a wall and automatically position perpendicular guide line posts flush with the interior and exterior surfaces of the wall.
Second, to provide a line holder for brick laying wherein the tension applied to the guide line is utilized to' operate a clamping lever forming a part of the gripping means so that increased tension provides increased gripping force.
Third, to provide a line holder for brick laying which eliminates the need of erecting leads and corners before laying the major portion of the wall due to the fact that any brick forming a part of the wall may be utilized.
Fourth, to provide a line holder for brick laying wherein the line may be readily adjusted to various desired heights above the brick, and which permits the bricklayer to work either to the right or to the left side of the line holder.
With the above and other objects in view, as may appear hereinafter, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the line holder shown in position on a row of hollow brick, the bricks being indicated by broken lines;
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view of the line holder taken through 22 of FIGURE 1 with adjacent portions of the bricks shown fragmentarily and in broken lines;
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken through 33 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view taken through 4-4 of FIGURE 2.
The line holder is particularly adapted for use in the laying of hollow brick indicated by A in the drawings. Bricks of this type are provided with end webs B and one or more intermediate webs C.
The line holder includes a rectangular base frame formed of side members 1 and cross members 2 welded or otherwise joined at the corners of the frame. The side and cross members are formed of flat strap metal. The extremities of the cross members 2 are bent downwardly to form lugs 3 which are adapted to fit over the inner and outer faces of the brick.
Centered on one of the cross members 2 and extending downwardly therefrom is a fixed gripping plate 4 which is adapted to bear against an end rib or any of the intermediate ribs of the hollow brick. The gripping plate 4 is also formed of strap metal, and its upper end is folded over and welded or otherwise secured to its cross member 2.
The material from which the plate 4 is formed may be folded upwardly from the cross member 2 and slotted to form a lever journaling member 5 which supports a cross pin 6. A lever 7 is journaled on the pin 6 and includes a downwardly extending arm 8 terminating in a hook portion 9 directed toward the fixed gripping plate 4, and forming a movable gripping member adapted to engage the opposite side of a web from the plate 4, as shown best in FIGURE 2. The lever 7 also includes an upwardly extending arm 10 to which a guide line is adapted, as will be described hereinafter.
At the extremities of the cross members 2 remote from the fixed gripping plate 4 is a pair of upwardly extending line supporting posts 11. These posts may be formed by a continuation of the strap metal which comprises the side members 1, the metal first extending upwardly from the base frame, then folded upon iself and extended downwardly to the cross member 2 and welded thereto so as to form a vertical slot 12.
Each slot 12 receives a line-supporting pin 13 which is adapted to project laterally outward from the post 11 and is provided with a bearing shoulder 14. The opposite or inner end of each pin 13 is screw-threaded and receives a washer 15 and a wing nut 16 so that the pins may be readily and quickly secured in any desired height from the base frame.
The line holder is employed as follows:
The base frame is placed on a brick which is to be used as a reference in constructing the wall in such a manner that the gripping plate 4 fits over one end web B or one of the intermediate webs C, and the lugs 3 fit downwardly over the inner and outer faces of the reference brick.
A guide line D is attached to the upwardly extending arm 10 of the lever 7. If it is desired to direct the guide line D to the right as viewed in FIGURE 2, then the guide line is wrapped a half turn about either one of the pins 13, and then extended to the right to a companion line holder. Tension of the guide line D pivots the lever 7 in a direction to urge the hook portion 9 into bearing engagement with the selected web of the hollow brick.
If it is desired to extend the guide line D to the left as viewed in FIGURE 2, then the guide line is merely directed over the selected pin and drawn to the left. In this case also, tension on the line causes the lever 7 to grip the selected web.
It will be observed that the line may be positioned so as to be flush with either the outside surface or the inside surface of the wall, and may be adjusted to any height with respect to the reference brick within the limits of the upright arms 10.
It will be noted that the hollow bricks are made in standard widths and that the frame is made in different sizes to accommodate the different widths of standard brick.
While a particular embodiment of this invention has been shown and described, it is not intended to limit the same to the exact details of the construction set forth, and it embraces such changes, modifications, and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claims.
