FLOOR-SCRAPER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN D. MoCUnnY, citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FloorScrapers, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention pertaining to the dressing of hard-wood floors precedent to the waxing or varnishing thereof, has for one of its objects to provide a floor scraper embodying a head adapted to be adjusted and adj ustably fixed with respect to a carrying body to place the bit at various angles to the line of movement of the scraper; the said head and carrying body being so con structed and relatively arranged that notwithstanding the adjustable capacity of the former it is strongly connected with and is backed and reinforced by the body with the result that practically all of the strain to which the head is subjected during the scraping operation is placed on the carrying body and is taken off the connections between the same and the head.

Another object of the invention is the provision of effectual and easily manipulated means for fixing the bit to the head.

The details of the invention will be understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof, in which:

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:

A. is the carrying body of the scraper. The said body is preferably made solid of iron, and is supported by wheels B and provided with handles C.

In accordance with my invention, the body A is provided with a forward overhanging portion a in which are vertical apertures b, and is also provided in the back wall 0 of the recess below said overhanging portion a with a vertical central seat (Z that is rounded Specification of Letters Patent.

The head E is provided with a forward depending portion 6, and the bit D is arranged at the forward side of the said portion 6 and is connected thereto through the medium of the bolt h, the clamping aw i, the hand lever j and the nut f, which is disposed and held against turning in the recess 9 back of said portion 6, Flg. 1. The clamping jaw z loosely receives the bolt in and is arranged in front of the bit D and below the flange 7c of head E. Said jaw 2' is provided on its forward side with opposite stops Z, Fig. 3. The hand lever j is fixed to the bolt it so as to turn therewith, and hence when said hand lever is moved to throw its end portion m from one stop Z to the other, the bit will be released, and when the end portion in of the hand lever is moved in the opposite direction between the stops, the bit will be securely clamped and held between the aw 2' and the head E, with out liability of the bit becoming loose. The bit D is notched at n to receive the bolt 7% andhence when pressure is removed from said bit, it may be projected or retracted as occasion demands.

The head E is provided on its rear side with a vertical central projection 39,- and has the portions 1 of its rear side inclined forward and outward as shown. It will also be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that the head E is provided with slots .9 which extend throughout the height of its rear portion and describe parts of a circle from its rear side. The said slots receive bolts 6 that extend also through the apertures Z) in the overhanging portion a of body A and are provided below the head E with heads, and above the body portion a with nuts u, as shown,

By virtue of the construction described in the foregoing, it will be understood that when the nuts 14 are loosened, the head E may be swung either toward the right or toward the left to a greater or less extent to place the bit D at an angle other than a right angle to the line of movement of the scraper. It will also be understood that the bit may be placed and adjustably fixed at various angles to said line of movement as occasion demands; and it will further be there will be practically no liability of the head accidentally moving or changing its position with respect to the body A.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A floor scraper comprising a body recessed in its underside at its forward end to provide an overhanging portion, the said portion being formed near each side with an opening, the vertical forward wall of the recess being formed with a substantially semi-cylindrical seat, a head having a substantially semi-cylindrical boss upon its rear face fitting snugly in the seat in the body, the seat in the recess of the body extending throughout the entire height of its said forward face, the boss upon the head being of the same height as the said seat and filling the same, the said head being formed with vertical slots registering with said openings in the body, and set bolts secured through the openings and the slots, the abutment of the boss in the seat serving as a means for relieving the set bolts of strain.

2. In a floor scraper, a body, a head disposed against the body and pivoted thereto, a blade disposed against the head, a clamping jaw disposed against the blade, the said jaw being formed in its forward face wit-h stops and cam port-ions between the stops, a bolt secured through the head and jaw and through a notch in the blade, and a hand lever fitted upon the bolt and having a lug positioned to ride over the cam portions of the face and clamp the jaw against the blade.
