UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
KARL AUGUST IVINDAHL, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FOR CLEANING KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,181, dated February 16, 1897.
Application filed October 2, 1896.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL AUGUST WINDAHL, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Long Island City, county of Qneens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cleaning Knives, 850., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an apparatus for cleaning knives or other tableware or articles; and it has for its object to provide a combined apparatus of this character which can be conveniently employed in its entirety for the various purposes to which it is adapted.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved combined apparatus. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the knife-cleaning device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the correspondin g supplementary cleaning device.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a box, to which is hinged a cleaning-board 13, adapted to close the box and form a cover for the same when not in operative position. Upon the top surface of the cleaning-board (which is the inner surface with relation to the oflice of said board as a top or cover of the box A) is provided a projecting ridge or flange 19, forming an inclosure B, adapted to contain the cleaning substance.
0 designates the device for cleaning knives, comprised in my combined apparatus and adapted to be used in conjunction with the cleaning-board B. This device 0 embodies a handle 0, from which project two spring-arms c 0', arranged in parallel position and extending in a longitudinal plane from the handle, said arms having a spread or enlarged head portion 0 Surrounding the shank of said arms is an adjustable sliding ring 0, by which said arms may be relatively clamped or released.
The arms c are preferably formed of a single strip of spring-wire, the central portion of which is looped to form the head or enlargement while the ends are extended to conjointly form the shank portion, as shown.
Serial No. 607,641. (No model.)
The heads or enlargements 0 may be slightly concaved (see Fig. 3) to more firmly bind the cleaning block or stone D, which is carried by said device.
The block D maybe formed of cork or any other suitable substance or material and is wedge-shaped, a transverse recess 61 being formed in its rear wall, which recess is engaged by the head of the bottom arm 0, while the top surface of the block is engaged by the head of the top arm, as shown in Fig. 3. The bottom part 01 of the block forms the cleanin g-surface, adapted to be rubbed against the knife or other article when the device is used in conjunction with the cleaning-board B and the knife is held against the latter. I
Normally, when not in use, the device 0 is adapted to be retained Within the box A by a bracketE, adapted to receive the'handle c and preferably arranged at the front of the box.
F designates the device for cleaning the interior or corners of tableware or other articles, which is comprised in my improved combined apparatus and approximately corresponds to the device 0, having the handle 0 and spring-arms c c,c0ntrolled by the ring 0, except that the arms of this device F are preferably turned or bent at right angles to the handle to afford facility and effectiveness in the use for which it is adapted.
The arms of the device F are to clamp and retain a cleaning-cloth G or other adapted material.
\Vhen not in use, the angular device F is adapted to be retained in' position within the box A, adjacent to the knife-cleaning device 0 and at the rear of the box, by means of an approximately T-shaped bracket H, projecting from the bottom of the box, the handle 0 and arms 0' being respectively received under the respective arms of said bracket, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The apparatus in its entirety forms a converse groove in its rear Wall engaged by the head of the under short arm, the top of said block being engaged by the head of the upper arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 1st day of October, 1896.
KARL AUGUST IVINDAI'IL.
