Application filed Gctober 2l, 1914. Serial No. 8622738.
.To @YZ yifi/tom t may concern Be it known that i, JAMES H. KANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a neuT and improved Combination Paper-Hanging Tool, or' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in paper tools, and particularly to a paper hangers tool, and has for an object to provide an improved construction Which may be used to accomplish a plurality of results upon the operation of a single handle.
Another object in view is to provide a paper hangers tool with trimming, cutting and rolling devices Which may be operated from a single gripping member.
ln the accompanying drawings- Figure is a side vier.7 of a tool embodying the invention; .F ig. 2 is a top plan vievv of the structure shown in Fig. i.; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. l on line 3 3; Fig. i is a section through Fig. l on line 4-4- Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, l indicates a handle or grip ping member of any desired material Whichhas the end 2 ot' a knife or cutting meinber 3 projecting therein. Suitable fastening means, as for instance rivets i are provided for clamping the projection or extension 2to the handle. The knife or cutting member 3 is provided With an edge 5 which is preferably rounded as shown in Fig. l so as to easily cut or trim paper along a straight edge. The rounded surface is desirable in that the knife may be rocked tor cutting any unevenness or siight puckering of the paper during the cutting operation. .Arranged at the outer end ci knife 8 and as tar from 'the edge 5 aspossible isa disk 5 provided with an edge 7. Disk 6 is pivotally mounted upon a suitable vjournal member 8 which is designed to trim or cut the paper along the ceiling, molding or other suitable stop or obstacle. in placing paper upon the Wali a paper hanger usually allows a slight overlap at each end which must be removed by some means, and applicant has in the present construction provided the disk 6 for removing this surplus paper so that the paper remainingon the Wall will t exactly the space desired. ln order to cause the edges of the paper to properly adhere to the Wall, roller 9 isprovided formed with a suitable covering of any material, as for instance rubber. A pivotal member 1 0 extends through roller 9 and fits in the brackets ll and112 which have extensions 13 and 14: secured to the eX- tension or projection 2 by suitable rivets 15. It will be noted that the various devices necessary to properly prepare a strip of paper 'and apply the same are connected with a single member, namely, knife 3 or the eX- tension thereof so that a single handle l may operate any and all of the devices in the desired sequence, namely, the edge 5, 'thenv the edge 7 of disk 6 and inally the roller G What claim isl. ln a paper hangers tool, a flat blade 'for trimming the edge of a strip of paper, a Wheel journaledon said blade formed Withy a cutting edge for trimming the ends of said strip of paper, a roller connected With one end of said knife and a single handle for operating all of saiddevices.
2. In a device of lthe character described, a flat knife formed with a rounded cutting edge, a disk formed With an edge at its periphery, means for pivotally mounting said disk at one end of said knife, a pair of brackets rigidly secured to said knife near the shank, a roller journaied'in said brackets, and a handle rigidly secured to the shank of said knife so as to operate said knife, said roller and said disk.
4In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciication `in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES HENRY KANE.
Witnesses:
JOHN J. Lyons, THOMAS J. CARROLL.
