GEORGE SMALLEY, OF HASTINGS, MICHIGAN.
v TAPE REMOVER.
Application filedMay e,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE J. SMALLEY, a citizen of the United'Statesof America, and resident of llastingspin the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape Removers, of which the following is a specifi'cation. c i Q g 1 77 This invention relates to the treatmentof veneer and more particularly to a device intended for use in removing tape from veneer, the said inventon v including novel means for applying a solvent or moistening agent to softenathe binding agent such as the glue or adhesive which is usedofor securing tape to the back of the veneer. It is' well known that in the treatment of veneer, the said veneer fis taped together or mended, and after the work is ready to be cleaned and the tape is to be removed, the apparatus of this invention is of great utility, since it provides novelmeans for softening the adhesive and dislodging the tape practically at one operation.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to produce an apparatus of the character indicated which can be manually operated; and the said invention furthermore contemplates theprovision of novel means fo adjusting a scraper of the device to compensate for wear or for other conditions.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed. 7
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application wherein like characters denote corresponds lng parts 1n the several views, and in which- Figure'l illustratesa view in elevation of the apparatus embodying the invention;
Figure 2 illustrates a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 illustrates a front end view of the steam distributing head, with a fragment of the handle in elevation; and
Figure 4 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of a fragment of the device.
In these drawings 5 denotes a pipe or hose for the supply of steam, which is attached to the hollow body 6. The body may have annular ribs or threads 7 by which the hose may be attached to the body, and pref- Specification of Letters'latent. Patented Feb, -28,
1921. Serial No. 468,061.
erably the end of body remote fromthe hose is externally threaded as shownat 8.
A, collar v9 is adjustably secured on the body, bymeansofa set screw 10, and the said angle thereto to the surface of the veneer being treated. it The 4 head 13, has a rearwardly extending hollow boss 15wl1i'chis threaded on the endof the body, and shoulders such as 16 are formed on the rear surface of the head on each side of the boss, the said shoulders being preferably slightly diagonal with 1gesdpect to the longitudinal axis of the said 0 y. V
A scraper 17 consists of a blade of proper dimensions having a cut-away portion, as at 18, forming a clearance for the hollow boss; and the said blade has slots 19 and 20 to receive set screws 21 and 22 respectively, which are threaded in the shoulders of the nozzle or sprinkler head, in order that the blade may be adjusted with respect to the said head, the said adjustment being effective to compensate for wear, primarily, although it may be used for adjustin the po- SltlOll of the scraping edge with relation to the sprinkler head or nozzle. 7
Owing to the fact that the sprinkler head is constructed in the manner stated with the shoulders at the rear thereof, it constitutes a means for mounting the scraper to accomplish the results stated, and of course, the adjustable mounting by which the handle is connected to the body is a further advantage in that it allows for positioning the nozzle well in advance of the handle, if certain conparent that steam which passes through the body or feed pipe, escapes through the sprinkler or nozzle and impinges the tape,
and the heat and moisture of the steam will 1 result in softening the adhesive whether it be glue or gum compounds which are-usually employed on this class of tape, and that they tape which has undergone the change indicated is attacked by the scraper and dislodged or wholly removed, so that the process "of removing the tape is completed at one operation.
I claim. v
1. In a combined moistener and scraper, a; hollow bodyhaving means of steam supply connected to it, a sprinkler head attached to the oppositee'nd of thebody and havingdis charge orifices extending obliquely to the longitiidinalyaxis of the body, shoulders formed 'on the. rear surfaces ofthe sprinkler head oppositerthe' sidehavingthe orifices,
, screws threaded inthe said shoulders, at
scraper blade having a recess forming a clearance for a portion of the sprmkler'head and slotsfto receive the screws by which the scraper is adjustably secured in place,
and a handle on'the saidbody, v
2. Ina combined moistener and scraper, a body, acollar adjustably secured thereto, a. curved shank extending outwardly and parallel with the body having a handle, means 2 I a 1 ,4o7,955
head connected to the body and having dis- 7 charge orifices obliquely positioned with re lation to the longitudinal axis of the body, a hollow boss by which the sprinkler head is connected to the body, shoulders on the rear surfaces of the said sprinkler head, a scraper blade having a recess forming a clearance for theihol'low boss and havingslots, and screws extending through the slots of the blade and anchored in the shoulders of the sprinkler head whereby the-blade is adjustably securedin' position.
- 3.111 a combined moistcner andscraper, a body, a handle adjustably connected thereto, means atone} end of thebod for supplying steam to thebody,a sprink er-head having a hollow boss threaded on the endofthe body opposite thesteamsupply and having discharge orificesfor the steam, shoulders formed onthe rear side of the body, anda blade having a clearance 'for thehollow boss, the said blade having parallel slots and anchoring screws secured in the shoulders of the sprinkler head and projecting through the slots whereby the bladeis held indifg 'ferent positions of adjustment.- for supplyingisteam to the body, a sprinkler GEORGE J. sMA LLE'Y.
