Description

UNITED stares,
- HARRY INGRAHAM Yiinviinsorv wnsr soifiERv'ILLE; iviAssAciiUsE'TTs. f
worm-nonnina enzimi.
Applicationnied November 2e, 1919. fseriai No'. 340,356'.
To all @07mm it may concern Be it known that HARRY INGRAHAM LAviiRs, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of l/Vest Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts,
have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in iWork-Holding Clamps, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to work holding clamps, and particularly to a clamp for holding portions of carpenter o-r cabinet work together until the glue used for uniting the same has become sufficiently set.
It is a purpose of my invention to provide a clamp of this character which is cf simple and eiiicient construction, and in which means is provided for clamping a piece of work and forcing another piece of work linto proper position with relation to the first piece of work, such means being operable by a single element so that theV two functions are performed simultaneously.
l will describeone form ofclamp ein-v bodyiiig my invention and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view, showing in perspective 'two pieces of work having applied thereto one form of clamp embodying myV invention; e.
F ig.- 2 is a longitudinal section of the clamp in its app-lied position upon the work; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4e is a similar view, taken onthe Vline 4 4; of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the-drawings, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts, P and P designate a pair,
of plates of substantially U-shaped formation which are secured together in spaced' parallelism by pins 15 and 15av` and rods 16 arranged at the forward and rear ends of the plates, respectively. At points between the plates F and P the rods 16 lare provided with tubular sleeves 16a for the purpose of maintaining the rear ends of the plates in proper spaced relation. Fulcrumed upon thepins-15 and 15n at points intermediate their ends are a pair of jaws J and J which are preferably formed of wood. The forward ends'of the jaws J and J are inturned and covered with sheets of soft material such as rubber or the like to prevent mar-V ring of the workby the jaws. The rear ends l the plates l) and P of the jaws or those ends disposed between are recessed upon their confronting faces to provide inclined surfaces 18 between which is adapted to work an expanding member M. As shown in Fig.
2, the expanding member is of wedge shaped formation and as shown in Fig. fthe top and bottom Vwalls thereof are formed with tongues 19 whichwork in grooves 120 formed i in the inclined faces 18. The front side of the expanding member is recessed to receive a nut 21 and extending through the latter and the member is a screw threaded shaft 22n The forward end of the shaft 22 is provided with a foot 23, whileits rear end is formed with a crank 24 which is adapted to be operatedrbya handle 25.
In the ,applied position ofthe clamp, as shown. in Figs. 1 and 2, one' piece of work A is vplaced between the parallelportionsof the plates P and P and between the jaws'v J and J with one edge of the work bearing against the foot 23.- The other piece of work A rwhich is adapted to loe-glued tothe piece Av is properly positioned `with relation tothe latter' and is interposedbetween the outer ends of the-jaws J andJ. VWith the clamp in this position, it is obvious that iipon rotation of the shaft 22 a forward feeding of the same is effected by its lcoacf soI tion with the nut 21 thereby forcing the e the contour of the member,Y and the inclined vsurfaces 18, itis obvious that an outward movement of the adjacent ends of the jaws isV effected to cause their forward ends to securely grip the piece of 'workA In this manner the two pieces of work are forced together and securely held until the glue has become sufficiently set, whereby an efiicient uniting of the work is effected. It will be understood that'the clamp may be readily removed from thejwork by'V rotating the shaft 22 in the Voppositedirection so vas to move thefoot 23 out of engagement with the piece of work A and toV cause a forward movement of theexpanding member, there by permitting the forward ends of the :jaws to disengage the piecer of work A. l f
Although 1 have herein shown andV def scribed only one form of clamp embodyingVV -my invention, it is to be understood thati various changes and modifications may be made herein Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the spirit and scope ofthe appended claim. Y l
Having thus describedV my invention, l claim:
A clamp Comprising a pair of U-shaped p1ates5a-pair of jaws lcrumed between said plates, one of ythe ends of vsaid jaws 10 having their confronting faces recessed to provide oppositely inclined surfaces, @block interposed between said ends and having sliding engagement with said surfaces,`a
nut carried'by 'said block, a screw `threaded.
shaft extending through said block and threadedly engaging said nnt,3 foot carried by said shaft, and acrank Jfor actuating the shaft. :i
