- APPLIANCE ADAPTED' FOR use as A TAP WRENGH on VISE.
' Application filed May 29,
T all 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARTIN SEiLLoN- and ERNEST RnU'rER, citizens of the Republic of France, residing, respectively, at Paris, France, have invented an Improved Appliance Adapted for Use as a Tap l/Vrench or Vise, (for which we have filed an application in France March 6, 1919,) of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention has reference to an ad justable appliance suitable for use as a tap wrench or hand vise.
The appliance comprises a pair of members adapted to be forced towards each other by screws so as to grip a tap or tool in such manner as to prevent all play. The appliance may form an ordinary tap wrench or a tap wrench with a single arm for use in diificult places as in angles or corners for example, and mayalso serve as a hand vise for holding a tool or a piece of work to be treated, in either of two positions at 90 in relation to each other.
A constructional example of the improved appliance is shown in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows partly in longitudinal section and partly in elevation the two members forming the appliance.
Fig. 2 shows the members combined as a normal tap wrench;-
Fig. 3 shows the members combined to form a tap wrench for use in dificult places as in corners or angles for example. i
Fig. 4 shows the members employed as a vise and holding a piece of work to be treated; and
Fig. 5 also shows the appliance in use as a vise the piece of work held thereby being replaced by a tool held in a position perpendicular to that occupied by the piece of work shown in Fig. 4.
As will be seen from the drawings the appliance comprises two members of similar size and shape, the member 1 being formed with screw-threaded holes 2 engaged by clamping or pressure screws 3 which are engaged freely in suitable apertures in the member 1. Each said member is prolonged to form a handle 4:, 4 and is formed upon its inner face with a series of grooves such as 5 and 6 suitable for gripping a piece of work in order to hold it firmly in different positions. A screw 7 adjustable in one of Speeificationof Letters Patent. P t t d M 9 2 1920. Serial No. 385,348.
the members forms a stop adapted to extend any desired distance beyond the inner face of the member in which it is mounted in order to ensure the parallelism of the members 1, 1 when the tool is, as shown in Figs. at and 5' respectively, employed as a tap wrench for use in corners and as a vise.
What we claim is 2- 1. An appliance of the type described comprising a pair of members of similar size and shape and including longitudinally projecting handle elements, a pair of screws engaging freely in one of said members and adapted to be threaded into the other member to clamp the members upon a desired object, said members being adapted to engage the object with their handle elements extending in a common direction or in opposite directions, the inner faces of said members being formed with grooves for gripping the object, one pair of said grooves extending longitudinally inward from the ends of the said members, and another pair of said grooves extending transversely of the said members between the said screws.
2. Air appliance of the type described comprising a pair of members of similar size and shape and including longitudinally projecting handle elements, a pair of screws engaging freely in one of said members and adapted to be threaded into the other member to clamp the members upon a desired ob- 'ject, said members being adapted to engage the object with their handle elements extending in a common direction or in opposite directions, the inner faces of said members being formed with grooves for gripping the object, one pair of said grooves extending longitudinally inward from the ends of the said members, and another pair of said grooves extending transversely of the said 'members between the said screws, and
an abutment screw threaded transversely! through one of said members toward the end thereof opposite to that having the longitudinal groove.
3. An appliance of the type described comprising a pair of members of similar size and shape and including longitudinally projecting handle elements, a pair of screws engaging freely in one of said members and adapted to be threaded into the other member to clamp the members upon a desired object, said members being adapted to engage the object with their handle elements extending in a common direction or in opposite directions, the inner faces of said members being formed with grooves for gripping the object, one pair of said grooves extending longitudinally inward from the ends of the said members, and another pair of said grooves extending transversely of the said members between the said screws, 10 sald members havmg also a second pair of
