I No. 788,962 PATENTED MAY 2, 1905.
M. W. STOUGHTON. SAW CLAMP.
. APPLICATION FILED APE. 12,1904.
NiTnn STATES Patented May 2, 1905.
MONT W. STOUGHTON, OF MAGIC, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-CLAMP- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,962, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed April 12, 1904:. Serial No. 202,786.
To (1/7 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MONT W. STOUGHTON, a citizen .of the United States of America, residing at Magic, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to saw-clamps for holding saws while they are being sharpened, and has for its object the provision of a saw-clamp of novel character adapted to be detachably applied to an ordinary bench-vise.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide two clamping-jaws each of the same construction as the other and such jaws being so formed that they may be applied to the jaws of a bench-vise of the ordinary character or a vise of the novel construction hereinafter described, saw-clamping jaws being provided with means of attachment whereby they can be easily and rapidly secured on the vise-jaws or detached therefrom.
My invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bench-vise having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same.
The vise shown on the drawings is composed of a body portion 1, having ears 2, pierced for the passage of bolts by which the vise is fastened to the bench. the ways 3, the stationary jaw 4, the screw 5, the handle 6, and the sliding jaw 7. The jaws 4 and 7 have the inwardly-turned upper ends, which when the vise is used in theordinary manner abut one against the other to clamp the material to be held in the vise.
My improved clamp consists of two similar members which are of the same size and construction, each being formed with a horizontal clampingjaw 9, which isjoined by diagonal bars 10 l0 and a vertical bar 11 to the base 12. The inner faces of the bases 12 12 are flat and lie in the same plane With the inner faces of the jaws 9 9, so that when a saw is placed in the clamp it will be simultaneously gripped by the jaws 9 9 and the flat faces of the bases 12 12. which thus constitute supplementary jaws which grip and sustain the sawblade below the main jaws 9 9 of the clamp and assist in preventing the saw-blade from moving or vibrating while it is being sharpened or otherwise treated.
The bases 12 12 are formed with curved arms 13 13, that overlap the outer surfaces of the jaws 4; and 7 of the vise and are provided with the curved arms 14: 14, that fit within the jaws 4 and 7 when the clamp is in position on the vise, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The jaws A and 7 of the vise are provided with screw-threaded holes that receive screws 15 15, which pass through holes in the curved arms 13 13, which screws are provided with flat heads or thumb-pieces 16 1 6, by means of which the screws may be driven into screwthreaded holes in the jaws 4 and 7.
A clamp constructed as above described is applied to the vise in the position shown in the drawings and when so applied constitutes an attachment by means of which a saw can be very securely held in position while it is being sharpened, set, or otherwise treated, and in securing a saw in position it is arranged between the two sections of the clamp so that it will be clamped near its toothed edge by the jaws 9 9 and near its opposite edge by the flat faces of the bases 12 12. The clamping members are brought together and separated by operating the vise in the usual manner that is, by turning the screw 5 in one direction or the other by means of the handle 6.
Having fully described my invention, what In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MONT W. STOUGHTON.
