vBe it known that I, EUGENE S. KARL-SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State 5 of LIllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool .Holders, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in tool holders, and is intended to be used, more specially, in connection with enginelathes, shapers and plan es for performing heavy work thereon, and consists in certainvpeculiar-ities 'of'the construction, novel arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof, 'as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
@ne of the objects of the invention is, to furnish a tool holder of but few parts which may be readily attached andheld together as a unit for mounting. or with a tool mounted "thereon, thereby avoiding the loss or misplacement of parts-.ofthe holder and rendering it of such form and conditlon as to be more conveniently or easily placed in operafive position within a tool post of a lathe, shaper ror other metal-working machine, or removed therefrom.
Another object is, the provision in a tool holdenof relatively tiltable clamping members provided with means for holding engagement with tools of different sizes, whereby they may be used interchangeably and will be properly supported against thrusts "imposed upon them against the work.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the following description and explanation.

As shown, the holder consists of three parts or members, the body or supporting member being indicated by the reference numeral 10, which is provided with a longitudinal channel 11 extended throughout its length and open at its upper part to receive acorrespondingly shaped portion of another member 12 of the holder which may be termed the tiltable clamping member thereof. The third member of the device consists in one form thereof, of a screw 13 and in the other form thereof of a pin 14, each of which is used for assisting in holding the members 10 and '12 together as a'unit'. 1
The base of the channel 11 in the body or supporting member 10 is'provided at one of its ends with an inwardly and downwardly inclined floor 15 which is by preference furnished with transversely disposed teeth 16 or serrations for the purpose of providing a rough or engaging surface on which the lower surface of the cutting tool 17 may rest. The channel 11 is provided at the inner end of the floor 15 with a substantially vertical wall or abutment 18 against which the inner end of the tool 17 will ordinarily rest in the operation of the device.
Near its opposite end from that in which the inclined floor 15 is provided, the body 10 is provided in its bottom with a countersunk opening 19 for the reception of a screw 13 and its head, which screw engages a screw-threaded opening 20 formed in the lower portion of the member 12 at a suitable point to register with the opening 19 of the body of the device. t will be observed that the opening '19 is considerably larger than the screw 13 and its head so as to permit of play or some movement of the screw independently of the body 10. As the head of the screw 13 is of greater diameter than the opening 19 it is apparent that it will be prevented passing through the opening 19 in the direction of the member 12, and by this arrangement the- members 10 and 12 will be 2 of the drawing.
detachably and loosely connected together. Inwardly of the opening 19, the floor of the channel 11 is by preference provided with a transverse V-shaped groove 21 for the reception of a similarly disposed and shaped projection 22 located on the lower surface of the member 12 of the holder.
The lower surface of the front portion of the member 12 is provided with a longitudinal recess 23 the upper surface of which recess is downwardly and inwardly inclined and provided with transverse teeth or serrations 25 for the same purpose as the teeth or serrations 16 above mentioned. The recess 23 has at its inner end a terminal wall 26 which is-substantially vertical and lies in alignment with the wall or abutment 18 and for a similar purpose. The front end of the body 10 is provided at its upper portion with a transverse connection 27 for the sides of the said body, which connection is by preference located on the outer surface of the upper edges of the body, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 41 of the drawing.
The front end of the member 12 is reduced as at 28 so as to permit of said end being readily inserted between the connection 27 and the outer portion of the floor of the channel of the body.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that by placing the clamping member 12 within the channel of the body 10 in about the position shown in Fig. 2 that the projection 22 on said member 12 will rest in the transverse groove 21 of the body, when by inserting the screw 13 through the opening 19, and causing the same to engage the opening 20. the said parts will be connected together for rocking or tiltable movement. Now by pressing down on the rear end of the member 12, it is manifest the front end thereof will be moved upwardly against the connection 27, thus permitting the tool 17 to be inserted between the toothed floors 15 and 24: as shown in Fig. As soon as pressure is removed from. the rearend of the member 12, the front part of said member will, by reason, of its gravity. engage the upper surface of the tool 17. The holder as a unit can now be placed in the opening 29 of the post 30 of the machine which opening may be of any suitable shape, but by preference of a shape to correspond with that of the body of the holder. -When positioned substantially as shown in Fig. 1, the front portion of the member 27 can be pressed downwardly by means of the screw 31 of the post, thus causing said member. and the body lO to securely clamp and hold the tool 17 in place.
If desired, one or more plates or thin washers, not shown, of a'size to be easily inserted in the opening for the tool'17, can be interposed between the inner end of said tool andthe walls 18 and 26 so as to adjust the tool lon itudinally with respect to the holder. In *igs. 5 and 6 I have shown a slight modification in the construction of the device which consists in dispensing with the openings 19 and 20 in the members 10 and 12 respectively, and also with the screw 13 and employing in their stead a pin 14 which is extended through suitable openings in the sides of the body 10 and in the rear portion of the member 12. When this modified form is employed for holding the memberslO and 12 together, it is manifest that the opening 32 being considerably larger than the .pin
14, will permit of rocking or tilting movement of said member so that it can be at its front portion, forced towards the front portion of the body in order to securely clamp the tool.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a r 1. A tool holder comprisinga-channeled member, another member fulcrumed between its ends in said channel for relative longitudinal tilting movement of said members, and means loosely connecting said members together near one of their ends. 2. A tool holder comprising a channeled member, and another member fulcrumed between its ends in said channel. for relative longitudinal tilting movement of said mem bers, the same having at: one'of their ends in their adjacent surfaces registering longitudinally extended recesses for the reception of a tool and adjustable means loosely connecting said members together near their other ends.
3. In a tool holder,the combination with an elongated longitudinally channeled body having in the floor of its channel at one end thereof a longitudinally extended recess and near its other end an opening. of a tiltable clamping member located in the channel of said body and having a longitudinally disposed recess in its surface adjacent the floor of said channel to register with the'first named recess and provided with an'opening in register with the opening in the body member, means interposed between the ad- 7 jacent surfaces of the said members for permitting relative tiltable movement ofsaid members, and means extended into said openings for loosely connecting the members together.
