To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn PoNrA'rowsKI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Wood-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand wood clamps.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a hand clamp adapted for securely holding work to be operated upon such as pieces of wood which are being glued together, the arrangement being such as to not only support the pieces of wood but to force the same together simultaneously with the clamping operation.
A further object of the device is the provision of a hand clamp whereby articles positioned therein will be subjected to pressure inserted thereon in planes perpendicular to each other simultaneously.-
A still further object is to provide a veneering clamp for pressing a plurality of strips in firm contact with each other and simultaneously forcing another member against the adjacent ends of the said strips.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed. In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figs. 3 and 4, are detail sectional views taken respectively upon lines III-III and IV-IV of Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sectional views taken respectively upon lines VV and VIVI of Fig. 1.
The present clamp being especially adapted for wood working, may be formed of wood or metal as found desirable, the same providing two opposite elongated jaws 10 and 11 having inner engaging faces 12. A screw 13 is threaded through a transverse opening 14 in the jaw 11 and has a cylindrical free end 15 engaging withinasocket16 in the opposite inner face of the jaw 10, the
said screw having an operating handle 17 upon its outer end. A similar screw 18 is also screw-threaded through the jaw 11 passing through an opening 19 in the said jaw and freely extending through an enlarged opening 20 in the jaw 10 and provided with an operating handle 21. The jaws 10 and 11 have tapered free end portions 22 between which portions the wood to be held is readily inserted.
-It will be understood that by turning the screw 18 in the proper direction, the jaw 10 will be engaged by the handle 21 thus forcing the jaws 10 and 11 toward each other and when the screw 18 is retracted, the jaw 10 freely slides over the said screw 18 by means of its opening 20. When the screw 13 is tightened it forces the lower ends of the jaws 10 and 11 apart'assisting in maintaining the jaw faces 12 in parallelism as well as tightening the jaw ends 22 upon the work.
Extension jaws 23 are provided for each of the jaws 10 and 11 being in the form of U- shaped members having opposite side strips 24 slidably mounted upon longitudinal shoulders 25 provided in the opposite outer sides of the aws 10 and 11 by cutting away the jaw sides as at 26. The strips 24 are provided with longitudinal slots 27 adapted for the reception of screws 28 carried by the jaws 10 and 11 which maintain the extensions 23 slidably arranged thereon.
' A catch plate 29 is provided for each of the strips 24, the said plates each having a tooth 30 adapted to engage with the adjacent rack or teeth 31 of the extensions 23. The plates 29 are slidably secured transversely upon the jaws 10 and 11 by means of headed screws 32, a cross bar 33 connecting the plates 29 together outwardly of the said jaws, which bars span finger receiving recesses 34 in the adjacent face of the jaws allowing the plates 29 to be readily shifted with respect to the strip teeth 31. Jaw blocks 35 are pivoted to the outer ends of the extension jaws 30, the inner faces 36 of the said blocks 35 being in alinement with the engaging jaw faces 12 while the adjacent faces 37 of the blocks 35 are arranged to proj ect inwardly between the strips 24 when the blocks are shifted upon their pivots 38 as best illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When the blocks 35 are arranged with their faces 37 substantially parallel, the work to be operated upon may be positioned between the jaw faces 12 and. the inner sides of the strip 24 overlapped by the said blocks 35. Sockets 39 are provided in the block faces 37 adapted for the reception of conical lugs 40 arranged upon the free ends of the jaws l0 and 11, the lugs being so received within the sockets 39 when the jaw extensions 23 are retracted with the block faces 37 engaging the end faces 41 of the jaws 10 and 11.
A work positioning mount is carried. by the base portions 42 of the jaws 10 and 11 adjacent the screw 13, the said mount be ing in the form of oppositely arranged pairs of braces 43 pivoted together at their inner ends as at 44, U-shaped tables 45 being trunnioned upon the said pivots 44. The opposite outer ends of the braces 43 are provided with substantially L-shaped slots 46 for receiving headed screws 47 carried by bosses 48 upon the said jaw bases 42. By means of the slots 46 the braces 43 are adjustable longitudinally by arranging either ends of the slots 46 in supporting contact with the screws 47 thus varying the positions of the tables 45 so that the tables and their pivots 44 will be arranged either in alinement with each other or upon slightly difierent planes.
By referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it being understood that the oppositely arranged tables 45 have their supporting faces in alinement with each other as shown in Fig. 2, it will be understood that upon drawing the jaws l0 and 11 toward each other, the said tables 45 will be forced toward the extension jaw blocks 35, the tables maintaining the same relative positions and adapted to force the work mounted upon said tables slowly and regularly toward the said blocks 35. Two members to be glued together such as the wooden members 49 shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 may be mounted upon the tables 45 between the jaw faces 12 and beneath the overhanging block faces 37 and upon drawing the jaws 10 and 11 toward each other by means of the screws 13 and 18, the members 49 will be firmly contacted together by reason of the tables 45 moving toward the blocks 35 while the opposite sides of the member 49 will be suit ably restrained or contacted if desired by the jaw faces 12, it being understood that the auxiliary jaws 23 are extended to the required distance and retained against further outward movement by means of the engaging plates 29.
It will thus be understood that a wood clamp is arranged. serviceable not only as the usual clamp for maintaining articles between the opposite parallel jaws thereof, but also for squeezing articles together longitudinally of the clamping jaws simultaneously with the holding operation.
l/Vhat I claim as new is 1. A clamp comprising opposite jaws, screw connections between the said jaws, extensions adjustably carried longitudinally of the jaws, inwardly projecting bearing blocks pivoted to the free ends of the said extensions, pairs of braces pivoted to the opposite sides of the base portions of the said jaws with their inner ends pivoted together, work supports arranged in substantial alinement with each other at the points of pivotal connection between the said braces and normally arranged in a plane intermediate the said jaws, the said tables be ing adapted for movement toward the said blocks during the closing operation of the device.
2. Aclamp comprising opposite elongated jaws having opposite cut away portions on their inner sides and oppositely arranged base ends, U-shaped'extensions slidably arranged within the said cut away portions, pivoted bearing blocks at the free ends of the said extensions, the said extensions having toothed outer faces, retaining plates slidably arranged and transversely positioned upon opposite sides of the said jaws proj ecting within the paths of movement of the said toothed portions when inwardly positioned and operating cross bars carried by the said plates outwardly of the jaws, the outer faces of the said jaws being recessed inwardly of the said bars.
3. Aclamp comprising opposite elongated jaws having opposite cut away portions on their inner sides and oppositely arranged base ends, U-shaped extensions slidably arranged within the said cut away portions, pivoted bearing blocks at the free ends of the said extensions, the said extensions having toothed outer faces, retaining plates slidably arranged and transversely positioned upon opposite sides of the said jaws projecting within the paths of movement of the said toothed portions when inwardly positioned and operating cross bars carried by the said plates outwardly of the jaws, the outer faces of the said jaws being recessed. inwardly of the said bars, a pair of pivoted braces pivoted to each of the opposite faces of the said jaw bases, and work supporting tables pivoted upon the inner ends of the said braces normally arranged in substantial alinement with each other in a plane intermediate the said jaws.
