To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. SMITHSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vises.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a vise in which the jaws may be readily brought together to securely clamp the work in parallel relation as to the bench.
The inventio-nhas for another object the provision of a vise which will be constructed in such manner that it may be readily se cured to one leg of a bench to hold the work below or adjacent to the edge of the bench or in front of the same.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision ofa vise of the above-stated character which will be of such construction and operation that the jaws may be at all times securely held in parallel relation and may be tightened upon the work by a slight turn of the clampinghandles mounted upon the adjustable screw.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a vise of this character which will be provided with a pair of guide rods carried on the other jaw and adj ustably engaged through. the inner jaw, as well as means for resiliently retaining the outer jaw in its outermost position, and means for antomatically locking the clamping handle in adjusted position to prevent the other jaw from moving away from the work.
With these general objects in View and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the inner jaw carrying member which has its upper end curved outwardly to form the inner jaw 2. The member 1 may be secured to the 3 and body 5 of the bench by suitable clamping members 5 and 6 respectively, and a pair of bottom guide members 10 are secured to the inner jaw carrying member 1 and ada oted to be fastened to the lower portion of t e outer jaw carrying member 8 by a suitable securing member 7 engaged through the proper openings 12 in said guide members 10. It will be understood that any suitable number of openings 12 may be provided throughout the length of the guide members 10.
The outer'jaw carrying member 8 has a pair of guide bars 13 secured in suitable transverse slots 14- and secured in adjusted position by suitable set screws 15. The opposite ends of the guide members 13 project through openings 16 in the inner jaw carrying member 1 and serve to properly guide the upper portion of said outer jaw carrying member 8.
The central adjusting screw 17 is slidably engaged through the outer jaw carrying member 8 and is threaded through the stationary nut 18 which is secured in a suitable manner in the inner jaw carrying member 1, it being understood that the rear or inner end of the adjusting screw 17 is provided with a screw brace 19. A suitable handwheel 20 is mounted upon the outer end of the central adjusting screw 17 by means of which the central adjusting screw 17 may be readily rotated in either direction.
Teeth 21 are formed on the corners of the cam members 22, which latter are secured to the outer face of the outer jaw-carrying from the spirit and scope of the claims. It
member 8 and at opposite sides of the cen tral adjusting screw 17 and as will be readily understood by referring to Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings. A clamping handle 23 is loosely mounted upon the central adjusting screw 17 and provided with opposite 'recesses 2 1 in its inner face with beveled walls to ride upon the cam members 22 to lock the clamping handle 23 in adjusted position. The clamping handle 23 may be readily rotated by the elongated operating link 26 which is slidably engaged through the clamping handle 23, extending longitudinally of the same and upon opposite sides of the central adjusting screw 17. This operating link 26 may be readily moved lon gitudinally in either direction and employed for turning the clamping handle 23 to cause the same to ride upon the cam member 22 after the hand-wheel 20has been moved inwardly to position against said clamping handle 23 thereby causing a clamping action of the jaws 2 and 9 upon the work positioned between the same.
A suitable spring 27 is positioned between the inner jaw carrying member 1 and the outer jaw-carrying member 8, said spring 27 being reversely curved and having its lower end secured to the inner jaw-carrying member 1 in any suitable manner, while its opposite or upper end rests within the longitudinal recess 28 provided for the same in the inner face of the working-j aw member 8.
From the foregoing, it will be readily seen that I have provided an outer jaw-carrying member 8 which may be readily adjusted with respect to the inner jaw-carrying member 1 and the jaw 9 then forced toward the jaw 2 to securely clamp the work between said jaws 7 and 9, the clamp handle 23 being automatically locked in adjusted position.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing will be understood that the device is con- 4 opening and threaded in the inner jaw carrymg member, a pair of cam blocks secured upon said Qllter jaw carrying member and provided with curved slde faces and oppositely beveled front faces, said cam blocks having teeth formed in the corners thereof connecting the side and front faces, means for securing said cam blocks in position, and a clamping handle mounted upon said adjusting member and movable over said cam blocks to tighten the outer jaw carrying member, the said clamping handle having means for engagement with said teeth to lock the handle in adjusted position.

A vise comprising an inner jaw carrying member, an outer jaw carrying member, means for supporting said outer jaw carrying member opposite said inner jaw carrying member, means for resiliently forcing said outer jaw carrying member away from said inner jaw carrying member, means for adjusting said outer jaw carrying member with respect to said inner jaw carrying member, cam blocks mounted upon said outer jaw carrying member, a clamping handle mounted upon said adjusting means and provided with oppositely extended beveled portions for engagement with said cam blocks, means pivoted to one side of said handle for locking the same in adjusted position upon said cam blocks, and an operating handle slidably mounted in the clamping handle.
