SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,593, dated February 8, 1898.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that we, OLE CHRISTENSEN and JOSEPH MARTIN J ORGENSEN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Park City, county of Summit, and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Comb and Shears, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Our invention relates to an improved device in which we attach a comb to one ofthe blades of a pair of shears, thereby embodying a comb and shears in one apparatus; and the object of our invention is to provide an effective device to be used by the barber trade generally, whereby much time and labor are saved in cutting or trimming the hair.

We attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section onthe line w 00, Fig. 1.

The apparatus consists, primarily, of the shears A, to the upper blade of which is fastened the comb B. A bar I) is fastened to the blade by means of the screws a. The bar I) is constructed with a groove on its upper edge. A comb B sets in this groove and is held tightly in same by the action of the spring sides I) of the groove pressing against the comb B.

Ordinarily in trimming or cutting an individuals hair the operator employs both a comb and shears, using the comb to collect the hair which he grips between two fingers. He then discards the comb, laying it aside or grasping it inconveniently in two of his disengaged fingers, while he cuts the hair with a pair of shears employed in his free hand. Now it is obvious that by the use of our device the inconvenience involved in discarding and rengaging the comb (after and before every cutting) is done away with, as the comb and shears, beingpractically one apparatus, are operated by one hand, leaving the other free to grip the hair after it has been gathered by the comb.

The comb B may be fastened to the lower blade of the shears, if desirable.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I As a new article of manufacture, a pair of shears, with a comb and means for connecting the comb to the shears, comprisinga bar connected to one blade of the shears, said bar I having a groovealong its edge and formed of spring sides adapted to receive and hold the comb in position, substantially as shown and described.
