stares NELLIE SPEAKER QJJEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLI N OIS.
. p HAIR-CUTTII\TG DEVICE Application filed November 18, 1922. Serial No. 601,228.
To all whom it may concern:
. lie it known that I, NnLLIn SPEAKER GWEN, a citizen oftheUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Devices, of which the following is a speci- 'cation.
The invention relates to an improved de- 1'; vice for use in cutting or trimming hair and particularly i'orcutting, trimming and tinishing the hair at the sides and edgesof the scalp portion ofthe head of a person whose hair is to be out, and-the primary object of the invention is to provide a guiding device for use of the operator to insure that the edges of. the hair covered portions of the scalpo'f the person whose hair is being cut by the use of the device will be cut with the i desired uniormity and without notching or irregularity even though the cutting operation be performed by one not ordinarily skilled in the art of hair cutting.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device for use in hair cutting which shall be simple in construction, economical to make and shall be easy to operate 7 as a guide in the hands of unskillful persons to insure uniformity in what is commonly termed as the trim portion of the hair cutting operation. I
Among those having experience and skill in hair cutting operations, it is recognized that in cutting hair it is desirable to trim or out comparatively short the hair on that portion of the scalp located adjacent the upper lobes of the ears and bounded by describing a curve approximately parallel with the rounded curve of the upper sides of the ears of an individual, this curve being spaced peripherally beyond the upper curved edge of the car at varying distances according to the taste of the operator or the individual being operated on, the width of this closely trimmed portion being ordinarily anywhere from three-fourths of an inch to an inch or more in width and extending downwardly and around the back of the head at the base of the scalp to connect with a similar portionon the opposite side of the head. This trimmed portion will also be extended forwardly. of the ear overv the temple. Also if it is desired to cut the hair closely over other portions of the scalp without notching or other irregularities the device may be used in connection with cutters of any desired character to advantage.
Other objects oi the invention will appear from the following description which is directed to the preferred embodiment oi the invention shown in the accompanying drawings which depict the preferred form of the invention. the novel features thereof being 'depicted in the appended claims.
- Fig.1 shows the manner in which the device is applied as guide in trimming hair. 2 is a side elevation of the improved hair cutting device.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 8*?) oi Fig. 2 looking in the direction of-the arrows.
Fig. 4.- is a modified form of the device as shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 another modification of the device shown in Fig. 3.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the drawing.
The improved hair cutting device is or a comb-like structure and may be made of any suitable material desired, preferably of aluminum in the interest of lightness and comprises a base portion 10, which terminates at one of its ends in handle 11. The back or base portion 10 has a plurality of spaced apart teeth 12. which in outline describe an approximate isosceles triangle hav ing sloping sides 13. These teeth l2 may be made integral with the back or base portion 1.0 or they be made separately and so cured to the back or base portion in any suitable manner and they may also be formed sol idly as clearly shown in Fig. 3, or they may be formed by two diverging members or prongs 14 and 15, as clearly shown in the modified form of the invention of Fig. 4, or the form of the teeth be modified by forming the teeth in substantially the shape of an isosceles triangle having apertures 16 in the broad face thereof. As before stated, the improved device is for the purpose of aiding a person unskilled in the art of hair cutting to cut hair smoothly and uniformly, especiallv on those parts of the head where, what is commonly termed in the barbers art, as trimming is necessary. It is the practice in trimming hair for the barber to pass a comb through the hair, holding the comb spaced from the scalp a distance compatable with the lengthhe wishes to trim the hair. This is an operation which re til quires considerable practicein order to;obtain the skill required for properly manipulatingtheyc'omb to guide that-shears in 0b taining the proper graduation in the length of the hair to presentan even and uniform surface. In the trimming operatlon the hair at the bottom portion to be trimmed should be the shortest, as indicatedbyref erence character 17 ofFig. 11,? andthe hair' thereabove should be gradually increased in length, asindicatedI-by reference character I claim is:
18 of Fig. 1, so as to present-a smooth-and 'ur 'iiorm appearance; In the use olmy' 1nve'ntion this result'is ObllfllIIEd'bY inserting 1 the broad-end o'i'the teeth 12 in thehair as clearly shovvn in Fig.1, when the: sloping edges-otthe teeth will act as a guidefor the shears in" the. operation of trimmir'rgthe hair upwardly from the point 'j ustabove the ears, which will result inthe hair being cut in even and uniform graduated lengths.
Havingthus described my invention What 3. A hair trimming device havinga base,
a plurality of triangular teeth affixed to the base, the teeth being broadest at their ends furthest removed "from the: base.
4. A hair trimming device having'a base, a plurality of teeth afiixed to the base, the
"teeth converging lrom their outer extremities. towardthe base.
A ha 'Vcutting device having a base,
a plurality; of teethprojecting therefrom" having their broadest portion at their outer extremitie and sloping toward the-base.
6, A1 hair cutting device comprising a base having a plurality of spaced apart teeth formed by diverging members.
. '7. A. hair cutting device" comprising a base portion provided withxmeans adapted to be grasped bythe hand-of an operator and a plurality of comb-like teethspaced apart. and heldin said: space d position the-base portionythe lateraledges of the said teeth lying in planes whichdiverge outwardly v 7 from the 7; base portion whereby to forrna guide for suitable hair cutting means to permit hair projecting through; they 7 teeth to-be cut shortestadjacent the base and V progressively longer from the base toward the outermost extremities of the saidteeth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification on this 143th day of November, A; D. 1922. a V
